TL;DR: The famous Desnanot-Jacobi-Dodgson identity is combined with automated proof techniques to derive a compact and nice formula for Andrews's determinant, and is used to solve a challenge problem that was posed in a previous paper.

Abstract: This paper analyses how a transformative service provider delivers self-reliance training in an attempt to improve well-being. The training process is examined for value propositions and value facilitation from the production phase of value creation in service-dominant (SD) logic. The analysis of value creation is supported by practice theory, which has become influential in literature on SD logic. More specifically, the paper utilises the concepts of field, habitus, and practice from Bourdieu’s theory of practice. The analysis demonstrates that the service provider attempts to embed value in the value production phase, firstly by situating practices within the broader field of self-reliance to emphasise its benefits, and secondly by introducing key aspects of the self-reliant habitus which are important for improving one’s well-being.

TL;DR: In this article, a pinhole near the bottom of the device and lowering it into the sample allows the sample to enter the device, and the device is sealed by wetting of cotton with propylene glycol inside the device.
Abstract: A novel device for trapping gaseous compounds was invented and employed to create a user-friendly cyanide test kit for aqueous solutions. This specially designed device is housed in a small polypropylene straw with one end sealed. The device is packaged with chemicals to liberate, trap and quantify hydrogen cyanide gas. Piercing a pinhole near the bottom of the device and lowering it into the sample allows the sample to enter the device. When a sufficient amount of sample has entered the device, the device is sealed by wetting of cotton with propylene glycol inside the device. The hydrogen cyanide gas is generated by reacting the sample with sulfuric acid inside the device. The produced hydrogen cyanide is trapped by potassium hydroxide, and it is detected by the reaction between p-nitrobenzaldehyde and o-dinitrobenzene, using cyanide ions as a catalyst, to produce a purple compound of o-nitrophenyl hydroxylamine dianions. Within 10 minutes, this method provides a linear working range of 0.02–0.20 mg L−1 CN−. The calibration line has a coefficient of determination of 0.99. Moreover, this device does not require any addition of chemicals by users, thus increasing its safety and ease of use. The developed device was applied to measure the concentration of cyanide in natural water, fresh bamboo shoots, and fruit juice.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a method that assesses the levels of sustainability in towns in Thailand from various dimensions and multiple perspectives, including comparability, dynamism, availability, comprehensibility, effectiveness, and sufficiency.
Abstract: The purpose of the current research is to develop a method that assesses the levels of sustainability in towns in Thailand from various dimensions and multiple perspectives. The three-pronged assessment illustrates the integration of the three perspectives, namely, those of residents, the physical reality, and the local government; such an integration is important yet limited in the existing literature. This assessment also attempts to overcome some of the challenges of sustainability indicators, including comparability, dynamism, availability, comprehensibility, effectiveness, and sufficiency. The scope of this study consists of ten towns in the six provinces in the vicinity of Bangkok, which are at risk of sprawling development from Bangkok. To determine the levels of resident perceptions, the authors used a cluster random sampling method to collect data from 2157 respondents. Thirty-six indicators were used to assess the physical reality. Regarding the investments of the local government, 488 projects of the 10 towns were categorised based on the 11 dimensions of place sustainability. Towns can use this method to monitor the efficiency of investments over time and to plan more effective investments. A workshop was organised for towns to adjust project planning according to the Four-Action Framework.
