Abstract: Coastal lake sediments contain a stratigraphically and chronologically distinct record of major hurricane strikes during late Holocene time. Frederic—a category 3 hurricane that struck the Alabama coast on the Gulf of Mexico in 1979—left a distinct sand layer in the nearshore sediments of Lake Shelby as a result of storm-tide overwash of beaches and dunes. Sediment cores taken from the center of Lake Shelby contain multiple sand layers, suggesting that major hurricanes of category 4 or 5 intensity directly struck the Alabama coast at ca. 3.2-3.0, 2.6, 2.2, 1.4, and 0.8 ka ( 14 C yr), with an average recurrence interval of ∼600 yr. The Alabama coast is likely to be struck by a category 4 or 5 hurricane within the next century.

Abstract: Insulin receptor substrate (IRS) has been suggested as a molecular target of free fatty acids (FFAs) for insulin resistance. However, the signaling pathways by which FFAs lead to the inhibition of IRS function remain to be established. In this study, we explored the FFA-signaling pathway that contributes to serine phosphorylation and degradation of IRS-1 in adipocytes and in dietary obese mice. Linoleic acid, an FFA used in this study, resulted in a reduction in insulin-induced glucose uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. This mimics insulin resistance induced by high-fat diet in C57BL/6J mice. The reduction in glucose uptake is associated with a decrease in IRS-1, but not IRS-2 or GLUT4 protein abundance. Decrease in IRS-1 protein was proceeded by IRS-1 (serine 307) phosphorylation that was catalyzed by serine kinases inhibitor κB kinase (IKK) and c-JUN NH2-terminal kinase (JNK). Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between street centrality and densities of commercial and service activities in the city of Bologna, northern Italy. Street centrality is calibrated in a multiple centrality assessment model composed of multiple measures such as closeness, betweenness, and straightness. Kernel density estimation is used to transform datasets of centrality and activities to one scale unit for analysis of correlation between them. Results indicate that retail and service activities in Bologna tend to concentrate in areas with better centralities. The distribution of these activities correlates highly with the global betweenness of the street network, and also, to a slightly lesser extent, with the global closeness. This confirms the hypothesis that street centrality plays a crucial role in shaping the formation of urban structure and land uses.

Abstract: An overview of properties of polymer–nanoparticle composites in bulk and in solution is presented along with a review of work performed during the last 3 years. The review is particularly focused on organic–inorganic materials such as polymer–nanospheres, tubes, rods, fibers and nanoplatelets. Fundamental studies on flow-induced structures in polymer–particle composites are emphasized. This relatively new area demands sophisticated experiments to augment pragmatic knowledge necessary to support theoretical descriptions of composite structures and properties. The complexity of this area guarantees that this will remain an active field for some time to come.
