Abstract: In this paper, we seek to develop an understanding of the human driven by a commitment to the politics of disability, especially those of people with intellectual disabilities. Our position as family members and allies to people associated with this phenomenon of intellectual disability influences our philosophical conceptions and political responses. This has led us recently to develop a theory of dis/human studies which, we contend, simultaneously acknowledges the possibilities offered by disability to trouble, reshape and re-fashion the human (crip ambitions) while at the same time asserting disabled people's humanity (normative desires). We sketch out four dis/human considerations: (1) dis/autonomy, voice and evacuating the human individual; (2) dis/independence, assemblage and collective humanness; (3) dis/ability politics, self-advocacy and repositioning the human; and (4) dis/family: desiring the normal, embracing the non-normative. We argue that this feeds into the wider project of dis/ability studies, and we conclude that we desire a time when we view life through the prism of the dishuman (note, without the slash).

Abstract: Herein, we report a complete additively manufactured (AM) electrochemical sensing platform. In this approach, a fully AM/3D-printed electrochemical system, using a conventional low-cost 3D printer (fused deposition modeling) fabricating both the conductive electrodes and the nonconductive/chemically inert electrochemical cell is reported. The electrodes (working, counter, and pseudo-reference) are AM using a conductive fused-filament comprised of a mixture of carbon black nanoparticles and polylactic acid (CB/PLA). AM components partially coated with silver ink presented a similar behavior to a conventional Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The performance of the AM working electrode was evaluated after a simple and fast polishing procedure on sandpaper and electrochemical activation in a NaOH solution (0.5 mol L-1). Following the electrochemical activation step, a considerable improvement in the electrochemical behavior (current intensity and voltammetric profile) was obtained for model analytes, such as dopamine, hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride, ferricyanide/ferrocyanide, uric acid, and ascorbic acid. Excellent repeatability (RSD = 0.4%, N = 10) and limit of detection (0.1 μmol L-1) were obtained with the all complete AM electrochemical system for dopamine analysis. The electrochemical performance of the developed system (after simple electrochemical activation of the working electrode) was similar or better than those obtained using commercial glassy carbon and screen-printed carbon electrodes. The results shown here represents a significant advance in AM (3D printing) technology for analytical chemistry.

Abstract: In animal models, prenatal and postnatal stress is associated with elevated hypothalamic–pituitary axis (HPA) reactivity mediated via altered glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene expression. Postnatal tactile stimulation is associated with reduced HPA reactivity mediated via increased GR gene expression. In this first study in humans to examine the joint effects of prenatal and postnatal environmental exposures, we report that GR gene (NR3C1) 1-F promoter methylation in infants is elevated in the presence of increased maternal postnatal depression following low prenatal depression, and that this effect is reversed by self-reported stroking of the infants by their mothers over the first weeks of life.

Abstract: Long-term bed rest has potential risks of bone loss and renal stone formation. We examined the effects of resistive exercise and intravenous pamidronate on BMD, bone turnover, urinary calcium, and renal stone formation in 25 healthy males during 90-day bed rest. Pamidronate prevented femoral bone loss and renal stone formation, but resistive exercise showed little effects. Introduction: Long-term bed rest increases the risks of bone loss and urinary stone formation. Resistive exercise increases bone formation, and bisphosphonates reduce bone resorption. However, the effects of muscle exercise and bisphosphonates have not been examined side-by-side. The objectives of this study are to compare the effects of pamidronate with resistive exercise on BMD and renal stone formation during prolonged bed rest. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five male white volunteers, 26–45 years of age, were randomly assigned to the control (n = 9), exercise (n = 9), and pamidronate (n = 7) groups and underwent 90-day 6° head-down tilt bed rest. Exercise group performed squats and heel raises on a flywheel device for 30 minutes every 3 days. Pamidronate (60 mg) was administered intravenously 14 days before bed rest. BMD of the head, forearm, lumbar spine, and proximal femur; biochemical bone markers; calcium (Ca) metabolism; and abdominal radiographs were examined during 90 days of bed rest and 360 days of reloading. Results: In controls, proximal femoral BMD decreased, and bone resorption markers and urinary Ca increased during bed rest, along with development of renal stones in two of nine subjects. Resistive exercise increased bone formation but was unable to prevent femoral BMD decrease and increases in bone resorption and urinary Ca during bed rest, with formation of renal stones in four of nine subjects. Pamidronate maintained femoral BMD, reduced bone resorption and urinary Ca, and completely prevented renal stone formation. Conclusions: Resistive exercise increased bone formation but could not reduce bone resorption and the risk of renal stones. In contrast, inhibition of bone resorption by pamidronate could preserve bone mineral and reduce the risk of renal stone formation during prolonged bed rest.
