TL;DR: In this paper, two auxiliary variables were used to construct two regression-type estimators for the population mean of the study variabley and the efficiency of the proposed estimators is investigated under a super-population model.
Abstract: In this paper, we use two auxiliary variablesx andy to construct two regression-type estimators for the population mean of the study variabley. The efficiency of the proposed estimators is investigated under a super-population model. A numerical study is done to demonstrate the practical use of different estimation formulae and empirically demonstrate the performance of the constructed estimators.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that weak dominance in terms of payoffs is equivalent to weak dominance of regret, and that regret is a better measure of regret than strong dominance of one strategy over another.
Abstract: The paper deals with decision making under conditions of linear partial information, i.e. when probabilities of states of nature are not known precisely, but are subject to linear constraints. Conditions ensuring strict and weak statistical dominance of one strategy over another are derived. It is also shown that weak dominance in terms of payoffs is equivalent to weak dominance in terms of regrets. The new results are more general than those obtained by Fishburn and by Kmietowicz and Pearman for weak and strict ranking of probabilities, and include them as special cases. The new results can be employed in practical decision making in several ways.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of selective timber harvesting on natural treefall rates in the Kibale Forest, Uganda, were studied and the results indicated that levels of destruction typical of capital intensive mechanised timber harvesting seriously disrupt the dynamic balance of the forest.
Abstract: Only a small percentage of tropical forests are legally protected and so, if we are to conserve tropical forest species we must encourage sustainable exploitation of unprotected forest areas. Selective timber harvesting is frequently cited as a sustainable use of tropical forests and the authors studied the effects of this kind of exploitation on natural treefall rates, an important regulative process, in the Kibale Forest, Uganda. Their results indicate that levels of destruction typical of capital intensive mechanised timber harvesting seriously disrupt the dynamic balance of the forest. They discuss alternative methods for selective timber harvesting that would be less disruptive and present an objective method which may help rain forest managers determine which multiple-use options are compatible with rain forest conservation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented evidence for the bivariate lognormal distribution of household size and income and suggested a number of possible uses of the results, which was fitted to rural and urban data for Iraq and to rural data for Kenya.
Abstract: The paper presents evidence for the bivariate lognormal distribution of household size and income describes several convenient properties of the model and suggests a number of possible uses of the results. The model was fitted to rural and urban data for Iraq and to rural data for Kenya and promising results were obtained. Empirical evidence presented by other investigators is consistent with the model and suggests that it may be applicable to other developing countries. (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: Mixtures of these crops were found to significantly reduce the amount of notching of the bean leaflets by the weevil and weevil relative populations when compared to the sole bean crops, and to increase emigration from the more diverse plots.
Abstract: —This paper briefly discusses insect pest responses in mixed crop stands, their peculiarities and possible crop protection advantages. Results on the effects of a bean-oat diculture on the movements and feeding activity of the adult pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L. are presented and discussed. Mixtures of these crops were found to significantly reduce the amount of notching of the bean leaflets by the weevil and weevil relative populations are compared to the sole bean crops, and to increase emigration from the more diverse plots.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that a norm order continuous injective Banach lattice is order isomorphic to an (AL)-space, where the lattice can be expressed as a norm bounded linear operator.
Abstract: LetE be a 1-injective Banach lattice,X any Banach space andT: E ← X a norm bounded linear operator. Then eitherT is an isomorphism on some copy ofl ∞ inE or for all σ > 0 there is φ ∈E + ′ such that ‖Tu‖≦φ (|u|)+σ ‖u‖ for allu ∈E. We deduce the theorem that: A norm order continuous injective Banach lattice is order isomorphic to an (AL)-space.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors extend Fishburn's analysis of statistical dominance of one strategy by another to the case of strict ranking of probabilities of states of nature conditions ensuring strict dominance are derived.
Abstract: In this paper the authors extend Fishburn's analysis of statistical dominance of one strategy by another to the case of strict ranking of probabilities of states of nature Conditions ensuring strict dominance are derived, and it is shown that Fishburn's results for weak ranking of probabilities are a special case of the more general results presented here Conditions for weak dominance, a criterion proposed elsewhere by the authors, are also derived The latter results are particularly useful when strict dominance cannot be established This happens frequently in practice Two numerical examples, one concerned with employment planning and the other with transport investment, illustrate possible areas of application of this approach to decisionmaking and show the ease with which the calculations can be made
