TL;DR: It was concluded that cytochrome P-450 was responsible for most of the peroxidase activity of liver microsomes and a mechanism for the microsomal peroxIDase activity is proposed in which LAHPO oxidizes the P- 450 thiol ligand to form high spin P-420.

TL;DR: Gut analyses of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis demonstrated that perennial phaeophytes, mostly fucoids and Alaria esculenta, were predominant in the diet, causing the dearth of non-coralline sublittoral algae in Newfoundland waters.
Abstract: Gut analyses of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Muller) demonstrated that perennial phaeophytes, mostly fucoids and Alaria esculenta, were predominant in the diet. Ephemeral species, coralline algae and animals, were consumed in smaller amounts when available. Grazing by the urchins is evidently responsible for the dearth of non-coralline sublittoral algae in Newfoundland waters. Lobsters, rock crabs, purple sea stars, other urchins, and a variety of fishes and birds feed on S. droebachiensis, but predation is apparently not effective in limiting the abundance of the urchin.

TL;DR: The disappearance of antibody in malignant melanoma is explained by a loss of recognizable antigenicity in the metastatic melanoma cells or antigenic modulation, inability of the patient to continue producing an immune response to the melanoma, and a production of a “blocking” substance causing inactivation of the tumour specific antibodies.
Abstract: SINCE the demonstration of immunity to animal tumours1 evidence has accumulated2 indicating tumour specific antigens and corresponding antibodies in human malignant disease2–10. In malignant melanoma, antibodies have been detected only in patients with early or localized tumours11,12. After progression from localized to disseminated melanoma, antibodies are not detected in the patient's sera11. Attempts have been made to explain this disappearance of antibody in terms of a loss of recognizable antigenicity in the metastatic melanoma cells or antigenic modulation13, inability of the patient to continue producing an immune response to the melanoma; a disseminated tumour acting as an antigen “sponge” soaking up all available antibody, and a production of a “blocking” substance causing inactivation of the tumour specific antibodies.

TL;DR: In this article, the adaptive rather than purposive nature of female infanticide among the Pelly Bay Eskimos is stressed. But it is not satisfactorily explained by recourse to environmental-demographic explanations, and it is argued that the explanation for the uniquely systematic Infanticide practiced by this group is to be sought within the social dynamic of the individual household.
Abstract: Systematic female infanticide among the Pelly Bay Eskimos is subjected to functional analysis wherein the adaptive rather than purposive nature of the behavior is stressed. The trait is seen to be ecologically adaptive insofar as it increases population, and in turn ecosystem, stability. It is argued that the explanation for the uniquely systematic infanticide practiced by this group is to be sought within the social dynamic of the individual household, and is not satisfactorily explained by recourse to environmental-demographic explanations.

Abstract: In the map area, the Conception Group and the overlying St. John9s Formation of the Cabot Group constitute a continuous, conformable succession of Precambrian sedimentary rocks about 8000 ft thick, beneath an overburden of glacial drift; the base of the sequence is unexposed. Varied rocks of the Conception Group are predominantly green and purple and the St. John9s shales are various shades of gray. The Conception Group is divisible into three lithologic units: Drook, Freshwater Point, and Cape Cove Formations, in order of decreasing age. The Drook Formation is composed mainly of chert, siliceous argillite, and siltstone; the Freshwater Point Formation is siliceous argillite with minor sandstone; and the Cape Cove Formation is composed of cyclic beds that grade from graywacke at the bottoms through siltstone to argillite at the tops. The Cape Cove Formation contains, in its upper part, imprints of soft-bodied coelenterates represented by polyps as well as Medusae. These constitute a newly described fauna, the environment of which can be inferred from the sediments that enclose them. During late Precambrian time, deposition of the Conception Group began in isolated basins that subsequently joined to form a shallow marine environment. The sea continued to deepen and became deepest during deposition of the middle part of the Cape Cove Formation. Turbidity currents played an important role in the deposition of the Conception Group and the St. John9s Formation, and reached a maximum during deposition of the Cape Cove Formation. After a substantial thickness of the Conception Group had been deposited, the sea became shallow again, perhaps during deposition of the uppermost part of the Cape Cove Formation, and remained shallow during post-Conception times. During deposition of the St. John9s Formation, the intensity of turbidity currents decreased. Also, mild volcanism, here reported for the first time, occurred during early St. John9s time.

TL;DR: Follow-up studies in the literature are reviewed and a number of cases of their own are added, where surgery is opposed for moral or professional ethical reasons, analysis of follow-up data on operated cases is irrelevant.
Abstract: Transsexualism has been clearly distinguished from homosexuality and transvestism (Benjamin (1953), Wainder (1968), Hoenig et al. (1964) and others) but though there are more than 700 cases reported in the world literature (Pauly (1965)), the aetiology of the condition is as baffling as ever. As in most areas of ignorance, there is no dearth of passionately held views on the subject, and as one’s notions of the aetiology will influence one’s views on treatment, the latter has often been a subject of heated controversy. (Mitscherlich (1950), Ostow (1953), Wiedeman (1953), Gutheil (1954), Meerlow (1967)). This is particularly so as regards hormone treatment and plastic surgery. The diversity of medical opinion concerning surgery for transsexual patients is evident from the replies to a questionnaire reported by Green et al. (1966). Where surgery is opposed for moral or professional ethical reasons, analysis of follow-up data on operated cases is irrelevant. However, where the issue is to be decided in terms of therapeutics, such data is most important. It is the best guide to future policy and procedure. In this paper we shall review follow-up studies in the literature and then add a number of cases of our own.

