TL;DR: It is confirmed that a single dose of l-dopa stimulates growth hormone secretion and fasting levels of glucose and growth hormone remained unchanged in normal subjects and in patients with Parkinson's disease.
Abstract: The effect of l-dopa on glucose, insulin, growth hormone, and thyroxin in plasma was studied in 8 normal subjects and in 7 patients with Parkinson's disease Growth hormone increased 60–110 min following a single oral dose of 500 mg of l-dopa Stimulation of growth hormone release by l-dopa was inhibited by the iv infusion of phentolamine, an α-adrenergic blocking agent The single dose of l-dopa had no effect on the concentration of glucose, insulin, or thyroxine In patients with Parkinson's disease, treated with 2–3 g l-dopa daily for 2–3 weeks, fasting levels of glucose and growth hormone remained unchanged The “k” of glucose disappearance and insulin levels in plasma after an iv glucose load were not significantly affected Fasting plasma insulin and thyroxine increased during l-dopa therapy Maximum plasma growth hormone levels after iv insulin were less during l-dopa treatment than during the control period Our results confirm that a single dose of l-dopa stimulates growth hormone secretion This

TL;DR: The results support a multiple component theory of electrodermal activity and level of tonic skin conductance was only minimally responsive to the manipulation of psychological stress but increased greatly during cognitive and perceptual activity.
Abstract: Sixteen high trait anxious and 16 low trait anxious male Ss were assigned to a high stress (HS) or a low stress (LS) condition and were given differentially stressful instructions. All Ss were then required to perform a complex cognitive task, the Halstead Category Test. Adjusted indices of tonic and phasic exosomatic electrodermal activity were monitored throughout the experiment. Level of tonic skin conductance (SC) was only minimally responsive to the manipulation of psychological stress but increased greatly during cognitive and perceptual activity. Phasic activity increased significantly following psychological stress but not following cognitive and perceptual activity. It was concluded that these results support a multiple component theory of electrodermal activity. Phasic electrodermal activity appears to increase with psychological as well as physical threat and was suggested to be a good index of autonomic emotional arousal. Tonic SC appears to change mainly as a function of cognitive activity.

TL;DR: New dimensions to the pineal-hypothalamic-pituitary axis are suggested by direct application to the pituitaries of frogs which had been previously darkened by removal of the hypothalamus.
Abstract: Increased melanocyte-lightening activity was found in the plasma of hypophysectomized rats as assayed by direct application to the pituitaries of frogs which had been previously darkened by removal of the hypothalamus. A decrease in this activity by destruction of the hypothalamus of the hypophysectomized rat suggested that MSH release-inhibiting factor (MIF) was involved. Pinealectomy of the hypophysectomized rat or extraction of the plasma with chloroform also decreased the plasma melanocyte-lightening activity, indicating the contribution of melatonin to the lightening effect. The presence of increased amounts of both Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2 (PLG), an MIF, and melatonin in the plasma of hypophysectomized rats, as compared with intact controls, was supported by the use of thin-layer chromatography. In addition, a potentiating action of PLG upon the skin lightening activity of melatonin was observed. These experiments suggest new dimensions to the pineal-hypothalamic-pituitary axis. TL;DR: Evidence of cell damage includes loss of cytoplasmic density, vesiculation of endoplasmic reticulum, appearance of large lipid droplets within cells, and invasion of the epithelium by lymphoid elements.
Abstract: Isoproterenol, which stimulates cell replication in rat salivary gland acinar cells also produces cytoplasmic disruption in these cells, although there is apparently little resultant cell death. Evidence of cell damage includes loss of cytoplasmic density, vesiculation of endoplasmic reticulum, appearance of large lipid droplets within cells, and invasion of the epithelium by lymphoid elements.

TL;DR: In this paper, the identity and composition of the toxic constituents of Dieffenbachia plants have not been established, although numerous chemical and biological studies have been conducted on Dieffenachia plants.
Abstract: Although numerous chemical and biological studies have been conducted on Dieffenbachia plants, the identity and composition of the toxic constituents has not been established. Bigelow (3) first reported that the acrid property in species of Arum (A. triphyllum) appears to depend upon a distinct vegetable pripcipal which is extremely volatile and disappears almost entirely upon heating, drying or simple exposure. Madaus (18) implicated a poisonous alkaloid, glycoside or a bitter substance to be the toxic substance. Madaus and Koch (19) postulated that it might be of hormonal nature. Calcium oxalate (raphides) was considered but, according to Barnes (1) the amount of soluble or total oxalate was no more than is found in several edible vegetables. Barnes suggested a sapotoxin. He found that water and acid extracts of D. picta and D. seguine contained a low concentration of toxic constituents as compared to expressed juice and that juice from the stem is more irritating than of the petiole or leaf. Drach and Maloney (8) and Dore (7) implicated insoluble and/or soluble oxalate or glycosidal principles. Pohl (21, 22) suggested a protein. In this investigation, the authors found that Dieffenbachia seguine, D. amoena and D. picta all contain L-asparagine and a proteolytic enzyme. Long sharp raphides of calcium oxalate are also present in the leaf blade. Fur-

TL;DR: An osteosarcoma of the interatrial septum is reported, and four cases of primary malignancies of the heart containing bone and cartilage are reviewed.
Abstract: An osteosarcoma of the interatrial septum is reported, and four cases of primary malignancies of the heart containing bone and cartilage are reviewed. The various theories on the histogenesis of these tumors are discussed, and the postulate that these tumors arise from fibrous tissue which has undergone metaplasia into malignant bony and cartilaginous elements is favored. This tumor had all of the microscopic criteria for an osteosarcoma and behaved in an aggressive manner, causing the rapid death of the patient.

