Abstract: Interactions between Zn and Cd on the accumulation of these metals in coontail, Ceratophyllum demersum were studied at different metal concentrations. Plants were grown in nutrient solution containing Cd (0.05–0.25 mg l−1) and Zn (0.5–5 mgl−1). High concentrations of Zn caused a significant decrease in Cd accumulation. In general, adding Cd solution decreased Zn accumulation in C. demersum except at the lowest concentration of Zn in which the Zn accumulation was similar to that without Cd. C. demersum could accumulate high concentrations of both Cd and Zn. The influence of humic acid (HA) on Cd and Zn accumulation was also studied. HA had a significant effect on Zn accumulation in plants. 2 mg l−1 of HA reduced Zn accumulation at 1 mg l−1 level (from 2,167 to 803 mg kg−1). Cd uptake by plant tissue, toxicity symptoms and accumulation at 0.25 and 0.5 mg l−1, were reduced (from 515 to 154 mg kg−1 and from 816 to 305 mg kg−1, respectively) by addition of 2 mg l−1 of HA. Cd uptake reached a maximum on day 9 of treatment, while that of Zn was observed on day 15. Long-term accumulation study revealed that HA reduced toxicity and accumulation of heavy metals.

Abstract: 62 Thai and 56 U.S. college students were examined on altruism and helping behavior. Thai-Buddhist culture has traditionally taught the importance of prosocial behaviors. Participants were administered the Self-Report Altruism (SRA) Scale, a specially developed projective measure (Altruism Apperception Test) and an indepth interview. Thais scored significantly higher than U.S. subjects on the SRA Scale (p < .001), and manifested a greater tendency to both offer altruistic projections on the AAT (p < .001) and report that they would personally help in such situations (p < .001). An exploratory, mediational analysis performed on the interview data of a subset of participants revealed that Thais appealed to religion as a reason for helping significantly more than Americans (p < .001), while Americans specifically mentioned religion was not a reason significantly more than Thais (p = .002). Findings suggest a relationship between socio-cultural-religious values and prosocial behavior in that Thai-Buddhist-affiliative-collectivistic society appears more altruistically-oriented than the American relatively more areligious achievement or individualistic-based society. Recommendations are that further studies be conducted to support the validation of the projective measure and explore the possible influence of the spirituality and individualism-collectivism constructs.

Abstract: Recent development in iodonium-induced reactions of alkynols is discussed and analysed herein. ClassicalMeyer-Schuster and Rupe rearrangements are described as a background to the main body of iodonium-inducedreactions. α-Iodoenones derived from rearrangement of alkynols, known herein as the Iodo Meyer-Schusterreaction, links the classical Meyer-Schuster reaction to the novel reaction of iodonium-induced rearrangement ofalkynols. The rearrangements leading to the formations of β-haloenones and β,β-dihaloenones and enals arediscussed with mechanistic considerations, which include stereospecificity of the migrating group and themigratory aptitude differences between the phenyl and the alkyl groups. The role of solvents – namely the watercontent in organic solvent – is presented with mechanistic consideration of the role of the allenol, the haloniumbridge cation intermediates and water in dictating each different reaction pathways. The application of therearrangement reaction to biological interesting molecules such as glucofuranose and xylofuranose is discussed.Haloetherification reaction, the third type of halonium-induced alkynol reaction, was found to be the exclusivereaction in the halogenation of alkynol derivative of hexofuranoses.
