Abstract: Transitions in the dynamics of complex systems can be characterized by changes in the synchronization behavior of their components. Taking the human cardiorespiratory system as an example and using an automated procedure for screening the synchrograms of 112 healthy subjects we study the frequency and the distribution of synchronization episodes under different physiological conditions that occur during sleep. We find that phase synchronization between heartbeat and breathing is significantly enhanced during non-rapid-eye-movement (non-REM) sleep (deep sleep and light sleep) and reduced during REM sleep. Our results suggest that the synchronization is mainly due to a weak influence of the breathing oscillator upon the heartbeat oscillator, which is disturbed in the presence of long-term correlated noise, superimposed by the activity of higher brain regions during REM sleep.

Abstract: This experimental study examined the influence of followers' personal characteristics on their perception of leadership. Participants were 175 students who self-rated several personality scales (extraversion, neuroticism, personal need for structure, and occupational self-efficacy) at Time 1. Two weeks later, participants were divided into two groups and were presented a vignette about a transformational or a nontransformational leader. Subsequently, respondents were asked to rate the described leader's behavior on the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Results revealed that followers high in extraversion tended to perceive more transformational leadership, and showed a more positive evaluation of transformational leadership than did followers with low extraversion. Moreover, perceived transformational leadership predicted the acceptance of a leader, but followers' personality traits did not moderate the relationship between perceived transformational leadership and acceptance.

Abstract: Plant nucleotide binding/leucine-rich repeat (NLR) immune receptors are activated by pathogen effectors to trigger host defenses and cell death. Toll-interleukin 1 receptor domain NLRs (TNLs) converge on the ENHANCED DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY1 (EDS1) family of lipase-like proteins for all resistance outputs. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) TNL-mediated immunity, AtEDS1 heterodimers with PHYTOALEXIN DEFICIENT4 (AtPAD4) transcriptionally induced basal defenses. AtEDS1 uses the same surface to interact with PAD4-related SENESCENCE-ASSOCIATED GENE101 (AtSAG101), but the role of AtEDS1-AtSAG101 heterodimers remains unclear. We show that AtEDS1-AtSAG101 functions together with N REQUIRED GENE1 (AtNRG1) coiled-coil domain helper NLRs as a coevolved TNL cell death-signaling module. AtEDS1-AtSAG101-AtNRG1 cell death activity is transferable to the Solanaceous species Nicotiana benthamiana and cannot be substituted by AtEDS1-AtPAD4 with AtNRG1 or AtEDS1-AtSAG101 with endogenous NbNRG1. Analysis of EDS1-family evolutionary rate variation and heterodimer structure-guided phenotyping of AtEDS1 variants and AtPAD4-AtSAG101 chimeras identify closely aligned ɑ-helical coil surfaces in the AtEDS1-AtSAG101 partner C-terminal domains that are necessary for reconstituted TNL cell death signaling. Our data suggest that TNL-triggered cell death and pathogen growth restriction are determined by distinctive features of EDS1-SAG101 and EDS1-PAD4 complexes and that these signaling machineries coevolved with other components within plant species or clades to regulate downstream pathways in TNL immunity.

Abstract: Fetal microchimerism, the engraftment of fetal progenitor cells into maternal tissues, has been implicated in the etiology of autoimmune diseases. We used PCR analysis to determine whether microchimerism occurred in the thyroid glands of female patients suffering from Hashimoto's disease and thus may be involved in its etiology. PCR amplification was performed from thyroid gland specimens using primers unique to a Y-chromosomal sequence (SRY gene) and primers for a sequence that is Y/X-chromosomal homologous except for a 6-bp deletion in the X-chromosomal sequence (amelogenin). Microchimerism was detected in 8 of 17 Hashimoto patients, but in only 1 of 25 controls (nodular goiters). Both groups were of similar age and had comparable numbers of pregnancies and numbers of sons. All individuals with microchimerism had given birth to at least 1 son. Our results show that microchimerism is significantly more common in Hashimoto patients than in patients suffering from nodular goiter. We therefore suggest that microchimerism might play a role in the development of Hashimoto's disease, although we cannot completely eliminate the hypothesis that microchimerism is just an "innocent bystander" in a process triggered by other mechanisms.
