TL;DR: The T fibre has all the properties required of a warning system responding to pulsed high-frequency sound, and it responds well to bat cries, but there is, however, no evidence that it mediates a behavioural response.
Abstract: 1. The responses of the auditory interneurones indicate that the tettigoniid ear discriminates frequencies. 2. The T fibre receives strong ipsilateral and weak contralateral excitatory inputs and a strong contralateral inhibitory input, from the tympanic nerves. These inputs are frequency-sensitive, the response being greatest at 30 kcyc./sec. and above. Responsiveness is low in the region of 15 kcyc./sec., which is the dominant song frequency. 3. At 30 kcyc./sec. the T fibre is most sensitive to amplitude increments, and conveys maximal directional information. Both the T fibre and the ear (as judged by the compound potential in the tympanic nerve) respond to steps of 2 dB. The directionality of the ear is enhanced by the contralateral inhibitory connexions of the T fibre. At 15 kcyc./sec. directionality is poor, but is present at 10 kcyc./sec. 4. The T fibre is inhibited by continuous sounds, including the species song. The extent of the inhibitory effect varies with the amplitude of the continuous sound. This may assist in explaining the ‘phasic’ response of the T fibre. There is little habituation to repetitive stimuli. 5. A small interneurone seen in split connectives gives a ‘tonic’ response to song and to continuous sound. It may inhibit the T fibre. Two other auditory fibres are occasionally recorded in the connectives. 6. The T fibre has all the properties required of a warning system responding to pulsed high-frequency sound, and it responds well to bat cries. There is, however, no evidence that it mediates a behavioural response.

TL;DR: This article established the monotypic genus Propotto, which was the only member of the assemblage that could be placed with certainty in one of the two recognized lorisid sub-families.
Abstract: REVIEWING the Miocene Lorisidae of Kenya and Uganda, Simpson1 established the new monotypic genus Propotto, which he considered was the only member of the assemblage that could be placed with certainty in one of the two recognized lorisid sub-families. He states, “Propotto is doubtless a lorisine if the (sub-familial) distinction is valid for the Miocene”.

TL;DR: Several authors1–4 have suggested that this particular type of vascular arrangement is related to the ability of these animals to maintain a strong prehensile grip with both hands and feet for prolonged periods of time.
Abstract: IN the lorises, most of the principal blood vessels of the limbs become complex vascular bundles formed by a linear arrangement of many more or less parallel arteries and veins. In cross-section these vessels have a quite regular lattice-work arrangement without any arterial venous anastomoses. Major nerves may pass in the fascial sheath enclosing the whole complex, which is sometimes called a rete mirabile. Fig. 1 shows a typical cross-section of a brachial vascular bundle with its many vessels and neural tissue including a pacinian corpuscle in the sheath. Several authors1–4 have suggested that this particular type of vascular arrangement is related to the ability of these animals to maintain a strong prehensile grip with both hands and feet for prolonged periods of time. Alternatively, others5 have presented experimental evidence that similar vascular bundles in the limbs of sloths are a mechanism for conserving body heat by the principle of counter current heat exchange.

TL;DR: In sixteen factorial field trials with N, P, K, Mg, trace element and farmyard manure treatments, yields declined during the first four years of cropping following a resting period under grass.
Abstract: In sixteen factorial field trials with N, P, K, Mg, trace element and farmyard manure treatments, yields declined during the first four years of cropping following a resting period under grass, responses to K and farmyard manure increased, and other treatments showed no significant changes. After a few years of continuous cropping potassium deficiency may seriously limit yields, especially of sweet potatoes. N, P and K fertilizers maintained yields as well as the farmyard manure treatment.

TL;DR: Growth after withdrawal of methionine was in some cases accompanied by accumulation of transfer RNA (tRNA), which was shown by methylation in vitro to be deficient in methyl groups, and this accumulation appears to be correlated with the position of the strain's block in the pathway of Methionine biosynthesis.
Abstract: Haploid methionine auxotrophs of Saccharomyces cerevisiae continue to multiply for several hours after withdrawal of a required amino acid from the medium. Macro-molecular synthesis continues during this period of residual growth, although the net ribonucleic acid (RNA) and protein content is constant during the later part of this period. In this study, growth after withdrawal of methionine was in some cases accompanied by accumulation of transfer RNA (tRNA), which was shown by methylation in vitro to be deficient in methyl groups. This phenomenon was shown by only four of nine methionine auxotrophs tested, but no evidence could be found that these four strains had “relaxed” control of RNA synthesis. The nine methionine-requiring strains represent mutations in five different positions in the methionine biosynthesis pathway, and only mutants blocked at two of these five positions accumulated methyl-deficient tRNA. This accumulation therefore appears to be correlated with the position of the strain's block in the pathway of methionine biosynthesis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the adsorption of CO2 on outgassed sepiolite (from Amboseli, Tanzania) at 193°, 209·7°, 273·2°, and 298·2 °K using a gravimetric method.
Abstract: Summary Sepiolite has a microporous structure the pores of which may be penetrated to differing extents by molecules of different gases. A study has been made of the adsorption of CO2 on outgassed sepiolite (from Amboseli, Tanzania) at 193°, 209·7°, 273·2°, and 298·2 °K using a gravimetric method. Values of the surface area of sepiolite were calculated from BET (Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller) and Kaganer plots of results, assuming molecular areas for CO2 based on extrapolated liquid densities. There were only relatively small deviations from a mean value of 279 m2/g. However, the values were much lower than those previously determined by adsorption of N2 and of other gases. It is suggested that CO2 adsorbed at these temperatures should be assumed to be in the liquid state, but that the usual method of calculating the molecular areas of adsorbed CO2 from the liquid densities at these temperatures yields values which are too low. Molecular areas of 20·8 A2 at 193 °K and 23·4 A2 at 209·7 °K are preferred. Isosteric heats of adsorption at different coverages were calculated from the isotherms. The results indicated heterogeneity of the surface, with decreases in the values of the heat of adsorption occurring at low coverages and in the‘monolayer region’. They compare well with values calculated from the BET equation.

TL;DR: Analysis of spleen weights by age shows that from 15–24 years of age onwards the immigrant groups have very much heavier spleens than the indigenous people, adding circumstantial support to the concept of an exaggerated response to malaria in non-immune or partially-immune subjects.
Abstract: In a study of spleen weights at autopsy in Mulago Hospital it has been shown that splenomegaly is more usual than a “normal” spleen, and gross splenomegaly (idiopathic tropical splenomegaly) appears to represent the extreme of a distribution curve skewed towards the heavier spleens. Subjects originating from areas of low malarial endemicity have in general far heavier spleens than those indigenous to this area of high malarial endemicity. In the groups subject to marked splenic enlargement, cirrhosis of the liver greatly increases this tendency but it does not do so to the same degree in the indigenous subjects. Males tend to have a higher frequency of large spleens than females. Analysis of spleen weights by age shows that from 15–24 years of age onwards the immigrant groups have very much heavier spleens than the indigenous people. This is the age at which most immigrants come to Buganda for the first time and this adds circumstantial support to the concept of an exaggerated response to malaria in non-immune or partially-immune subjects. Studies of the immunological constitution of Rwanda and Ganda subjects living in the Kampala region reveal marked differences. The Rwanda have higher malarial antibody titres and these are associated with IgM levels and high frequencies of autoantibodies to several tissues. Idiopathic tropical splenomegaly is held to represent an exaggerated immunological response to malaria in individuals from relatively malaria-free areas who are first exposed to the parasite in early adult life or in individuals exposed to malaria under unstable conditions of transmission and infection.
