TL;DR: A significant positive correlation between portal vein and peripheral vein IRI responses to glucose was noted and the absolute amount of “big” insulin in the portal vein was similar during the first phase and the early part of the second phase of insulin secretion.
Abstract: Catheterization of the portal vein via the umbilical vein was performed under local anesthesia in twelve nondiabetic subjects prior to exploratory laporatomy for a variety of conditions. Immunoreactive insulin (IRI) in simultaneously obtained portal and peripheral vein plasma was determined before, during, and after a two-minute glucose infusion (25 gm.). Two phases of insulin secretion were apparent from portal vein IRI concentrations. A rapid secretory phase beginning one minute after start of the infusion and lasting three to four minutes was followed by a slower secretory phase beginning approximately ten minutes after start of the glucose infusion. The absolute amount of “big” insulin (proinsulin-like material) in the portal vein was similar during the first phase and the early part of the second phase of insulin secretion. A significant positive correlation between portal vein and peripheral vein IRI responses to glucose was noted.

TL;DR: An increase in the specificity of enzyme systems for the determination of pesticides is possible due to the effect of fifteen different pesticides including carbamates, chlorinated hydrocarbons and organophosphurus compounds on cholinesterase.
Abstract: The effect of fifteen different pesticides including carbamates, chlorinated hydrocarbons and organophosphurus compounds on cholinesterase from housefly, sugar boll weevll, fire ant and German cockroaches is reported. Since the cholinesterase from each source show different inhibition by various inhibitors, an increase in the specificity of enzyme systems for the determination of pesticides is possible.

TL;DR: Osseous surgery correcting bone de formities can be classified as osteoectomy or osteo plasty, where the bone immediately adjacent to the periodontal liga ment is removed and an osteoplasty is performed if any of the remaining bone other than bone immediately adja cent to the tooth is removed.
Abstract: OSSEOUS SURGERY PROCEDURES are being performed on the vestibular bone over the tooth root by the profession for correction of alveolar bone deformities resulting from periodontal disease. Various mucoperiosteal flap operations are often used in conjunction with osseous surgery to gain access and visibility to the alveolar bone during the surgery. Osseous surgery correcting bone de formities can be classified as osteoectomy or osteo plasty. An osteoectomy in periodontal surgery indicates the bone immediately adjacent to the periodontal liga ment is removed; an osteoplasty is performed if any of the remaining bone other than bone immediately adja cent to the tooth is removed. The two types may be utilized separately or together.

TL;DR: In this article, a new approach based on a gravitational potential energy derived from Gupta's quantum theory of gravitation was proposed to carry out the calculations using only the familiar tools of Newtonian mechanics and the Euler-Lagrange equations.
Abstract: Previous work on the gravitational two-body problem is surveyed Next, we present a new approach, which we consider to be simpler and more transparent than the usual methods because it is based on a gravitational potential energy This enables us to carry out our calculations using only the familiar tools of Newtonian mechanics and the Euler-Lagrange equations Starting from a gravitational potential energy derived from Gupta's quantum theory of gravitation, the classical motion of a spherical gyroscope in the gravitational field of a much larger mass with a quadrupole moment is found The results of the precession of the spin are compared with those of Schiff, and a detailed derivation of the results of O'Connell for the effect of a quadrupole moment (and higher moments) on the precession of the spin is presented In addition, we present some new results First, we show that the quadrupole moment manifests its presence in another way, which also contributes to the precession of the gyroscope a term that is about ten times larger than what could be detected Second, with regard to the precession of the orbit, in addition to the usual contributions, our results include the effects of the spin of both particles (which enables us to calculate the effect of the rotation of Mercury on the precession of its perihelion)

TL;DR: This article showed that barrier island formation from engulfed beach and dune ridges during the early stages of transgression is not confirmed by historical evidence and drilling results from published sources and U.S. Coast Survey charts.
Abstract: Historical evidence and drilling results from published sources and U.S. Coast Survey charts 1 indicate that barrier islands form by upward aggradation of submerged shoal areas. Subsequent extensive barrier island migration may completely obscure conditions of formation of the original barrier island. Migration may take place parallel, perpendicular, or at oblique angles to the mainland shoreline and appears to take place much faster when parallel with the shoreline. No evidence indicates barrier island formation from engulfed beach and dune ridges during the early stages of transgression. Many strand plain and chenier ridges form the same wav as barrier ridges.

