TL;DR: Ten cases of an unusual form of carcinoma involving the submucosal glands and ducts of the nasal and oral cavities and the larynx were collected and reviewed and found to be extremely aggressive and highly malignant.
Abstract: Ten cases of an unusual form of carcinoma involving the submucosal glands and ducts of the nasal and oral cavities and the larynx were collected and reviewed. The histopathologic features were defined and four distinct component parts were classified: ductal carcinoma in situ, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and a mixed carcinoma. This tumor was found to be extremely aggressive and highly malignant, with 80% of the cases showing histopathologically proven metastases. The histopathologic features and the clinical behavior of this tumor were sufficiently distinctive to warrant the designation adenosquamous carcinoma. The mode of therapy was evaluated and the treatment of choice appears to be radical surgery. However, the limited number of cases indicates that further collection and subsequent analyses of additional cases must be performed before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.

TL;DR: The heart was enlarged, with the point of maximal intensity in the sixth left inter costal space 2 cm.
Abstract: lungs were clear to percussion and ausculta tion. The heart was enlarged, with the point of maximal intensity in the sixth left inter costal space 2 cm. lateral to the midclavicular line. There was a grade IV/VI harsh sys tolic murmur at the apex which was trans mitted to the axilla. The tender edge of the liver was palpable 3 cm. below the right costal margin. The spleen was not palpable. Any movement of the trunk or lower ex tremities elicited pain in the sacral region. A trace of edema was present in the ankles. No embolic lesions were noted in the ex tremities and there was no clubbing of the fingers.

TL;DR: Two major hypotheses or propositions are presented: 1.
Abstract: As is well known, the severely burned patient is highly susceptible to infection (Liedberg et al., 1954; Artz & Teschan, 1957; Altemeier & MacMillan, 1962; Tumbusch et al., 1962). Although his life may be saved during the immediate postburn circulatory shock phase, he may die later with an overwhelming infection. The exact cause or causes for this increased susceptibility of the postburn patient to the development of severe infections and bacteremias are certainly not well worked out. There comes a time in scientific investigations when one cap or must step back from individual experiments, look over a whole field of knowledge, try to see exactly where we are, and try to find out what experiments should be done next. Thus the purpose of this paper is to utilize several kinds of knowledge' in order to establish new working hypotheses (i.e., testable guesses) on the problems presented by the susceptibility of the postburn human being to infection. This paper presents two major hypotheses or propositions : 1. A part of the increased susceptibility to the development of severe infections probably is a direct result of the enforced postponement of the selective ingestion of bacteria by phagocytic cells. 2. The fluids now necessarily given to the postburn patients to save their lives during the postburn circulatory shock interlude may be postponing or preventing bacteria from entering phagocytic cells.

TL;DR: Alanosine is an inhibitor of glutamic acid carboxy-lyase (C-L) of bacterial origin, but not of those from squash and rat brain, while other bacterial amino acid C-L's tested, while sensitive to hydroxylamine, are not inhibited by alanosine.
Abstract: SummaryAlanosine is an inhibitor of glutamic acid carboxy-lyase (C-L) of bacterial origin, but not of those from squash and rat brain. Its action is competitive in respect to glutamic acid, but noncompetitive in respect to pyridoxal phosphate. Other bacterial amino acid C-L's tested, while sensitive to hydroxylamine, are not inhibited by alanosine.

TL;DR: With the doses used, propanidid had a more distinct effect on myocardial contractile force, blood pressure and right atrial pressure than methohexital and the differences were statistically significant.
Abstract: SUMMARY The cardiovascular effect of the new ultrashort-acting nonbarbituric intravenous anaesthetic agent propanidid (Epontol®) was investigated and compared with anaesthetically equipotent doses of methohexital (Brietal®) in open-chest rabbits under pentobarbital anaesthesia. With the doses used, propanidid had a more distinct effect on myocardial contractile force, blood pressure and right atrial pressure than methohexital. The differences were statistically significant.

TL;DR: His enduring contribution to proctology—past, present and future—namely, the founding and development of an institution devoted to diseases of the rectum and colon—the St. Mark’s Hospital.
Abstract: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Frederick Salmon, an English surgeon, little known in his lifetime, this presentation focuses attention on his books which, when originally written, promoted few manifestations of interest and concern, and calls attention to his enduring contribution to proctology—past, present and future—namely, the founding and development of an institution devoted to diseases of the rectum and colon—the St. Mark’s Hospital.

TL;DR: Recovery of Clostridium perfringens in rhesus monkeys was considerably higher and proved to be an autochthonous organism for those animals receiving cholesterol as a dietary supplement and there was no indication, however, that C. perfringen would lower blood cholesterol levels of conventionalized animals as has been suggested by other reports dealing with monocontamination of germ free animals.
