TL;DR: Narrow bandgap conjugated polymers in combination with fullerene acceptors, as well as the values used for the absolute potentials of standard electrodes, can complicate the comparison of materials properties and determination of structure/property relationships.
Abstract: Narrow bandgap conjugated polymers in combination with fullerene acceptors are under intense investigation in the field of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The open circuit voltage, and thereby the power conversion efficiency, of the devices is related to the offset of the frontier orbital energy levels of the donor and acceptor components, which are widely determined by cyclic voltammetry. Inconsistencies have appeared in the use of the ferrocenium/ferrocene (Fc + /Fc) redox couple, as well as the values used for the absolute potentials of standard electrodes, which can complicate the comparison of materials properties and determination of structure/property relationships.

TL;DR: A technique for polarization sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) that achieves 22 micrometer two-point spatial resolution over 35 meters of optical length with -97 dB sensitivity in a single measurement taking only seconds is described.
Abstract: We describe a technique for polarization sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) that achieves 22 micrometer two-point spatial resolution over 35 meters of optical length with -97 dB sensitivity in a single measurement taking only seconds. We demonstrate OFDR’s versatility in both time- and frequency-domain metrology by analyzing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in both the spectral and impulse response domains. We also demonstrate how a polarization diversity receiver can be used in an OFDR system to track changes in the polarization state of light propagating through a birefringent component.

TL;DR: This work clears a path towards higher PCEs in OPV devices by demonstrating that high-yield charge separation can occur with OPV systems that have a reduced donor/acceptor lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy offset.
Abstract: A limiting factor of the power conversion efficiencies of organic photovoltaic devices is low voltage output Methano derivatives of the trimetallic endohedral fullerene Lu3N@C80 have now been synthesized and used as the acceptor in organic photovoltaics The open circuit voltage of the devices is significantly above those made using alternative fullerenes So far, one of the fundamental limitations of organic photovoltaic (OPV) device power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) has been the low voltage output caused by a molecular orbital mismatch between the donor polymer and acceptor molecules Here, we present a means of addressing the low voltage output by introducing novel trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerenes (TNEFs) as acceptor materials for use in photovoltaic devices TNEFs were discovered in 1999 by Stevenson et al 1; for the first time derivatives of the TNEF acceptor, Lu3N@C80, are synthesized and integrated into OPV devices The reduced energy offset of the molecular orbitals of Lu3N@C80 to the donor, poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT), reduces energy losses in the charge transfer process and increases the open circuit voltage (Voc) to 260 mV above reference devices made with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric methyl ester (C60-PCBM) acceptor PCEs >4% have been observed using P3HT as the donor material This work clears a path towards higher PCEs in OPV devices by demonstrating that high-yield charge separation can occur with OPV systems that have a reduced donor/acceptor lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy offset

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a position and shape sensing device using an optical fiber means, which consists of either two single core optical fibers or a multicore optical fiber having at least two fiber cores.
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a fiber optic position and shape sensing device and the method of use. The device comprises an optical fiber means. The optical fiber means comprises either at least two single core optical fibers or a multicore optical fiber having at least two fiber cores. In either case, the fiber cores are spaced apart such that mode coupling between the fiber cores is minimized. An array of fiber Bragg gratings are disposed within each fiber core and a frequency domain reflectometer is positioned in an operable relationship to the optical fiber means. In use, the device is affixed to an object. Strain on the optical fiber is measured and the strain measurements correlated to local bend measurements. Local bend measurements are integrated to determine position and/or shape of the object.

TL;DR: In this article, the optical fiber is physically associated with an object and the strain on at least a portion of the fiber where it is associated with the object is determined by an OFDR using one or more Rayleigh scatter patterns.
Abstract: A fiber optic position and/or shape sensing device includes an optical fiber with either two or more single core optical fibers or a multi-core optical fiber having two or more fiber cores. In either case, the fiber cores are spaced apart so that mode coupling between the fiber cores is reduced, and preferably, minimized. The optical fiber is physically associated with an object. Strain on at least a portion of the optical fiber where it is associated with the object is determined by an OFDR using one or more Rayleigh scatter patterns for that portion of the optical fiber. The determined strain is used to determine a position and/or a shape of the object.
