Abstract: Background and Methods Maternal-infant transmission is the primary means by which young children become infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV). We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy and safety of zidovudine in reducing the risk of maternal-infant HIV transmission. HIV-infected pregnant women (14 to 34 weeks' gestation) with CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts above 200 cells per cubic millimeter who had not received antiretroviral therapy during the current pregnancy were enrolled. The zidovudine regimen included antepartum zidovudine (100 mg orally five times daily), intrapartum zidovudine (2 mg per kilogram of body weight given intravenously over a one-hour period, then 1 mg per kilogram per hour until delivery), and zidovudine for the newborn (2 mg per kilogram orally every six hours for six weeks). Abstract: The ideal material for reconstruction of a breast is fat and skin. Most current methods of autogenous reconstruction use myocutaneous flaps. We investigated the feasibility of transfer of skin and fat from the lower abdomen without muscle sacrifice. The flap is based on one, two, or three perforators of the deep inferior epigastric vessels. The study will demonstrate both experimentally and clinically this original technique for breast reconstruction. Fifteen breasts have been successfully reconstructed with this technique. This technique has all of the advantages of the free transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap with decreased possibility of ventral hernia or muscle weakness.

Abstract: CHANGES in delivery of river-borne nutrients such as dissolved phosphate, nitrate and silicate, owing to land-use changes and anthropogenic emissions, are known to result in eutrophication1— enhanced phytoplankton blooms—and more severe hypoxic events2–1 in many enclosed bays and seas. Although similar ecological effects might be expected on continental shelves, the occurrence of such eutrophication has remained unresolved5. Here we present evidence of eutrophication of the continental shelf near the outflow of the Mississippi river, obtained by quantifying biologically bound silica (BSi) in diatom remnants within dated sediment cores. BSi accumulation rates are greatest in water depths of 20 to 50 m within 100 km of the river mouth, and have increased by as much as 100% this century. The increases were substantial by 1980, by which time riverine nitrogen loading had doubled relative to the beginning of the century, even though the silica loading had declined by 50% over the same period. Thus changes in river-borne nutrient loadings can modify coastal food webs and affect the amount and distribution of oxygen in bottom waters on the scale of continental shelves.

Abstract: The mechanism(s) importing salt tolerance to plants remains unresolved. Although cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is classified as salt-tolerant plant, variation in salt tolerance has been observed among different cultivars. The purpose of this study was to determine if more salt-tolerant cultivars contain higher constitutive or inducible levels of antioxidants than more salt-sensitive cultivars. Greenhouse-grown salt-tolerant (cv. Acaia 1517-88 and Acala 1517-SR2) and salt-sensitive (cv. Deltapine 50 and Stoneville 825) cotton plants treated with either 0 or 150 mM NaCl were analyzed for differences in growth and antioxidant capocities. The 150 mM NaCl treatment resulted in more than 40% reduction in growth of Deltapine 50 and Stoneville 825 and less than 30% reduction in the Acala cultivars. The more salt-tolerant cultivars had higher constitutive levels of catalase (121-215%) and u-tocopherol (312-420%). The salt treatment resulted in a 38 to 72% increase in peroxidase activity and a 55 to 101% increase in glutathione reductase activity in the Acala cultivars while the activities of these enzymes remained constant or decreased in the more sensitive cultivars. The Acala cultivars also exhibited a lower oxidized/reduced ascorbic acid ratio and a higher reduced/oxidized glutathione ratio than the more sensitive cultivars when grown at 150 mM NaCl. When subjected to a one-time salt treatment, lipid peroxidation in Deltapine 50 increased 51% over Acala 1517-88. These data indicate that protection from oxidative damage by higher levels of antioxidants and a more active ascorbate-glutathione cycle may be involved in tbe development of salt tolerance in cotton. Abstract: Procedural and distributive justice were examined in an employee selection situation. Along procedural justice dimensions, job relatedness of and explanation offered for the selection procedures were manipulated. Distributive justice was examined through manipulation of a selection decision and collection of a priori hiring expectations. Dependent measures included fairness reactions, recommendation intentions, self-efficacy, and actual work performance. Undergraduates (n = 260) were selected/rejected for paid employment. Job relatedness influenced performance and interacted with selection decision on perceptions of distributive fairness and self-efficacy. Explanations influenced recommendations of rejected applicants. Interactions between hiring expectations and selection decision were observed on perceived fairness and recommendation intentions.

