Abstract: White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) of the black tiger prawn Penaeus monodon is a recently discovered baculo-like virus disease which is currently the cause of very serious and widespread losses in the shrimp industry in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia. Three suspected crab carriers of this virus commonly found in shrimp-rearing areas were investigated. These were Sesarma sp., Scylla serrata and Uca pugilator. All these crabs could be infected with WSSV by injection and they sustained heavy viral infections for up to 45 d (confirmed by normal histology, specific in situ DNA hybridization and PCR amplification) without visible signs of disease or mortality. All of them also transferred the disease to P. monodon via water while physically separated in aquarium cohabitation tests. Transfer of the virus to the shrimp was monitored using in situ DNA hybridization and PCR assay at 12 h intervals after cohabitation began. With U. pugilator, WSSV could be detected in the shrimp cohabitants after 24 h using PCR amplification and after 60 h using in situ hybridization. With S. serrata, the shrimp were positive for WSSV after 36 h using PCR and after 60 h using DNA in situ hybridization. With Sesarma sp. they were positive after 48 h using PCR and 72 h using in situ hybridization. These laboratory studies demonstrated that crab carriers of WSSV may pose a real threat to cultivated shrimp. However, the studies were carried out in containers with a small volume and with relatively clean sea water as compared to shrimp cultivation ponds. Pond-based studies are now needed to determine whether factors such as pond volume, pond water quality and shrimp and crab behavior can influence the rate and success of transfer.

Abstract: Pseudomonas pseudomallei causes the disease melioidosis, with protean manifestations, protracted clinical course and unpredictable response to antimicrobial treatment. Intracellular location of the organism is suspected to be the cause of these properties. This study was undertaken to examine the intracellular growth of this bacterium. Intracellular growth and survival was assessed at different time intervals, by Gram's stain and electronmicroscopic examination. During the first 5 h, the numbers of P. pseudomallei within phagocytes did not change significantly. By 18-21 h, gram-stained preparations revealed that P. pseudomallei cells completely filled the phagocytes and electronmicroscopy showed evidence of binary fission. During that time the number of cfu of P. pseudomallei growing simultaneously in vitro increased by log10 2-3. The phagocytes remained viable throughout the observation period and retained their capacity to produce an oxidative burst for the first hour of incubation. The ability of P. pseudomallei to survive and multiply in phagocytes shows that it is a facultative intracellular bacterium. This finding is relevant to the selection of antimicrobial regimens, and the management of the disease.

Abstract: Background: Behavioral risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity and the harmful use of alcohol are known and modifiable contributors to a number of NCDs and health mediators. The purpose of this paper is to describe the distribution of main risk factors for NCDs by socioeconomic status (SES) among adults aged 50 years and older within a country and compare these risk factors across six lower- and upper-middle income countries. Methods: The study population in this paper draw from SAGE Wave 1 and consisted of adults aged 50-plus from China (N=13,157), Ghana (N=4,305), India (N=6,560), Mexico (N=2,318), the Russian Federation (N=3,938) and South Africa (N=3,836). Seven main common risk factors for NCDs were identified: daily tobacco use, frequent heavy drinking, low level physical activity, insufficient vegetable and fruit intake, high risk waist-hip ratio, obesity and hypertension. Multiple risk factors were also calculated by summing all these risk factors. Results: The prevalence of daily tobacco use ranged from 7.7% (Ghana) to 46.9% (India), frequent heavy drinker was the highest in China (6.3%) and lowest in India (0.2%), and the highest prevalence of low physical activity was in South Africa (59.7%). The highest prevalence of respondents with high waist-to-hip ratio risk was 84.5% in Mexico, and the prevalence of self-reported hypertension ranging from 33% (India) to 78% (South Africa). Obesity was more common in South Africa, the Russia Federation and Mexico (45.2%, 36% and 28.6%, respectively) compared with China, India and Ghana (15.3%, 9.7% and 6.4%, respectively). China, Ghana and India had a higher prevalence of respondents with multiple risk factors than Mexico, the Russia Federation and South Africa. The occurrence of three and four risk factors was more prevalent in Mexico, the Russia Federation and South Africa. Conclusion: There were substantial variations across countries and settings, even between upper-middle income countries and lower-middle income countries. The baseline information on the magnitude of the problem of risk factors provided by this study can help countries and health policymakers to set up interventions addressing the global non-communicable disease epidemic.

Abstract: Rice husk ash is mainly composed of silica and carbon black remaining from incomplete combustion. Both silica and carbon black have long been recognized as the main reinforcing fillers used in the rubber industry to enhance certain properties of rubber vulcanizates, such as modulus and tensile strength. In this study, two grades of rice husk ash (low- and high-carbon contents) were used as filler in natural rubber. Comparison was made of the reinforcing effect between rice husk ashes and other commercial fillers such as talcum, china clay, calcium carbonate, silica, and carbon black. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis was employed to study the presence of functional groups on the ash surface. The effect of silane coupling agent, bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)tetrasulfane (Si-69), on the properties of ash-filled vulcanizates was also investigated. It was found that both grades of rice husk ash provide inferior mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus, hardness, abrasion resistance, and tear strength) in comparison with reinforcing fillers such as silica and carbon black. However, the mechanical properties of the vulcanizates filled with rice husk ash are comparable to those filled with inert fillers. The addition of silane-coupling agent has little effect on the properties of the ash-filled vulcanizates.
