Abstract: RADAR studies of bird migration have been restricted to latitudes north of 32? N. These studies have contributed greatly to our knowledge of migration, but have examined only a portion of the long-distance migrations made by many bird species. No radar studies of migration have been published for regions nearer the equator where environmental conditions are more constant. This paper reports on a radar and telescopic study of spring migration on the Louisiana coast of the Gulf of Mexico between 29? and 310 N, one of the first landfalls that migrants reach after leaving the tropics and crossing the Gulf (Figure 1).

Abstract: A 2 year study of the relationship between climatologic variables, semiquantitative rotoslide pollen and fungal spore aerometric sampling data, and emergency room asthma admission rates at New Orleans Charity Hospital was made. An interrelationship between certain climatologic factors, high airborne spore and pollen concentrations, and asthma admission rates was noted. Large asthma "epidemics" (above 40 asthma admissions per 24 hours) occurred almost exclusively from June through December and in greater magnitude during September, October, and November. High summer asthma admission rates were significantly associated with high "total spore and pollen," "basidiospore-like," and "small spore" rotoslide counts. Asthma "epidemics" occurring during the peak September and October local Ambrosia pollination season were not necessarily associated with sudden influxes of Ambrosia pollen, but there was a significant relationship between high daily asthma admission rates (above 20 daily asthma admissions) and 24 hour rotoslide Ambrosia counts during September and early October. Asthma "epidemics" of considerable magnitude occurred in late October and November immediately following the peak Ambrosia pollination season. High total and "basidiospore-like" rotoslide spore concentrations plus heavy deposits of amorphous chitinous material resembling plant debris were noted on slide samples during these episodes. We currently postulate that New Orleans epidemic asthma does not involve a point source chemical or particulate pollutant but rather results from sensitization of the local atopic population by diverse natural inhalant allergens acting in seasonal patterns.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the stress analysis by the finite element method of a bonded, single, lap joint. Since the adhesive layer is of primary importance, the stresses occurring in it are presented. Stratification as used in this paper does not imply the presence of discrete layers of vegetation, each containing its own distinct and unique fauna. Stratification refers here to the distribution of bird species in relation to the vertical distribution of the foliage. Among the terrestrial animals in which stratification has been investigated are the leaf hoppers (Adams 1941), mosquitoes (Bates 1944; Snow 1955; Haddow et al. 1964), ants (Wilson 1959), spiders (Gibson 1947), various arthropods (Fichter 1939), and mammals (Harrison 1962; Napier 1966). Because of their extreme vertical mobility, birds are especially sensitive to vertical stratification of vegetation and, because of their size and activity, lend themselves well to observation. Studies of bird stratification have been conducted in relation to morphological adaptations (Dilger 1956), social patterns (Moynihan 1962), nest site (Tur6ek 1951), territory maintenance (Kendeigh 1947), predator avoidance (Dunlavy 1935), and food (Colquhoun and Morley 1943; Hartley 1953; Slud 1960; Pielowski 1961; Harrison 1962). Recent studies of species diversity (MacArthur et al. 1962; MacArthur 1964; MacArthur et al. 1966; Recher 1969) have also been concerned with vertical stratification of birds.

Abstract: By way of replicating previous work, wild-born chimpanzees given prolonged exposure to mirrors learned to recognize their own reflections. Chimpanzees born in captivity and reared in social isolation did not, however, show behaviors suggestive of self-recognition. The results have possible implications for a theory which proposes that self-concepts arise out of interpersonal relationships.

Abstract: Gonadal growth was controlled in two avian species by corticosterone and prolactin injected daily at various times. Testicular growth was induced in photorefractory house sparrows (Passer domesticus) kept in continuous light by prolactin injected 4 or 8 hours after administration of corticosterone. Other temporal patterns were ineffective. Gonadal growth was also stimulated in photosensitive white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) kept in continuous light by prolactin injected 12 hours after administration of corticosterone. Daily injections of prolactin 8 hours after injection of corticosterone inhibited gonadal growth. The seasonal cycle of reproductive photorefractoriness and photosensitivity is controlled by a changing relation between the daily rhythms of plasma concentrations of corticosterone and prolactin.

