TL;DR: Tilapias exhibited a high incidence of nematode infection and the available evidence indicates that fish-eating birds are important predators of cichlids in Nyumba ya Mungu, where plantivorous and piscivorous fish are absent but omnivores are represented by Barbus species and Synodontis punctulatus.
Abstract: Twenty species of fish were found in Nyumba ya Mungu reservoir on the River Pangani which, with two exceptions, were indigenous to the river basin. Their distribution is described and some information on their growth, reproduction and feeding habits is presented. The highest densities of fish were found in the littoral and the broad, shallow, upstream region of the lake. The lacustrine environment has favoured the endemic tilapias, Sarotherodon jipe and S. pangani, which graze periphyton, and the introduced species, S. esculentus which feeds on phytoplankton. Males of the endemic forms may grow to a large size, but the introduced species, including Tilapia rendalli, were heavier for a given length. A reduction in tilapia stocks since 1970 is reflected in experimental catches during 1972-74 and was attributed to the combined effects of heavy commercial exploitation and a loss of spawning grounds. In the same period a striking increase in the populations of small carnivores, Rhabdalestes leleupi and Haplochromis gr. bloyeti, was recorded. Kully plantivorous and piscivorous fish are absent but omnivores are represented by Barbus species and Synodontis punctulatus. Tilapias exhibited a high incidence of nematode infection and the available evidence indicates that fish-eating birds are important predators of cichlids in Nyumba ya Mungu.

TL;DR: There was found to be only slight variation in incidence between different age and sex groups and there was no convincing evidence that immigrants from high altitude areas, where the disease is rare, were at different risk.
Abstract: In the five-year period 1964–1968 1,335 patients were admitted to Mulago Hospital, Kampala, with tropical myositis. The marked increase in the number of admissions during the study period is attributed to a change in the utilization of the hospital rather than to a true increase in the incidence of the disease. There was found to be only slight variation in incidence between different age and sex groups and there was no convincing evidence that immigrants from high altitude areas, where the disease is rare, were at different risk. There was statistically significant month-to-month variation in admission rates but there was no apparent correlation with rainfall, and no marked seasonal variation. During the quinquennium there was a changing pattern of admission rates for patients from different counties, and some evidence of ‘space-time’ clustering. These findings are compatible with the primary muscle damage being induced by a virus or the presence of aberrant hookworm larvae, but an ingested toxin cannot be excluded. Trauma may also play a role in determining localization of the disease in some cases.

TL;DR: The cause of male sterility in 3 soybean lines, TGM 103-1, N-69-2774 and TGM 242-4, both of which were partially sterile, resulted from a failure of cytokinesis after the telophase II stage.
Abstract: The cause of male sterility in 3 soybean lines, TGM 103-1, N-69-2774 and TGM 242-4 was studied. In TGM 103-1, which was both male and female sterile, two different abnormalities were associated with sterility. Precocious movement of a few chromosomes at the metaphase I stage resulted into the production of non-functional pollen while cells which underwent apparent normal meiotic division had disintergration of the tapetal cell wall immediately after the free microspore stage leading to the starvation and subsequent death of the developing microspores. In lines N-69-2774 and TGM 242-4, both of which were partially sterile, male sterility resulted from a failure of cytokinesis after the telophase II stage. Meiosis proceeded normally but the 4 microspores after telophase II failed to separate into pollen grains and degenerated thereafter.

TL;DR: The activities of phospholipases A and B were found to be low soon after larviposition but were observed to increase gradually with pupal age until about day 15, and the increase in activity after day 15 was more dramatic reaching a peak soon after the emergence of the fly.
Abstract: 1. 1. Phospholipases of Glossina morsitans during pupal and adult fly developmental stages were investigated. 2. 2. Only phospholipases A and B were detectable, phospholipases C and D were not detected. 3. 3. Phospholipases A and B were affected by factors such as, pH, deoxycholate and Ca 2+ in a way similar to phosphospholipases from other sources. 4. 4. The activities of phospholipases A and B were found to be low soon after larviposition but were observed to increase gradually with pupal age until about day 15. The increase in activity after day 15 was more dramatic reaching a peak soon after the emergence of the fly.
