TL;DR: M1 and M2 macrophage populations are present throughout atherogenesis and these subsets display disparity when it comes to their prevalence in morphological compartments of the vessel wall, warranting continued investigation into the functional implications of polarization populations in human atherosclerosis.

TL;DR: It can be concluded that a RF-signal memory in combination with a PC provides a useful tool to extract detailed diameter waveforms from theRF-signals obtained.
Abstract: Doppler signal processing cannot only be employed to detect the local blood velocity as function of time, but also to assess transcutaneously the displacement of the arterial walls during the cardiac cycle (distension waveform) and, hence, the time-dependent changes in arterial diameter relative to its initial diameter at the start of a cardiac cycle. The distension waveform normalized with respect to the local pulse pressure provides useful information about the local elasticity of the arterial wall. The displacement of the arterial wall can be obtained by processing the RF-signals within a sample volume coinciding with the arterial wall. To evaluate this method a dedicated high-speed memory system has been developed storing the RF-signal, as obtained with a conventional echo-imager in M-mode, over a number of successive sweeps covering a selected depth range. The data are transferred line after line to a personal computer (PC) and processed on the fly, thereby relieving the memory requirements of the PC. It can be concluded that a RF-signal memory in combination with a PC provides a useful tool to extract detailed diameter waveforms from the RF-signals obtained. Although the system does not process the signals in real-time the process can be considered to be on-line since the results become available within one minute after the acquisition of the data is completed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present evidence that measures of social cohesion, such as income inequality and ethnic fractionalization, endogenously determine institutional quality, which in turn causally determines growth.

TL;DR: Retraining automatic processes to approach alcohol may help to regain control over addictive impulses, which points to new treatment possibilities.
Abstract: Aims The main aim of this study was to test whether automatic action-tendencies to approach alcohol can be modified, and whether this affects drinking behaviour. Design and participants Forty-two hazardous drinkers were assigned randomly to a condition in which they were implicitly trained to avoid or to approach alcohol, using a training variety of the alcohol Approach Avoidance Test (AAT). Participants pushed or pulled a joystick in response to picture-format (landscape or portrait). The pictures depicted alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. Participants in the avoid-alcohol condition pushed most alcoholic and pulled most non-alcoholic drinks. For participants in the approach-alcohol condition these contingencies were reversed. After the implicit training, participants performed a taste test, including beers and soft drinks. Automatic action tendencies at post-test were assessed with the AAT, including both trained and untrained pictures, and with a different test (Implicit Association Test, IAT). We further tested effects on subjective craving. Results Action tendencies for alcohol changed in accordance with training condition, with the largest effects in the clinically relevant avoid-alcohol condition. These effects occurred outside subjective awareness and generalized to new pictures in the AAT and to an entirely different test using words, rather than pictures (IAT). In relatively heavy drinking participants who demonstrated changed action tendencies in accordance with their training condition, effects were found on drinking behaviour, with participants in the approach-alcohol condition drinking more alcohol than participants in the avoid-alcohol condition. No effect was found on subjective craving. Conclusions Retraining automatic processes may help to regain control over addictive impulses, which points to new treatment possibilities.

TL;DR: The findings show that dark triad traits are substantially intercorrelated, somewhat more prevalent among men than women, predominantly related to the Big Five personality factor of agreeableness and the HEXACO factor of honesty-humility, and generally associated with various types of negative psychosocial outcomes.
Abstract: The term dark triad refers to the constellation of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Over the past few years, the concept has gained momentum, with many researchers assuming that the dark triad is a prominent antecedent of transgressive and norm-violating behavior. Our purpose in this meta-analytic review was to evaluate (a) interrelations among narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy; (b) gender differences in these traits; (c) how these traits are linked to normal personality factors; and (d) the psychosocial correlates of the dark triad. Our findings show that dark triad traits are substantially intercorrelated, somewhat more prevalent among men than women, predominantly related to the Big Five personality factor of agreeableness and the HEXACO factor of honesty-humility, and generally associated with various types of negative psychosocial outcomes. We question whether dark triad traits are sufficiently distinct and argue that the way they are currently measured is too simple to capture the malevolent sides of personality. Because most research in this domain is cross-sectional and based on self-reports, we recommend using a cross-informant approach and prospective, longitudinal research designs for studying the predictive value of dark triad features.