Abstract: DNA sequences for the gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I in a group of rodents (pocket gophers) and their ectoparasites (chewing lice) provide evidence for cospeciation and reveal different rates of molecular evolution in the hosts and their parasites. The overall rate of nucleotide substitution (both silent and replacement changes) is approximately three times higher in lice, and the rate of synonymous substitution (based on analysis of fourfold degenerate sites) is approximately an order of magnitude greater in lice. The difference in synonymous substitution rate between lice and gophers correlates with a difference of similar magnitude in generation times.

Abstract: The mobility and plant availability of many trace and toxic metals in wetland soils is often substantially different from upland soils. Oxidation-reduction (redox) and associated pH changes that occur in soils as a result of flooding or drainage can affect the retention and release of metals by clay minerals, organic matter, iron oxides, and, for coastal wetlands, sulfides. Except where a flooded soil or sediment becomes strongly acid upon drainage and oxidation, as sometimes occurs, the processes immobilizing metals tend to be complimentary such that large-scale metal releases from contaminated soils and sediments do not occur with changing redox conditions. Metals tend to be retained more strongly in wetland soils compared with upland soils. 50 refs., 4 tabs.

Abstract: Studies of pre-Depression banking argue that banking panics resulted from depositor confusion about the incidence of shocks, and that interbank cooperation avoided unwarranted failures. This paper uses individual bank data to address the question of whether solvent Chicago banks failed during the panic asthe result of confusion by depositors. Chicago banks are divided" into three groups: panic failures, failures outside the panic window, and survivors. The characteristics of these three groups are compared to determine whether the banks that failed during the panic were similar ex ante" to those that survived the panic or whether they shared characteristics with other banks that failed. Each category of comparison -- the market-to-book value of equity, the estimated probability or failure or duration of survival the composition of debt, the rates of withdrawal of debt during 1931, and the interest rates paid on debt -- leads to the same conclusion: banks that failed during the panic were similar to others that failed and different from survivors. The special attributes of failing banks were distinguishable at least six months before the panic and were reflected in stock prices, failure probabilities, debt composition, and interest rates at least that far in advance. We conclude that failures during the panic reflected relative weakness in the face of common asset value shock rather than contagion. Other evidence points to cooperation among solvent Chicago banks a key factor in avoiding unwarranted bank failures during the panic.

Abstract: On the basis of 30 samples from near-simultaneous overwater measurements by pairs of anemometers located at different heights in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, the mean and standard deviation for the exponent of the power-law wind profile over the ocean under near-neutral atmospheric stability conditions were determined to be 0.11 ± 0.03. Because this mean value is obtained from both deep and shallow water environments, it is recommended for use at sea to adjust the wind speed measurements at different heights to the standard height of 10 m above the mean sea surface. An example to apply this P value to estimate the momentum flux or wind stress is provided.

