Thai Consumers Willingness to Pay for Food Products with Geographical Indications

Abstract: Geographical Indication (GI) is a name, or sign, that refers to a specific characteristic of geographical location or origin. GI is used to both protect and guarantee that the product has a unique characteristic, resulting from being qualifiedly produced in a specific place. There are many products in Thailand that have been certified by the Ministry of Commerce, carrying the GI label. The purpose of conducting this research is to study Thai consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for products with GI labels. This experiment was carried out under the n th price auction method on Doi Tung coffee, Tung Kula Ronghai Thai Hom Mali rice, and Chaiya salted eggs. Sixty participants were asked to offer bids for three products each with different types of labels, a normal label; a label stating the product’s origin; and a label which stated the product’s origin and contained a GI sign. The results show that Thai consumers’ WTPs are influenced by the origin of the product. However, the WTPs of GI labels do not significantly differ from the WTPs of labels which state the product’s origin. This implies that Thai consumers value the product’s origin, but do not recognize the importance of the GI label.

Exploring the Agency Cost of Debt: Evidence from the ISS Governance Standards

Abstract: Corporate governance is usually viewed in the context of strengthening shareholder rights and enhancing shareholders’ welfare. However, the impact of corporate governance on bondholders is much less understood. We explore how corporate governance influences the cost of debt financing. Using broad governance metrics encompassing fifty governance attributes reported by The Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), we document that stronger corporate governance is associated with a higher cost of debt. As governance strengthens by one standard deviation, the cost of debt rises by as much as 11 %. The results are robust even after controlling for both firm-specific and issue-specific characteristics. Our results are important because they suggest that corporate governance has a palpable effect on critical corporate outcomes such as credit ratings and bond yields. More importantly, we show that, while corporate governance may mitigate the agency conflict between managers and shareholders, it appears to exacerbate the agency conflict between shareholders and bondholders (the agency cost of debt).

A DFT investigation of the blue bottle experiment: E∘half-cell analysis of autoxidation catalysed by redox indicators

Abstract: The blue bottle experiment is a collective term for autoxidation reactions catalysed by redox indicators. The reactions are characterized by their repeatable cycle of colour changes when shaken/left to stand and intricate chemical pattern formation. The blue bottle experiment is studied based on calculated solution-phase half-cell reduction potential of related reactions. Our investigation confirms that the reaction in various versions of the blue bottle experiment published to date is mainly the oxidation of an acyloin to a 1,2-dicarbonyl structure. In the light of the calculations, we also propose new non-acyloin reducing agents for the experiment. These results can help guide future experimental studies on the blue bottle experiment.

Effects of unconventional recreational drug use in pregnancy.

Abstract: Recreational drug toxicity is a rapidly evolving aspect in clinical practice. The prevalence of recreational drug abuse in the past decade has achieved an epidemic scale due to invention of new agents and ease of accessibility to the abused drugs. "Unconventional recreational drugs" is the term that includes new psychoactive drugs and medications diverted for recreational goals. Misuse of unconventional recreational drugs during pregnancy can affect both the pregnant woman and the fetus. However, the problems are usually unrecognized and overlooked by healthcare professionals. In this articles, obstetric complications, teratogenicity and neonatal abstinence syndrome from exposure during pregnancy to synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic cathinones, tramadol, kratom, olanzapine, quetiapine, ketamine and ketamine are reviewed. The main purpose is to create awareness about maternal, fetal and neonatal effects of these unconventional recreational drugs, so healthcare professionals will have improved vigilance for these under-recognized issues.
