TL;DR: In this article, the mobility of rare earth element (REE) during hydrous burial metamorphism is described from three localities, including the Maddina Volcanics, Fortescue Group, Western Australia and the Canadian Keweenawan Series.
Abstract: The mobility of the rare earth element (REE) during hydrous burial metamorphism is described from three localities. Comparison of REE abundances in relict domains and metadomains from flood lavas in the Maddina Volcanics, Fortescue Group, Western Australia shows that, relative to the relict domains, REE may be strongly depleted in certain metadomains. Strong variations in La/Yb, La/Sm and Eu may also occur due to postcrystallization secondary processes. Similar comparisons in flood lavas from Mamainse Point in the Canadian Keweenawan Series show that REE are mobile and increase in abundance in metadomains. Spilites from U.S. Virgin Islands also show evidence for REE mobility during low grade burial metamorphism. In this case light REE (LREE) have been preferentially mobilized with heavy REE (HREE) remaining parallel or sub-parallel on chondrite normalized plots. REE analyses from these locations together with an evaluation of published work suggests that the mobility of REE can be described by: 1. gross REE and selective LREE enrichment; 2. REE movement around a primary mean; 3. gross REE depletion; 4. selective REE mobility. Failure to take into account REE mobility may lead to incorrect conclusions concerning petrogenetic models based on altered basic sequences. The coherence of REE with other key trace elements during alteration is also discussed.

TL;DR: Widespread artefact-bearing gravels overlie Pliocene diatomites in the plain of Gadeb (7°02′-7°13′N, 39° 15′-39°28′E) at 2,300 m in east-central Ethiopia as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Widespread artefact-bearing gravels overlie Pliocene diatomites in the plain of Gadeb (7°02′–7°13′N, 39° 15′–39°28′E) at 2,300 m in east-central Ethiopia. The diatomites are from 2.7 to 2.35 Myr old, and the bulk of the Developed Oldowan and Acheulian tools are between 1.5 and (?) 0.7 Myr old. Drying out of the Pliocene lake, deposition of the gravels, and erosion of the Webi Shebele gorge reflect the interplay of volcano-tectonic and climatic events, as does the biostratigraphy of the Pliocene diatomites.

TL;DR: The chilling-induced impairment of photoreductive activity in chloroplasts provides a useful assay for detecting and measuring differences in the susceptibility of plants to chilling injury.
Abstract: Tomato leaves were detached and stored at 0 C for various periods of time. Chloroplasts were isolated from the leaves and their photoreductive activities were determined. Comparisons were made between two altitudinal forms of the wild tomato Lycopersicon hirsutum Humb. and Bonpl. (a tropical lowlands form and a highlands form adapted to growth at 3,100 meters), and two cultivars of the domestic tomato L. esculentum Mill. In each case the capacity of the isolated chloroplasts to photoreduce ferricyanide declined linearly with time of storage of the leaves at 0 C, but not at 10 C. This injury developed more slowly in the high altitudinal form of the wild tomato compared with the low altitudinal form and the two domestic cultivars indicating an enhanced resistance toward chilling injury in the tomato from 3,100 meters. Chloroplast activity declined in green tomato fruit held at 0 C, at about the same rate as in the chilled leaves. Measurements of photochemical activities in the isolated chloroplasts and in vivo measurements of cytochrome-554 photooxidation in chilled leaves showed that the site of action of the chilling effect was water donation to photosystem II. The chilling-induced impairment of photoreductive activity in chloroplasts provides a useful assay for detecting and measuring differences in the susceptibility of plants to chilling injury.

TL;DR: The Boyd Volcanic Complex as discussed by the authors is an assemblage of intrusive and extrusive silicic rocks intertongue with mafic volcanics and sediments in the southern part of the Eden-Comerong-Yalwal Rift Zone.
Abstract: Intrusive and extrusive silicic rocks intertongue with mafic volcanics and sediments in the southern part of the Eden‐Comerong‐Yalwal Rift Zone. Late Devonian fish occur in the sediments. The present stratigraphic scheme of the ‘Eden Rhyolite’ and the ‘Lochiel Formation’ separated by an unconformity or disconformity is rejected. In its place, we rename the assemblage the Boyd Volcanic Complex, formed in a terrestrial zone of extension. The recognition that the alkaline Gabo Island Granite intrudes the Boyd Volcanic Complex, and that both are overlain by the Upper Devonian Merrimbula Group, provides a tight stratigraphic bracket on a potential point on the radiometric time scale.

TL;DR: In this article, alluvial fans forming along the flanks of fixed dunes in central Niger have developed in cyclic fashion, alternating with fan aggradation and surface stability, when little sediment is removed from the dunes for redeposition on the fans.
Abstract: Summary Alluvial fans forming along the flanks of fixed dunes in central Niger have developed in cyclic fashion. Periods of fan aggradation alternate with periods of fan degradation and with periods of surface stability, when little sediment is removed from the dunes for redeposition on the fans. The different processes probably accompany changes in the bioclimatic regime. Surface stability, with pedogenesis, occurs during relatively humid intervals when both dunes and fans carry a fairly dense and permanent cover of vegetation. Fan degradation on the other hand is promoted by rather arid intervals like the present day. Aggradation occurs when there is at least a greater incidence of intense rainstorms than occur at present. Human influence on the current cycle of degradation appears to be on no greater scale than during earlier cycles. There seems as yet no reason to suspect that with suitable climatic amelioration this region of the Sahel should not again return to a condition of greater surface stability.

