TL;DR: The authors explored English language teachers' perceptions and their classroom practices toward the application of teaching the 'common good' by incorporating a moral and ethical side of education to English Language Teaching (ELT).
Abstract: This study aimed to explore English language teachers’ perceptions and their classroom practices toward the application of teaching the ‘common good’ by incorporating a moral and ethical side of education to English Language Teaching (ELT). The data were collected by using a mixed-method approach consisting survey questionnaire, semi-structured interview, and class observations. Thirty teachers who taught English language at an international university located in Thailand participated in this study. The results revealed that the English language teachers do have a positive perception of the significance and value of cultivating students to achieve the common good in order to help them grow as virtuous citizens. However, their practices in classroom did not match the general perceptions as their behaviors were more focused towards linguistic effectiveness rather than wise guidance. It is recommended that language teachers raise awareness of the holistic aspect of education by valuing the social role of language in ELT.

TL;DR: Inheritance is regulated in the sixth book of the Civil and Commercial Code and is conceived of as a separate institute as discussed by the authors, which regulates transmission of the estate of a deceased person after his death, the statutory rights of inheritance, the succession by will, and the administration of an estate.
Abstract: Inheritance is regulated in the sixth book of the Civil and Commercial Code and is conceived of as a separate institute. It, among other things, regulates the transmission of the estate of a deceased person after his death, the statutory rights of inheritance, the succession by will, and the administration of an estate. The title to the estate of a deceased person may be derived under a statutory rule or under a disposition made by the deceased.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors look at the history of a Muslim village and its interaction with the surrounding establishments and conclude that while the villagers might be reasonably knowledgeable about basic Islamic teachings and practices, they appear to be detached from the Islamic origins and history of the community.
Abstract: This paper looks at the history of a Muslim village and its interaction with the surrounding establishments. The Muslim village Baan Yai is located just adjacent to one of the huge golf courses of Hua Hin, an upscale, traditional beach resort accommodating the Summer Palace of the King Rama IX and offering world-class golf courses. Even though the village is close to one of the three university campuses and a golf course, the latter are unaware of its existence. The paper also raises the question of the role of this community in the wider ummah both in Thailand and overseas while presenting a brief discussion of relevant aspects of the history of Thai Muslims. The paper concludes that while the villagers might be reasonably knowledgeable about basic Islamic teachings and practices, they appear to be detached from the Islamic origins and history of the community. This relative historical discontinuity is only matched by deliberate spatial fragmentation caused by the administrative structure of the village. Keywords: golf courses, history of Thai Muslims, Muslim village, pondok, spatial fragmentation, ummah

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the notions of authenticity in Thai contemporary theatre, focusing on popular Broadway-style musical theatre performed in Bangkok and produced by commercial theatre companies, and propose that such aspects of authenticity help modern theatre gain popularity and success.
Abstract: This chapter examines the notions of the ‘authentic’ in Thai contemporary theatre, and it focuses on popular Broadway-style musical theatre performed in Bangkok and produced by commercial theatre companies. Thai theatre has maintained an authentic representation of Thai culture and identity for many centuries through various types of traditional performances. Although traditional theatre in Thailand has gradually been overshadowed by these contemporary Western-influenced musical theatres, this chapter discusses the reasons why Thai audiences are attracted to modern productions that incorporate traditional elements familiar to the locals. This chapter also proposes that such aspects of authenticity help modern theatre gain popularity and success.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors exploit the variation in religious piety across U.S. counties and states and show that firms located in a more religious environment are indeed less likely to make poor acquisitions, measured by the stock market reactions to the acquisition announcement.
Abstract: Prior research shows that religion promotes honesty. Honesty in turn motivates managers to view an expropriation from shareholders as self-serving, opportunistic, and unethical, thereby alleviating the agency conflict. Religious piety is thus expected to discourage agency-driven acquisitions that reduce shareholder wealth. We exploit the variation in religious piety across U.S. counties (and states) and show that firms located in a more religious environment are indeed less likely to make poor acquisitions, measured by the stock market reactions to the acquisition announcement. To draw a causal inference, we use historical religious piety as far back as 1952 as our instrument. The 2SLS analysis confirms that religious piety induces firms to make better acquisitions. Our analysis based on propensity score matching also corroborates the conclusion.
