Abstract: Neuropathic, metabolic, hormonal, nutritional and immunological factors contribute to the development of sarcopenia. This loss of muscle mass associated with ageing, is a main cause of muscle weakness, but the loss of muscle strength typically exceeds that of muscle size, with a resulting decrease in force per unit of muscle cross-sectional area. Recent evidence suggests that, in addition to a reduction in neural drive and in fibre specific tension, changes in muscle architecture contribute significantly to the loss of muscle force through alterations in muscle mechanical properties. Older muscle, however, maintains a high degree of plasticity in response to increased loading since considerable hypertrophy and a reversal of the alterations in muscle architecture associated with ageing are observed with resistive training.

Abstract: The effects of high-frequency initial pulses (HFIP) and posttetanic potentiation on mechanical power output during concentric contractions were examined in the in situ medial gastrocnemius of the rat with an intact origin on the femur and blood supply. Stimulation of the muscle was performed via the severed sciatic nerve. In the experiments, HFIP or the potentiating tetanus was followed by a stimulation of 80, 120, or 200 Hz. The results showed that both HFIP and the tetanus increased power output at high contraction velocities (>75 mm/s) when followed by a train of 80 or 120 Hz (200 Hz resulted in no effects). Mechanical power output was increased maximally by HFIP to 120 and 168% by the tetanus. Furthermore, when HFIP or the tetanus were followed by a train of 80 Hz, the peak power in the power-velocity curve tended to be shifted to a higher velocity.

Abstract: Various studies have shown that the population densities of a number of forest vertebrates, such as orangutans, are higher on Sumatra than Borneo, and that several species exhibit smaller body sizes on Borneo than Sumatra and mainland Southeast Asia. It has been suggested that differences in forest fruit productivity between the islands can explain these patterns. Here we present a large-scale comparison of forest fruit production between the islands to test this hypothesis. Data on fruit production were collated from Sumatran and Bornean sites. At six sites we assessed fruit production in three forest types: riverine, peat swamp and dryland forests. We compared fruit production using time-series models during different periods of overall fruit production and in different tree size classes. We examined overall island differences and differences specifically for fruiting period and tree size class. The results of these analyses indicate that overall the Sumatran forests are more productive than those on Borneo. This difference remains when each of the three forest types (dryland, riverine, and peat) are examined separately. The difference also holds over most tree sizes and fruiting periods. Our results provide strong support for the hypothesis that forest fruit productivity is higher on Sumatra than Borneo. This difference is most likely the result of the overall younger and more volcanic soils on Sumatra than Borneo. These results contribute to our understanding of the determinants of faunal density and the evolution of body size on both islands.

Abstract: During peak hours in urban areas, unpredictable traffic congestion caused by en route events (e.g., vehicle crashes) increases drivers' travel time and, more seriously, decreases their travel time reliability. In this paper, an original and highly practical vehicle rerouting system, which is called Next Road Rerouting (NRR), is proposed to aid drivers in making the most appropriate next road choice to avoid unexpected congestions. In particular, this heuristic rerouting decision is made upon a cost function that takes into account the driver's destination and local traffic conditions. In addition, the newly designed multiagent system architecture of NRR allows the positive rerouting impacts on local traffic to be disseminated to a larger area through the natural traffic flow propagation within connected local areas. The simulation results based on both synthetic and realistic urban scenarios demonstrate that, compared with the existing solutions, NRR can achieve a lower average travel time while guaranteeing a higher travel time reliability in the face of unexpected congestion. The impacts of NRR on the travel time of both rerouted and nonrerouted vehicles are also assessed, and the corresponding results reveal its higher practicability.

Abstract: In the men’s javelin event the athlete throws an 800g implement into a 40° sector. The objective is to throw as far as possible. Compared with most other throwing implements, the javelin is relatively aerodynamic. Even so, the most important release parameter is still the release speed. Maximising this parameter gives the athlete the best chance of attaining success in the event.
