Regional pattern of degeneration in Alzheimer's disease: neuronal loss and histopathological grading.

Abstract: The various structural components of the cortical degeneration of Alzheimer's disease were defined and graded The severity of the degenerative process was thus mapped in different cortical areas where neuronal numbers and cortical width were also measured and compared with controls Contrary to the general opinion that the degenerative process is rather uniformly diffuse, though accentuated in the medial temporal and frontal cortex, we found a consistent and more elaborate pattern with clearcut regional differences Thus the degeneration involved, besides basal medial temporal limbic areas, the posterior cingulate gyrus and superior parietal lobule particularly, with somewhat less marked changes in the inferior parietal lobule and inferior temporal gyri The sensorimotor, calcarine and anterior cingulate areas of the cortex were notably spared until very late stages This regionally variable severity of the degeneration was also parallelled by a regionally varying reduction in neuronal numbers and cortical width, and agrees with our previously published results of a regional pattern which closely correlates with clinical parameters, including symptom pattern and regional cerebral blood flow alterations

Does conservation on farmland contribute to halting the biodiversity decline

Abstract: Biodiversity continues to decline, despite the implementation of international conservation conventions and measures. To counteract biodiversity loss, it is pivotal to know how conservation actions affect biodiversity trends. Focussing on European farmland species, we review what is known about the impact of conservation initiatives on biodiversity. We argue that the effects of conservation are a function of conservation-induced ecological contrast, agricultural land-use intensity and landscape context. We find that, to date, only a few studies have linked local conservation effects to national biodiversity trends. It is therefore unknown how the extensive European agri-environmental budget for conservation on farmland contributes to the policy objectives to halt biodiversity decline. Based on this review, we identify new research directions addressing this important knowledge gap.

Design and feasibility

Abstract: The Malmo Diet and Cancer study is a 10-year prospective case-control study in 45-64-year-old men and women (n = 53,000) living in a city with 230,000 inhabitants. One objective is to clarify whether a western diet is associated with certain forms of cancer whilst taking other life-style factors into account. Another broad question is whether oxidative stress and the activity in DNA-repairing systems influence the impact of diet on the development of all or certain forms of cancer. The study is also to act as a resource available for testing new hypotheses emanating from other studies. Initially food intake, heredity, socio-economic factors, life-style pattern, occupational situation, previous and current diseases, symptoms and medications, will be determined. Viable lymphocytes, granulocytes, erythrocytes, and plasma/serum will be stored in a biological bank together with tumour specimens gathered from cases. The incidence and mortality of all cancer forms will then be followed for 10 years by existing registries. Data from the initial examination in these cases will then be compared with those of control subjects not having developed any form of cancer. A biomarker programme, utilizing the biological bank, has been developed and is aimed at finding predictors and/or precursors of cancer. A high participation rate (> 70%) and a high quality biological bank are prerequisites for a successful project. The experience gathered so far indicates that these goals are feasible.

Critical performativity: The unfinished business of critical management studies

Abstract: We argue that critical management studies (CMS) should be conceptualized as a profoundly performative project. The central task of CMS should be to actively and pragmatically intervene in specific debates about management and encourage progressive forms of management. This involves CMS becoming affirmative, caring, pragmatic, potential focused, and normative. To do this, we suggest a range of tactics including affirming ambiguity, working with mysteries, applied communicative action, exploring heterotopias and engaging micro-emancipations.