TL;DR: The Sociality Scale score (SS) as mentioned in this paper is a content analysis scale for verbalizations, which measures the relationship types of solidarity, intimacy, influence, and undifferentiated shared experience.
Abstract: Conceptualizations of positive interpersonal relationships by Osgood (1970) and Danziger (1976) formed the basis of a content analysis scale for verbalizations. The resulting Sociality Scale score (SS) is the total of 7 subscales. The relationship types of solidarity, intimacy, influence, and undifferentiated shared experience form 1 subset of subscales, and the relationship roles of reactor, initiator and joint actor form the other. SS proved to have acceptable levels of interrater reliability and considerable consistency over time. Verbalizations collected from 540 people experiencing different events were used to establish its validity. As hypothesized, high scorers tended to relate more positively to others, to maintain relationships better with others, to exhibit more interpersonal skills, and to experience less anxiety and hostility than low scorers.

TL;DR: This paper conducted individual structured interviews with 96 sixteen-year-olds, divided into equal social class/sex groups and found that 28 linguistic variables, in combination, distinctly separated the social classes on discriminant function I and that Discriminant Function II separated the groups in terms of the sex dimension.
Abstract: It was hypothesized that specific styles of linguistic coding would be evident along the dimensions of both social class and sex. Individual structured interviews were undertaken with 96 sixteen-year-olds, divided into equal social class/sex groups. The verbatim transcripts were examined along selected aspects of linguistic coding: structure, elaboration, prepositional and pronominal usage, and speech disruptions. Discriminant function analysis, extended and supplemented by analysis of variance, was used to test the hypothesis of differential coding patterns for the social class/sex groups. The discriminant analysis showed that the 28 linguistic variables, in combination, distinctly separated the social classes on Discriminant Function I and that Discriminant Function II separated the groups in terms of the sex dimension.

TL;DR: This paper reviewed the ways in which the introduction of television affects the daily lives of children and adults and examined activities displaced by television, and summarized the main streams of research evidence on television's influence and the likely implications for both further research and the development and implementation of social policy.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter sheds light at the manner in which the characteristics of television vary from country to country. It reviews the ways in which the introduction of television affects the daily lives of children and adults and examine activities displaced by television. It also examines the effects of televised violence on the viewer's aggressive behavior followed by the summarization of other aspects of television's impact, such as the influence of prosocial messages and advertising. The chapter further reviews the area of “uses and gratifications” research and examines the notion that the audience is selective in its use of television. Finally, the chapter describes recent research on television as a definer of “reality” and the role that the television plays as an agenda setter, and purveyor of attitudes and values. The chapter concludes by summarizing the main streams of research evidence on television's influence and the likely implications for both further research and the development and implementation of social policy.

TL;DR: The depolarized forward‐scattered light from solutions of rat tail collagen has been studied by photon correlation spectroscopy and the measured autocorrelation function is seen to decay on two widely different time scales.
Abstract: The depolarized forward-scattered light from solutions of rat tail collagen has been studied by photon correlation spectroscopy. The measured autocorrelation function is seen to decay on two widely different time scales. The decay time for the fast component is consistent with the rotational diffusion of rodlike collagen monomers. The slowly decaying autocorrelation component is attributed to large nonspecific aggregates of collagen. A substantial fraction of the collagen is in this aggregated form. Extrapolation of the faster decay times to zero concentration yields a value of θ = 1082 ± 30 sec−1 for the rotational diffusion coefficient of the collagen monomer.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that some men were able to experience a measure of equality, but only through the labour of women as full-time housewives and low-paid super-exploited workers in factories, shops and offices.
Abstract: It is now generally accepted that Australian society is neither classless nor egalitarian. But, while the ’embourgeoisment’ hypothesis has been firmly rejected (Connell, 1977; Wild, 1978), we need to examine the ways in which the ideology of embourgeoisment is generated and lived. This paper concentrates on the development of new consumption patterns, the increasing uniformity of family form and the extension of the suburban dream, in relation to a continuing reorganisation of the dominant structure of sexuality. In particular we argue that some men were able to experience a measure of equality, but only through the labour of women as full time housewives and low paid super-exploited workers in factories, shops and offices. The boom conditions following World War Two enabled a sizeable proportion of the working class to achieve the ideal of homeownership and a privatised family life in the suburbs. The suburban dream centred on women’s role in the home as full-time wives and mothers; but its achievement depended on their contribution as domestic and wage labourers. It was based on a clearcut gender division and unequal power relations between men and women. Along with the sexual division of labour went a construction of sexuality which emphasised the polarity between male and female. Being appropriately ’masculine’ or ’feminine’ became the key to personal fulfilment. There was a ’sexualisation’ of everyday life through the invocation of sexual desire that could not be fulfilled. This explains how at the personal level people found consumerism so attractive and meaningful. Commodities themselves took on an erotic significance, since they offered to fulfil the ideals of masculinity and femininity. This new pattern of consumption was a central part of the suburban dream.