Abstract: Study design A pain referral map generated from Part I of this study was tested in 54 consecutive patients. Pain diagrams, completed by each patient, were compared to the map generated from sacroiliac injections in 10 volunteers (Part I). Two clinicians, blinded to the examination of each individual, selected the diagrams most consistent with the pain map. Objectives To determine the applicability of a pain referral map as a screening tool for sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Summary of background data Two independent examiners, blinded to the patients' examinations, selected 16 individuals whose pain diagrams most represented the map generated in Part I. There was a 100% concordance of patients selected. All 16 patients selected had a provocation-positive SI joint injection. Ten of these individuals also received lumbar discography and lumbar facet injections. Only the SI injection on the symptomatic side was provocation positive. Methods Patients selected for evaluation based on pain mapping received sacroiliac joint injection. Provocation-positive injections were used to confirm the diagnosis of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Ten subjects subsequently underwent lumbar discography and lumbar facet joint injections to further confirm the diagnosis. Results Few studies involving low back pain have used pain referral maps. In the present study, patients were successfully screened for sacroiliac joint dysfunction using a pain referral map generated from provocation of asymptomatic volunteers. Conclusion Patients can be successfully screened for sacroiliac joint dysfunction based on comparison with a pain referral map. Further study on the false negative rates of sacroiliac pain maps is needed.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to describe the criteria mentioned by users evaluating the information within documents as it related to the users' information need situations. Data were collected by asking users in an academic environment to evaluate representations and the full text of documents that had been retrieved specifically for each user's information need situation. Users were asked to mark the portions of the document representations or of the full text of documents that indicated to the users whether they would or would not pursue the information within documents. An open-ended interview technique was then employed to discuss each marked portion with users. The interviews were audiotaped, the tapes transcribed, and the transcriptions were content analyzed in order to identify and describe evaluation criteria. The results indicate that the criteria employed by users included tangible characteristics of documents (e.g., the information content of the document, the provision of references to other sources of information), subjective qualities (e.g., agreement with the information provided by the document) and situational factors (e.g., the time constraints under which the user was working). The implications of this research for our understanding of the concept of relevance, and for the design and evaluation of information retrieval systems, are discussed. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: The number of all possible linear and branched isomers of a hexasaccharide was calculated and found to be > 1.05 x 10(12). This large number defines the Isomer Barrier, a persistent technological barrier to the development of a single analytical method for the absolute characterization of carbohydrates, regardless of sample quantity. Because of this isomer barrier, no single method can be employed to determine complete oligosaccharide structure in 100 nmol amounts with the same assurance that can be achieved for 100 pmol amounts with single-procedure Edman peptide or Sanger DNA sequencing methods. Difficulties in the development of facile synthetic schemes for oligosaccharides are also explained by this large number. No current method of chemical or physical analysis has the resolution necessary to distinguish among 10(12) structures having the same mass. Therefore the 'characterization' of a middle-weight oligosaccharide solely by NMR or mass spectrometry necessarily contains a very large margin of error. Greater uncertainty accompanies results performed solely by sequential enzyme degradation followed by gel-permeation chromatography or electrophoresis, as touted by some commercial advertisements. Much of the literature which uses these single methods to 'characterize' complex carbohydrates is, therefore, in question, and journals should beware of publishing structural characterizations unless the authors reveal all alternate possible structures which could result from their analysis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: The adherence and emigration of leukocytes have been implicated as a rate-limiting step in the microvascular dysfunction associated with reperfusion of ischemic tissues. The objective of the present study was to define the relation between leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion and albumin leakage in rat mesenteric venules exposed to ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Leukocyte adherence and emigration as well as albumin extravasation were monitored in single post-capillary venules using intravital fluorescence microscopy. Ischemia (0, 10, 15, or 20 minutes) was induced by complete occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery, and all parameters were monitored for 30 minutes after reperfusion. The magnitude of the leukocyte adherence and emigration and albumin leakage elicited by I/R was positively correlated with the duration of ischemia. The albumin leakage response was also highly correlated with the number of adherent and emigrated leukocytes. Monoclonal antibodies against the adhesion glycoproteins CD18, CD11b, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) (at 10 and 30 minutes), and L-selectin (at 10 minutes), but not P- or E-selectin, reduced I/R-induced leukocyte adherence and emigration as well as albumin leakage. Platelet-leukocyte aggregates were formed in postischemic venules; the number of aggregates was reduced by antibodies against P-selectin, CD11b, CD18, and ICAM-1, but not E- or L-selectin. These results indicate that reperfusion-induced albumin leakage is tightly coupled to the adherence and emigration of leukocytes in postcapillary venules. This adhesion-dependent injury response is primarily mediated by CD11b/CD18 on activated neutrophils and ICAM-1 on venular endothelium and appears to require L-selectin-dependent leukocyte rolling.

Abstract: Hydrocarbon-derived and microbially mediated authigenic carbonates occur over the entire depth range of the northern Gulf of Mexico slope. These carbonates consist of nodules and incipient nodules in surface sediments, hardgrounds and isolated slabs, and moundlike buildups of up to 10–20 m relief above the surrounding seafloor. The authigenic carbonates are characterized byδ13C negative values in the range −18‰ to −55‰ (PDB) suggesting mixing of seawater carbon with13C-depleted carbon sources ranging from crude oil to biogenic methane. Near the shelf edge, carbonates are “diluted” with biogenic material produced by reefs—bioherms developed at low sea level stands. Fossil-poor carbonates over salt diapirs of the upper and middle slope formed in the shallow subsurface and have been exhumed by the combined processes of uplift and physical erosion. Middle and lower slope carbonates are generally rich in fossil shells of chemosynthetic organisms. Mg calcite pelloidal matrix and acicular to botryoidal aragonitic void-filling cements are common petrographic features of these hydrocarbonderived carbonates. At two sites carbonates are mixed with barite.