TL;DR: There may be competitive neural systems involved with motion sickness, one activated by acetylcholine and one most likely mediated by norepinephrine, and both of these mechanisms was the most effective preparation for preventing motion sickness.
Abstract: A series of anti‐motion sickness drug evaluation experiments has been performed at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola. Carefully controlled laboratory conditions using the slow‐rotation room were maintained. The results were confirmed by similar experiments in the air and at sea. The effective drugs fell into two categories, those that blocked acetylcholine in the central nervous system and those which activated the central sympathetic areas. A combination of drugs involving both of these mechanisms was the most effective preparation for preventing motion sickness. These results have indicated that there may be competitive neural systems involved with motion sickness, one activated by acetylcholine and one most likely mediated by norepinephrine. Motion sickness would occur when activation of the acetylcholine system disturbed this balance, and protection of the motion sickness drugs would be achieved by preventing it.

TL;DR: Almost all patients showed improvement on a regimen of cleanliness and external support, and the addition of supplemental oral zinc to the therapeutic regime did not acclerate the healing rate in any patient.
Abstract: Summary An objective method of determining the healing rate in patients with chronic leg ulcers has been used in forty patients to date. Almost all patients showed improvement on a regimen of cleanliness and external support. The serum zinc levels of twenty-four of the patients ranged from 39 to 219 μg per cent, but there was no correlation between the healing rate and the serum level. The addition of supplemental oral zinc to the therapeutic regime did not acclerate the healing rate in any patient.

Abstract: Three consecutive early summer studies on the upper Texas coast have produced data that afford a much clearer view of the land and sea breeze system than was previously held. Networks of surface observations, pibal and radiosonde ascents, and aircraft flights have produced observations that are integrated to give a synthesized model of the coastal air-circulation system as a function of space and time.

TL;DR: Carolina bays are exceptionally well developed in Horry and Marion counties, South Carolina as discussed by the authors, and three bay types have been recognized: flat interfluve, dune depression, and terrace contact.
Abstract: Carolina bays are exceptionally well developed in Horry and Marion counties, South Carolina. Depositional surfaces of coastal and fluvial origin have been mapped in this area, and the stratigraphy is reasonably well known above the Pee Dee Formation (Cretaceous). Bays occur on 7 sand-rich surfaces, all pre-Recent in age. Three bay types have been recognized: flat interfluve, dune depression, and terrace contact. The majority of bays in the study area belong to the first type. These bays are underlain by sand cemented with humate which forms an impermeable layer close to the surface. This perches the water table, thereby allowing development of shallow, wet depressions in sandy terrain. The size ot depressions appears to be partly controlled by the width of the interfluve and degree of relief created by dissection of the depositional surface. The two other bay types are located in favorable topographic depressions initiated by dune deflation or damming by fluvial deposition. Drilling in and around bays shows no evidence of solution and subsidence in spite of the presence of carbonate-rich strata in the subsurface and some very localized sinkholes of irregular shape and considerable depth (+20ft). It is postulated that Carolina bays in this area developed from shallow lakes (1 to 6 ft deep) during the mid- to late-Wisconsin in a period when vegetation cover and drainage systems were undergoing considerable change. However, there are many unanswered problems of bay development, including the degree to which they are analogous to contemporary oriented lakes (for example, in Alaska). Stabilized parabolic dunes in river valleys indicate that SW. and WSW. winds blew across bays during their formative period. A similar hydrodynamic system to that recognized in Alaska may have existed in the shallow water bodies of ancestral bays, and led to development of elongated shapes and sand rims.

TL;DR: Analysis of plasma FFA supports the contention that the unmasking of a stimulatory effect of epinephrine on plasma HGH by propranolol was due to unopposed alpha receptor activity rather than suppression of epinphrine-induced FFA elevations.
Abstract: The effect of infusions of epinephrine and propranolol singly and in combination on plasma growth hormone concentrations was determined in seven subjects. Epinephrine alone had no effect on plasma HGH concentrations. Propranolol which caused a rise in plasma HGH in only one subject when administered alone unmasked a stimulatory effect of epinephrine on plasma HGH concentrations when the two agents were given together. Analysis of plasma FFA supports the contention that the unmasking of a stimulatory effect of epinephrine on plasma HGH by propranolol was due to unopposed alpha receptor activity rather than suppression of epinephrine-induced FFA elevations. This investigation suggests that peripherally released or administered catecholamines may effect growth hormone secretory centers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the energy bands of hexagonal NiAs were calculated using lattice constants and crystal potential appropriate to the metallic phase, and the energy band structure was characterized by a 3d band about 3 eV wide, hybridized with a broad $s\ensuremath{-}p$ band, indicating $s \ensure-math{)-d$-type conductivity.
Abstract: Energy bands are calculated for hexagonal NiS using lattice constants and crystal potential appropriate to the metallic phase. Group theoretic results for $s$, $p$, and $d$ bands in the NiAs structure are obtained, and the calculation is performed using a first-principles tight-binding method. The energy band structure is characterized by a $3d$ band about 3 eV wide, hybridized with a broad $s\ensuremath{-}p$ band, indicating $s\ensuremath{-}d$-type conductivity. The Fermi energy lies just below the top of the $d$ bands and the density of states exhibits a strong sharp peak about 1 eV below the Fermi energy. Since the energy bands suggest considerable structure in the low-energy region of the reflectivity, selection rules, polarizations, and energies for some of the spectra are presented. The band structure is discussed in terms of the metal-to-semiconductor transition which has been observed for hexagonal NiS.

