Cognitive knowledge and soccer performance

Abstract: This study tested the proposition that experienced soccer players exhibit greater task-specific cognitive knowledge than novice players. 12 experienced and 12 inexperienced subjects viewed structured and unstructured soccer action sequences on a 3.65-m2 video projection screen. In recalling specific player positions following brief 10-sec. film clips, inexperienced players had larger recall of errors than the experienced players on structured trials only. This indicated that experienced players' cognitive knowledge permitted more meaningful associations between players' positions resulting in more efficient retrieval. When recognition of previously viewed film clips was examined, experienced subjects were more accurate in recognising structured trials only. Experienced soccer players seem to have a more complex and discriminating organisation of long-term memory which facilitates the encoding of task-specific information.

Noise versus Access: The Impact of an Airport in an Urban Property Market

Abstract: The effects of a major airport are unlikely to exhibit a uniform spatial distribution. The benefits to industries and individual households may extend well beyond the local economy, whereas many of the costs are spatially concentrated in the immediate environment. In particular, the problems of noise and traffic generation can be expected to fall principally upon adjacent populations. This paper addresses the general question of whether the costs to local economies of airport proximity, which are in the nature of externalities, outweigh the benefits of access, employment and improved infrastructure. Based on data relating to Manchester airport and its surrounding areas, the specific approach adopted in the paper involves an investigation of the extent to which such proximity effects are capitalised into residential property prices. Developing absorptive capacity in mature organizations : the change agent’s role

Abstract: considerable amount of research into how organizations absorb new knowledge was prompted by the work of Cohen and Levinthal. In a recent literature review Zahra and George identify two distinct elements of absorptive capacity (potential and realized). This article contributes to the study of managerial agency in the absorption of new knowledge and skills. Zahra and George’s model is extended to incorporate key roles associated with knowledge transfer, including gatekeepers, boundary spanners and change agents. Empirical data are drawn from a longitudinal study of a mature manufacturing firm based in North Wales. Change was initiated by the owner in response to the loss of the company’s major customer—the Ministry of Defence. The main change agent was a recently recruited middle manager who used his mass production experience to improve managerial communications and introduce more efficient working practices to the shopfloor.
