Abstract: Curcumin, a natural constituent of Curcuma longa (turmeric, CAS 458-37-7) was formulated as prolonged release biodegradable microspheres for treatment of inflammation. Natural biodegradable polymers, namely, bovine serum albumin and chitosan were used to encapsulate curcumin to form a depot forming drug delivery system. Microspheres were prepared by emulsion-solvent evaporation method coupled with chemical cross-linking of the natural polymers. Curcumin could be encapsulated into the biodegradable carriers upto an extent of 79.49 and 39.66% respectively with albumin and chitosan. Different drug:polymer ratios did not affect the mean particle size or particle size distribution significantly. However, the concentration of the crosslinking agent had remarkable influence on the drug release. In-vitro release studies indicated a biphasic drug release pattern, characterized by a typical burst-effect followed by a slow release which continued for several days. Evaluation of antinflammatory activity using Freund's adjuvant induced arthritic model in Wistar rats revealed significant difference between both the formulations, albumin microspheres and chitosan micropheres as well as against control. It was evident from the present study that the curcumin biodegradable microspheres could be successfully employed as prolonged release drug delivery system for better therapeutic management of inflammation as compared to oral or subcutaneous route.

Abstract: Fungal endophytes of tropical trees are expected to be exceptionally species rich as a consequence of high tree diversity in the tropics and the purported host restriction among the endophytes. Based on this premise, endophytes have been regarded as a focal group for estimating fungal numbers because their possible hyperdiverse nature would reflect significantly global fungal diversity. We present our consolidated ten-year work on 75 dicotyledonous tree hosts belonging to 33 families and growing in three different types of tropical forests of the NBR in the Western Ghats, southern India. We conclude that endophyte diversity in these forests is limited due to loose host affiliations among endophytes. Some endophytes have a wide host range and colonize taxonomically disparate hosts suggesting adaptations in them to counter a variety of defense chemicals in their hosts. Furthermore, such polyphagous endophytes dominate the endophyte assemblages of different tree hosts. Individual leaves may be densely colonized but only by a few endophyte species. It appears that the environment (the type of forest in this case) has a larger role in determining the endophyte assemblage of a plant host than the taxonomy of the host plant. Thus, different tropical plant communities have to be studied for their endophyte diversity to test the generalization that endophytes are hyperdiverse in the tropics, estimate their true species richness, and use them as a predictor group for more accurate assessment of global fungal diversity.

Abstract: We report a comprehensive study on influence of oxygen partial pressure on NiO thin films grown on glass substrates in a combined argon and oxygen ambience by reactive dc magnetron sputtering. In this present article, we have discussed the dependence of oxygen pressure on structural, chemical, morphological, optical and electrical properties of the sputtered NiO films. Glancing angle x-ray diffraction reveals that the deposited films were polycrystalline in nature with FCC phase. The preferred orientation changes from (200)to (111)in a higher O2 flow rate environment and an average particle size was estimated using Scherrer relation. The surface morphology of films was studied by using atomic force microscopy. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis demonstrates the core level Ni 2p spectra over a range of 850 eV to 885 eV of binding energy and observed Ni 2p3/2, Ni 2p1/2 domains along with their satellite peaks. It infers the presence of both Ni+2 and Ni+3 oxidation states in the sputtered films. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy was carried out to confirm the structural defects level and crystalline nature of the films. The optical results show that deposited films were semi-transparent and the evaluated optical band gap of the material lies in the range 3.36 eV to 3.52 eV. The extracted electrical properties infer either n-type or p-type conductivity depending on the processing conditions of the films.