Abstract: Flume nets of various lengths and a 3-m seine were used to sample the fishes and macrocrustaceans using a flooded Louisiana salt marsh and the adjacent tidal creek. The experiment allowed for species-specific comparisons of the flooded marsh at the creek edge versus the interior. Of the 37,667 organisms collected in flume nets from January through November 1989, 89% were decapods (nine species) and 11% were fish (29 species). An additional 18,539 organisms (75% decapods and 25% fish) were collected from concurrent seine samples taken from July through November. Comparison of catches among different flume lengths and low tide versus high tide seine collections revealed distinct patterns of marsh habitat utilization. Densities of most organisms were highest within 3 m of the water’s edge, but significant numbers of marsh-resident fish species used the interior marshes. The edge marshes appeared to be used by both transient and resident species; however, the interior marshes were used primarily by marsh-resident species (Cyprinodontiformes andPalaemonetes sp.) that are excellent food sources for adult transient-species. Four zonations of marsh use are described for transients, residents, and rare species.

Abstract: Peroxynitrite is stable, but its acid, HOONO, either rearranges to form nitrate or oxidizes nearby biomolecules. We report here the reactions of HOONO with methionine and the methionine analog 2-keto-4-thiomethylbutanoic acid (KTBA). These oxidations proceed by two competing mechanisms. The first yields the sulfoxide; the second-order rate constants, k2, for this process for methionine and KTBA are 181 +/- 8 and 277 +/- 11 M-1.s-1, respectively, at pH 7.4 and 25 degrees C. In the second mechanism, methionine or KTBA undergoes a one-electron oxidation that ultimately gives ethylene. We propose that the one-electron oxidant is an activated form of peroxynitrous acid, HOONO*, that is formed in a steady state mechanism. The ratios of the second-order rate constants for the ethylene-producing reaction (k*2) and the first-order rate constant to produce nitric acid (kN) for methionine and KTBA, k*2/kN, are 1250 +/- 290 and 6230 +/- 1390 M-1, respectively. Both ceric and peroxydisulfate ions also oxidize KTBA to ethylene, confirming a one-electron transfer mechanism. The yields of neither MetSO nor ethylene are affected by several hydroxyl radical scavengers, suggesting that a unimolecular homolysis of HOONO to HO. and .NO2 is not involved in these reactions. HOONO* gives hydroxyl radical-like products from various substrates but displays more selectivity than does the hydroxyl radical; thus, HOONO* is incompletely trapped by typical HO. scavengers. However, a mechanism involving dissociation of HOONO* to caged radicals cannot be ruled out at this time.

Abstract: Eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF-4E plays a central role in the recognition of the 7-methylguanosine-containing cap structure of mRNA and the formation of initiation complexes during protein synthesis. eIF-4E exists in both phosphorylated and nonphosphorylated forms, and the primary site of phosphorylation has been identified. Previous studies have suggested that eIF-4E phosphorylation facilitates its participation in protein synthesis. However, the biochemical basis for the functional difference between the two forms of eIF-4E is unknown. To address this directly, we have developed a method for the separation of phosphorylated and nonphosphorylated eIF-4E from rabbit reticulocytes by chromatography on rRNA-Sepharose. Using the resultant purified forms, we have studied the protein's interaction with the cap analogs m7GTP and m7GpppG and with the cap of globin mRNA by fluorescence quenching of tryptophan residues. It was found that phosphorylated eIF-4E had 3- to 4-fold greater affinity for cap analogs and mRNA than nonphosphorylated eIF-4E. The equilibrium binding constants (x 10(5), expressed as M-1) for the interaction of phosphorylated eIF-4E with m7GTP, m7GpppG, and globin mRNA were 20.0 +/- 0.1, 16.4 +/- 0.1, and 31.0 +/- 0.1, respectively, whereas those for the nonphosphorylated form were 5.5 +/- 0.4, 4.3 +/- 0.4, and 10.0 +/- 0.1, respectively. Treatment with potato acid phosphatase converted the phosphorylated form to the nonphosphorylated form and decreased the binding constant for m7GTP by a factor of 3. The increased affinity for mRNA caps may account for the in vivo and in vitro correlations between eIF-4E phosphorylation and accelerated protein synthesis and cell growth.