Abstract: The sugarcane borerDiatrea saccharalis (F.) is the most serious and destructive insect attacking sugarcane in Louisiana. Losses in sugar yields ascribed to damage by this pest were estimated to have averaged 13% anally from 1937 to 1957. Biological and cultural control measures have been of little benefit against economically damaging infestations ofD. saccharalis and insecticides have historically assumed a major role in control programs. The maximum number of insecticide applications recommended to growers for full-season control ofD. saccharalis on sugarcane has been reduced from 12 to 3 within the past decade. Management practices most responsible for reductions in applications are: 1) discontinuance of insecticidal control of the first generation, 2) improvement of field survey methods for detecting potentially damaging infestations, 3) utilization of an economic injury threshold to ascertain need for insecticide treatment, 4) replacement of ryania and cryolite in control programs with synthetic organic insecticides that provide more effective and longer periods of control, and and 5) more emphasis on host plant resistance to reduce insecticide use.

Abstract: A study has been made of the polarized-orbital method (POM) for electron-atom scattering. Within this framework, an exact calculation has been carried out for the electron-helium-atom case. Our study confirms the importance of the second-order distortion-exchange terms, which provide a nonadiabatic effect. A study is made of the much-criticized step function, and its inclusion within the POM framework is found to be not crucial. An attempt is made to clear up some of the present confusion in the literature by distinguishing between the POM and related methods.

Abstract: The algebraic close-coupling method is applied to slow collisions of electrons and positrons with atomic hydrogen. The wave function is assumed to be of the form appropriate for a $1s\ensuremath{-}2s\ensuremath{-}2p$ close-coupling calculation. The variational method proposed by Nesbet is used to calculate the appropriate phase shifts and cross sections. Excellent agreement with previously published results of Burke, Schey, Smith, and others is obtained for scattering below the $n=2$ threshold. Information concerning resonance structure for positrons, and for electrons in the singlet and triplet state, is also obtained. Good results are also obtained above threshold in the $1s\ensuremath{-}2s$ and three-state approximations. Problems connected with the choice of asymptotic functions for the open $n=2$ channels are discussed.

Abstract: SummaryDaily variations in fattening responses to prolactin may be phased or driven by injections of adrenal steroids in a fish, Fundulus grandis, a lizard, Anolis carolinensis, and a pigeon, Columba livia. Daily injections of prolactin about 24 hr after injections of adrenocortical hormones favor the accumulation of fat stores; whereas daily injections of prolactin 6 hr after the adrenal steroids cause losses in fat. An experiment on the fish indicated that the rhythm of fat responsiveness to prolactin is capable of self-sustaining circadian oscillations on continuous light following initial synchronization by exogenous hydrocortisone. An experiment on the pigeon indicated that a daily rhythm of cropsac sensitivity to prolactin may also be driven by daily injections of corticosterone, but the temporal pattern of the adrenal steroid and prolactin that favors cropsac proliferation is not in the same phase relations with those that favor accumulation of body fat, liver fat, and increases in intestinal weigh...

Abstract: A total of 349 adult red drum (Sciaenops ocellata) were collected from the coastal marsh below Hopedale in southeastern Louisiana, between October, 1967 and October, 1968. A total of 286 fish (82%) contained identifiable food items which were analyzed as to frequency of occurrence and percent of total volume. The main food items in order of occurrence were fish, shrimp, and crabs. Blue crabs, mud crabs, and penaeid shrimp were the crustaceans most frequently eaten, and at least 14 different species of fish were utilized to some degree. Food habits varied substantially from season to season. Fish was the main food item during winter and spring months. Crustaceans, crabs and shrimp combined comprised the bulk of the diet during the summer and fall months. Only slight differences in food habits were detected due to size or sex. Abstract: Anisopteromatus calandrae (Howard) and Choetospila eleegans Westwood were found to be natural parasites of the immature stages of the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamaize Motschulsky, in weevil-infested corn at several locations in Louisiana. A. calandrae was found more frequently than C. elegans . In a period of 4 months, under laboratory conditions, the numbers of adult weevils produced when A. calandrae ami C. elegane were present were ca. 5 and 11 %, respectively, of the number produced in the absence of parasites. Under laboratory and outdoor environmental conditions, the mean weevil progeny in the A. calandrae treatment was less than ½ that produced in the control under both environmental conditions. C. elegans was less effective under both conditions but appeared to reduce weevil populations by ½ and ¼ under outdoor and under laboratory conditions, respectively. Reproduction by C. elegans was found to he arrhenotokous.
