TL;DR: It is shown that this new growth regime is based on a solid-phase diffusion mechanism of a single component through a gold seed particle, as shown by in situ heating experiments of GaAs nanowires in a transmission electron microscope and supported by highly resolved chemical analysis and finite element calculations of the mass transport and composition profiles.
Abstract: Controllable production of nanometre-sized structures is an important field of research, and synthesis of one-dimensional objects, such as nanowires, is a rapidly expanding area with numerous applications, for example, in electronics, photonics, biology and medicine Nanoscale electronic devices created inside nanowires, such as p-n junctions, were reported ten years ago More recently, hetero-structure devices with clear quantum-mechanical behaviour have been reported, for example the double-barrier resonant tunnelling diode and the single-electron transistor The generally accepted theory of semiconductor nanowire growth is the vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism, based on growth from a liquid metal seed particle In this letter we suggest the existence of a growth regime quite different from VLS We show that this new growth regime is based on a solid-phase diffusion mechanism of a single component through a gold seed particle, as shown by in situ heating experiments of GaAs nanowires in a transmission electron microscope, and supported by highly resolved chemical analysis and finite element calculations of the mass transport and composition profiles

TL;DR: Results demonstrate a unique function for LP-derived CD103+ MLN DCs in the generation of gut-tropic effector T cells in vitro.
Abstract: Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) dendritic cells (DCs) display a unique ability to generate CCR9 + α 4 β 7 + gut-tropic CD8 + effector T cells. We demonstrate efficient induction of CCR9 and α 4 β 7 on CD8 + T cells in mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) after oral but not intraperitoneal (i.p.) antigen administration indicating differential targeting of DCs via the oral route. In vitro, lamina propria (LP)–derived DCs were more potent than MLN or Peyer's patch DCs in their ability to generate CCR9 + α 4 β 7 + CD8 + T cells. The integrin α chain CD103 ( α E) was expressed on almost all LP DCs, a subset of MLN DCs, but on few splenic DCs. CD103 + MLN DCs were reduced in number in CCR7 − / − mice and, although CD8 + T cells proliferated in the MLNs of CCR7 − / − mice after i.p. but not oral antigen administration, they failed to express CCR9 and had reduced levels of α 4 β 7. Strikingly, although CD103 + and CD103 − MLN DCs were equally potent at inducing CD8 + T cell proliferation and IFN- γ production, only CD103 + DCs were capable of generating gut-tropic CD8 + effector T cells in vitro. Collectively, these results demonstrate a unique function for LP-derived CD103 + MLN DCs in the generation of gut-tropic effector T cells.

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of the four LEP experiments were combined to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory, including the branching fraction of W and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings.

TL;DR: The authors argue that the use of the species category in the Anthropocene narrative is analytically flawed, as well as inimical to action, and argue that intra-species inequalities are part and parcel of the current ecological crisis and cannot be ignored in attempts to understand it.
Abstract: The Anthropocene narrative portrays humanity as a species ascending to power over the rest of the Earth System. In the crucial field of climate change, this entails the attribution of fossil fuel combustion to properties acquired during human evolution, notably the ability to manipulate fire. But the fossil economy was not created nor is it upheld by humankind in general. This intervention questions the use of the species category in the Anthropocene narrative and argues that it is analytically flawed, as well as inimical to action. Intra-species inequalities are part and parcel of the current ecological crisis and cannot be ignored in attempts to understand it.

TL;DR: An expert panel to critically evaluate and update the evidence to achieve goals to achieve a stable deep molecular response (DMR) and discontinuing medication for treatment-free remission (TFR) in chronic myeloid leukemia.
Abstract: The therapeutic landscape of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has profoundly changed over the past 7 years. Most patients with chronic phase (CP) now have a normal life expectancy. Another goal is achieving a stable deep molecular response (DMR) and discontinuing medication for treatment-free remission (TFR). The European LeukemiaNet convened an expert panel to critically evaluate and update the evidence to achieve these goals since its previous recommendations. First-line treatment is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI; imatinib brand or generic, dasatinib, nilotinib, and bosutinib are available first-line). Generic imatinib is the cost-effective initial treatment in CP. Various contraindications and side-effects of all TKIs should be considered. Patient risk status at diagnosis should be assessed with the new EUTOS long-term survival (ELTS)-score. Monitoring of response should be done by quantitative polymerase chain reaction whenever possible. A change of treatment is recommended when intolerance cannot be ameliorated or when molecular milestones are not reached. Greater than 10% BCR-ABL1 at 3 months indicates treatment failure when confirmed. Allogeneic transplantation continues to be a therapeutic option particularly for advanced phase CML. TKI treatment should be withheld during pregnancy. Treatment discontinuation may be considered in patients with durable DMR with the goal of achieving TFR.