TL;DR: GH synthesis was high for 7 weeks after birth, during which time the body weight increased rapidly; thereafter the rate decreased with age, and there was no change in GH synthesis in female rats with age.
Abstract: GH and prolactin of rat anterior pituitary were fractionated by polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis. In vitro incorporation of 14C-leucine into these hormone fractions was measured in male and female rats at ages ranging from 14 to 120 days. Their rates of synthesis and release were found to change markedly during growth, and to be different between sexes. Generally, synthesis and release of GH were greater in males, whereas synthesis and release of prolactin were greater in females. The rates of synthesis and release of GH increased more rapidly in males, and those of prolactin more rapidly in females after 30 days of age. In male rats, GH synthesis was high for 7 weeks after birth, during which time the body weight increased rapidly; thereafter the rate decreased with age. There was no change in GH synthesis in female rats with age. Prolactin synthesis increased with age in both sexes, at a greater rate in females than in males.

Abstract: The findings in the case of a man with solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the skin and a review of the world literature are presented. This is the seventh reported case of solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the skin. In our case, the tumor mass was surgically excised and a recurrence was treated with hemipelvectomy and radiation therapy. At necropsy, the tumor mass had extended into the peritoneal cavity with metastasis to the liver, pancreas, and thyroid, but there was no bone marrow involvement. The differentiation of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the skin from multiple myeloma is discussed as is therapy for this disease.

TL;DR: Two commonly held explanations for mosaics induced by treating postmeiotic spermatozoa with chemical mutagens are incosistent with an analysis of the percent of mutant tissue produced in the F 1, and both of the initial models were rejected.
Abstract: This study shows that 2 commonly held explanations for mosaics induced by treating postmeiotic spermatozoa with chemical mutagens are incosistent with an analysis of the percent of mutant tissue produced in the F 1 . The first model tested assumes that mosaics are the results of altering one strand of the DNA double helix so that there will be an equal number of mutant and nonmutant nuclei following semiconservative replication. The second model assumes that alkylation of a base in DNA will cause a fixed probability of base pairing mistakes and may produced a mutation at any replication. In phage the probability of mispairing following alkylation is low so that a mutation likely occurs only once in 8 replications; therefore, most of the mutations are fixed after the first 2 divisions. If Drosophila is similar to phage, the mean frequency of mutant nuclei and the frequency distribution of mosaics by class of percent mutant tissue will be distinctly different for the 2 models. Males were fed ethyl methanesulfonate and mutations were detected in the F 1 by the specific locus method at the yellow ( y ) and white w loci. Agreement between this experiment and previous work with mosaics produced by chromosome aberrations was found in that the germ line developed from a small sample of poorly mixed nuclei that was independent of the phenotype of head and thorax. The latter finding allowed a selection of mosaics to be made independent of the germ line, and a method of analysis was developed for flies selected because they were mosaic in the head or thorax. Analyses of results from the eye mosaics in this experiment and from 3 experiments with the dumpy (dp) locus previously reported by others but not analyzed in this was were inconsistent with both original models. The average percent of mutant phenotype among the yellow mosaic observed in this experiment was also found inconsistent with both original models, and a frequency distribution of mosaics classified by percent of mutant tissue was inconsistent with both original models and a combination of the two; therefore, both of our initial models and a combination of the two were rejected. The data are consistent with delayed mutation in which an alkylated base has about a 50% probability of mispairing at each replication and producing a fixed mutation or with a multistranded model in which the postmeiotic eukaryote chromosome contains 2 parallel DNA molecules for each locus.
