TL;DR: In this article, the authors used an unsupervised machine learning technique, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), to identify the experiential dimensions of URT travellers from TripAdvisor reviews and to compare URTNs worldwide.
Abstract: Urban rail transit networks (URTNs) are essential for sustainability, equity and liveability of cities worldwide. Recent studies have explored ways in which URTNs can improve traveller experiences; however, the lack of a comprehensive method to benchmark URTNs worldwide and the lack of travellers’ voices and attitudes in conceptualisation call for a new technique to identify and assess URT traveller experience. This research aimed to uncover the experiential dimensions of URT travellers from TripAdvisor reviews and to compare URTNs worldwide. The research scope included 185,485 reviews on TripAdvisor collected from 127 URTNs in 123 cities. Data were analysed using an unsupervised machine learning technique, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). The analysis found eleven experiential dimensions: card, ticketing, direction, communication, architecture, network, performance, safety, crowd, connectivity and traffic. Subsequent salience-valence analyses identified factors that drive positive and negative experiences. This study presents a rapid and insightful method to assess traveller experiences. URTNs worldwide can use this technique to analyse and improve their services.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the effect of overall corporate governance quality on CEO luck and show that an improvement in governance quality by one standard deviation diminishes CEO luck by 14.77-21.06%.
Abstract: CEOs are “lucky” when they receive stock option grants on days when the stock price is the lowest in the month of the grant, implying opportunistic timing. Extending the work of Bebchuk, Grinstein, Peyer (2010), we explore the effect of overall corporate governance quality on CEO luck. Provided by the Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS), our comprehensive governance metrics are much broader than those used in prior studies, encompassing more diverse aspects of corporate governance, such as audit, state laws, boards, ownership, and director education. We show that an improvement in governance quality by one standard deviation diminishes CEO luck by 14.77-21.06%. The governance standards recommended by ISS appear to be effective in deterring the opportunistic timing of option grants.

TL;DR: In this paper, two clock reactions, oxygen-safranin-benzoin clock and cysteine-iodine-hydrogen peroxide clock, were proposed to demonstrate chemical kinetics using inexpensive and commonly available chemicals.
Abstract: Quantitative demonstration of chemical kinetics often requires sophisticated equipment and materials. By using inexpensive and commonly available chemicals, we propose here two clock reactions, oxygen–safranin–benzoin clock and cysteine–iodine–hydrogen peroxide clock. Students simply measure and add stock solutions to start clock reactions. Sudden discoloration or coloration of the reaction mixture marks the end of the reaction, and this can be conveniently timed. Students then complete calculations and graphing in a spreadsheet file by following common protocols. Rates of reaction are calculated from the ratio of [limiting reactant]0 and clock time. Orders of reactions and rate constants are determined by the method of initial rate. Additional discussions on topics such as catalysis, reaction mechanism, redox reaction, and pseudo-zeroth-order reaction are also possible.

TL;DR: The authors discusses the ethnic categories created by the colonial authorities and looks into how these ethnic categories have been -and continue to be -imagined, invented, manipulated, and politicised.
Abstract: Burma faced independence in 1948 as a deeply divided country. The British had ruled the area, which now was declared the ‘Union of Burma’ under two entirely different administrative systems. ‘Burma Proper’ was basically populated by the ethnic Burmans, Arakanese, Mons and Delta Karens, whereas the ‘Frontier Areas’ were populated by the Shan people, Salween Karens, Kachins, Karennis, Chins and various subgroups of the aforementioned. The same year, as independence was granted, the Union of Burma plunged into a civil war, which still continues. This article discusses the ethnic categories created by the colonial authorities and looks into how these ethnic categories have been – and continue to be – imagined, invented, manipulated and politicised. The article looks into how the Burmese authorities dealt with the ethnic diversity in the first constitution of 1947 by dividing the country into ethnically based ‘states’ and ‘divisions’ and how the international community of today continues supporting these colon...