Abstract: The experiments described below were designed to investigate whether contingent versus non-contingent electric footshock would affect the acquisition of intravenous cocaine self-administration in rats. During the first component of a multiple schedule, triads of rats were trained to respond under a discrete-trial, fixed-ratio 10 schedule of food reinforcement. Random footshock presentation (0.6 mA) for the first and second rats from each triad was yoked to food lever responding by the rats in the first group only, while the third group of rats was never shocked. When stable baselines of food-reinforced responding were obtained, all three rats from each triad were allowed to self-administer increasing doses of cocaine (0.031–0.5 mg/kg per infusion) during the second component. Rats from the second group, receiving noncontingent footshock presentation, self-administered cocaine (0.125 mg/kg per infusion) at higher rates and at one-half the dose which maintained responding in rats from the other two treatment groups. Plasma corticosterone, measured before the acquisition of cocaine self-administration, was highly correlated with drug intake at this concentration for all three groups of rats. These data demonstrate that non-contingent experimental stress facilitates the acquisition of intravenous cocaine self-administration in rats.

Abstract: An adaptive nonlinear control strategy for a bench-scale pH neutralization system is developed and experimentally evaluated. The pH process exhibits severe nonlinear and time-varying behavior and therefore cannot be adequately controlled with a conventional PI controller. The nonlinear controller design is based on a modified input-output linearization approach which accounts for the implicit output equation in the reaction invariant model. Because the reaction invariants cannot be measured online and the linearized system is unobservable, a nonlinear output feedback controller is developed by combining the input-output linearizing controller with a reduced-order, open-loop observer. The adaptive nonlinear control strategy is obtained by augmenting the non-adaptive controller with an indirect parameter estimation scheme which accounts for unmeasured buffering changes. Experimental tests demonstrate the superior performance of the adaptive nonlinear controller as compared to a non-adaptive nonlinear controller and conventional PI controller. >

Abstract: Work values were examined as an antecedent of recruiters' judgments of applicant fit with the organization. Data were collected on the work values of recruiters, their organizations, and job applicants in actual job interviews conducted through the placement center of a large university. Following the interviews, recruiters evaluated applicants' general employability and organization-specific fit. Approximately 4 months following the interviews, data on whether the applicants were invited for a second interview were also obtained. Work value congruence between the applicant and the recruiter was found to be related to judgments of general employability and organization-specific fit. Congruence between the applicant and the organization (as perceived by the recruiter) was not related to judgments of employability and organization-specific fit. Recruiter ratings of employability were related to the decision to invite the applicant for a second interview. Work value congruence was not related to second interview decisions. It is concluded that if work values and judgments of applicant fit influence the personnel selection process, they are more likely to do so at later stages when job offer decisions are made. Work values and judgments of applicant fit seem to have minimal impact on decisions to retain the applicant for additional consideration in early stages of the selection process.

Abstract: The adenovirus fiber protein is used for attachment of the virus to a specific receptor on the cell surface. Structurally, the protein consists of a long, thin shaft that protrudes from the vertex of the virus capsid and terminates in a globular domain termed the knob. To verify that the knob is the domain which interacts with the cellular receptor, we have cloned and expressed the knob from adenovirus type 5 together with a single repeat of the shaft in Escherichia coli. The protein was purified by conventional chromatography and functionally characterized for its interaction with the adenovirus receptor. The recombinant knob domain bound about 4,700 sites per HeLa cell with an affinity of 3 x 10(9) M-1 and blocked adenovirus infection of human cells. Antibodies raised against the knob also blocked virus infection. By gel filtration and X-ray diffraction analysis of protein crystals, the knob was shown to consist of a homotrimer of 21-kDa subunits. The results confirm that the trimeric knob is the ligand for attachment to the adenovirus receptor.