TL;DR: In mice receiving [5-3H] cytidine or [2-14C] uridine iv 20 min before killing, the specific activities (SA) of both RNA and total free nucleotides increased to maximum values at 4 hr after 17β-estradiol administration of about ten times the respective control levels.
Abstract: The effects of 17β-estradiol on the incorporation of several pyrimidine nucleotide precursors into uterine RNA and free nucleotide pools have been investigated. Total RNA commenced increasing by 6 hr after administration of 0.05 μg 17β-estradiol, and was 60% above the control level at 10 hr. The size of the total free nucleotide pool did not change during the first 6 hr, then increased to 20% above the control level at 10 hr. In mice receiving [5-3H] cytidine or [2-14C] uridine iv 20 min before killing, the specific activities (SA) of both RNA and total free nucleotides increased to maximum values at 4 hr after 17β-estradiol administration of about ten times the respective control levels. However, in mice receiving iv injections of [5-3H] orotic acid, the SA of the total free nucleotides increased only slowly after giving 17β-estradiol, to 47% above the control level at 4 hr. The SA of RNA in the same mice increased promptly to a maximum at 2 hr of almost twice the control level. Estrogen stimulation incr...

TL;DR: The palmar patterns of several population samples from the authors' files representing the Caucasians, Negroes, Miconesians and New Guinean groups are evaluted in terms of the introduced calssification and the results demonstrate a number of differences between the major racial groups.
Abstract: A method for subtyping the interdigital patterns is introduced, which is based upon the direction of the main line terminations as well as the presence of accessory triradii. The palmar patterns of several population samples from our files representing the Caucasians, Negroes, Miconesians and New Guinean groups are evaluted in terms of the introduced calssification and the results demonstrate a number of differences between the major racial groups. In additin, the thenar/I and hypothenar patterns are subtyped according to the classifications of Cummins and Midlo. These data also indicate the inadequacy of the general open/arch, vestige, loop, whorl identification of the plamar patterns. It is hoped that more data will be studied along these lines for establishment of more accurate frequencies among the various racial groups.

TL;DR: This is a report of a case which demonstrates a singular combination of congenital anomalies with the early onset of hematologic manifestations and raises certain questions regarding variants of Fanconi's anemia.
Abstract: In the 44 years since Fanconi’s original description (2) in three male siblings, of a lethal familial anemia associated with microcephaly, brown skin pigmentation, hypogonadism, exaggerated reflexes and strabismus, over 150 cases have been added to the world literature. A broad range of embryonic developmental defects have been described in Fanconi’s anemia (4). This is a report of a case which demonstrates a singular combination of congenital anomalies with the early onset of hematologic manifestations and raises certain questions regarding variants of Fanconi’s anemia.

TL;DR: Phagocytic vacuoles in a given macrophage differed markedly; some contained abundant Prussian blue-reactive material and others contained periodic acid-Schiff reactive substance at the light microscope level, and ultrastructurally some were filled with ferritin particles and others were not.
Abstract: In a variety of tissues (lymph node and glandular stroma), mast cells have been found in close and often intimate association with macrophages containing numerous ferritin-like particles in their cytoplasm and within cytoplasmic vacuoles (siderosomes). Phagocytic vacuoles in a given macrophage differed markedly. Some contained abundant Prussian blue-reactive material and others contained periodic acid-Schiff reactive substance at the light microscope level, and ultrastructurally some were filled with ferritin particles and others were not. Ferritin-like particles have also been observed occasionally in the mast cells associated with macrophages and even within the matrix of some of the granules in these mast cells.

TL;DR: It seems that the T4 DNA polymerase is synthesized in vivo in a direction which corresponds to a counterclockwise reading of gene 43.
Abstract: Amber (am) mutants of the two closely linked sites, B22 and C125, in bacteriophage T4 gene 43 [deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polymerase] synthesize in the nonpermissive (su−) Escherichia coli host gene 43 products which are devoid of DNA polymerase activity, but which retain a 3′-exonuclease activity. Diethylaminoethyl-cellulose chromatographic analysis of DNA polymerase and deoxyribonuclease activities from extracts of su− cells infected with single- and double-am mutants of T4 gene 43 showed that the exonuclease activity which is observed with amB22 is not seen with double mutants carrying, in addition to amB22, am mutations which map to the clockwise side of the B22 site on the circular genetic map of T4. Similarly, am mutations which map to the clockwise side of the C125 site abolish the exonuclease activity which is observed with an am mutant (amE4335) of this site. It was concluded that in these double mutants termination signals to the clockwise side of amB22 and amE4335 are encountered before the amB22 and amE4335 signals during translation of the messenger ribonucleic acid from T4 gene 43. Thus, it seems that the T4 DNA polymerase is synthesized in vivo in a direction which corresponds to a counterclockwise reading of gene 43.

TL;DR: An efficient algorithm to formulate the system of node equations has been devised and successfully implemented on a digital computer and has been used to generate equations for various water distribution systems.
Abstract: Linear graph theory has been used to formulate a system of equations that describes the steady state flow of a water distribution system. An efficient algorithm to formulate the system of node equations has been devised and successfully implemented on a digital computer. This computer program has been used to generate equations for various water distribution systems. The system of equations was generated in such a form that minimal time is required for their evaluation in an iteration solution process. The form of the system of equations is such that different headloss-flow rate relationships of a pipe, in addition to the Hazen-Williams formula, can be used in the computer program.