TL;DR: The samples of casamino acids were stored in a desiccator prior to preparation of the solutions which were analysed on a Beckman-Spinco automatic amino acid analyser, and the techniques used have been previously reported.
Abstract: An acid hydrolysate of casein, vitamin-free casamino acids (Difco), is commonly used as the amino acid source in early phases of nutrition work. Frequently, it is necessary to replace such a complex source with an equivalent, defined mixture of amino acids. This change in the medium often results in longer lag periods and reduced yields. The difference in yields can be the result of incomplete information on the composition of the complex source. The purposes of this paper are to present more complete data on the amino acid composition of and to briefly discuss other organic components of vitamin-free casamino acids (Difco). Amino acids.-A composite amino acid analysis obtained by using paper chromatography is currently available for casamino acids and is given in TABLE I, Column A (personal communication from Mr. V. R. Wheat, Technical Service, Difco; 7 Oct., 1970). The technique of Moore and Stein (1963) provides a more rapid and accurate means of determining the amino acids in a mixture. The samples of casamino acids were stored in a desiccator prior to preparation of the solutions which were analysed on a Beckman-Spinco automatic amino acid analyser (Model 121; Spinco Division, Beckman Instruments, Inc., Palo Alto, California). The techniques used have been previously reported (Nolan, 1970a.). The results of duplicate analyses of three lots of casamino acids are presented in TABLE I (Columns C, D, E). The accuracy of the data within each lot is -+ 5.1% or better. The values for ammonia, cysteic acid and tyrosine were not included in the accuracy calculations either because of susceptibility to external conditions or because the concentrations were too low.

Abstract: An Archaic Indian cemetery at Port au Choix, Newfoundland, dating from about 2000-1700 yrs B.C. is described. For the first time, excellent bone preservation allows a relatively complete reconstruction of the culture of the Archaic inhabitants of Newfoundland. Comparing the assemblage from Port au Choix with other Archaic assemblages from Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, especially the Moorehead or Maine Cemetery complex sites leads to the description of a "new" whole cultural tradition, the Maritime Archaic tradition, which existed throughout the Atlantic provinces and northern New England during the second millennium B.C. Abstract: Summary. Transfer of training was investigated in bright and dull subjects of the same mental age in two independent studies. A comparison among test-retest (T-T), practice-test (P-T) and test-practice-test (T-P-T) conditions revealed significant transfer in bright but not in dull subjects. Bright subjects also showed significantly higher transfer when given a pretest. The results are discussed in terms of their support of Ferguson's theory of human ability and in terms of their implications for intelligence testing and training procedures.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors generalize the idea of grouping the CP violation theories into two classes by Fishbach and Nieto and show that the stricter unitarity bound to |α| = |KL|KS| discussed by these authors can actually be chosen arbitrarily in a wide range of values subjected only to certain restrictions.
Abstract: We generalize the idea of grouping theCP violation theories into two classes by Fishbach and Nieto. We find that the so-called stricter unitarity bound to |α| = |〈KL|KS〉| discussed by these authors can actually be chosen arbitrarily in a wide range of values subjected only to certain restrictions. We also wish to point out that there always exists a lower bound to |α| which is either equal to zero or, in some cases, to a positive value known in terms of the partial decay rates of KL and KS. A discussion with reference to experimental data and the Wu-Yang triangle is again given for comparison.

Abstract: In this paper, a new form of general combined pulse modulation scheme incorporating the pulse frequency and the pulse width modulation laws is proposed. Three classes of combined pulse modulators of practical importance are defined and a non-linear discrete equivalence of a feedback system containing a general combined pulse modulator is obtained. A practical implementation of one form of the combined pulse modulator as well as a few experimental results of a feedback system containing the modulator are presented.

Abstract: A study is made of the spread which results from the discharge of a buoyant effluent at the free surface. Similitude is applied to develop functional equations for rate of spread, concentration, and shape, and experimental data are given for the rate of spread. Previously published data are used to demonstrate the validity of the other derived equations and to show how comprehensive mixing diagrams can be prepared by logical experimentation. Methods of choosing scales for hydraulic models are considered. Also shown is how the effect of viscous influence limits the available choice.

TL;DR: The clinic, instead of being viewed as merely a place for difficult and incurable patients, is now seen as a useful alternative in the treatment armamentarium of the outpatient department.
Abstract: This paper describes an outpatient clinic where many of the patients are chronic attenders who resist all attempts at discharge. Their dependency needs and the difficulty of one-to-one treatment are outlined. On the one hand there is the almost insatiable demand for magical medications, and on the other the frustration of the therapists trying to deal with this situation. To circumvent these difficulties, the concept of institutional transference was fostered by a policy of disengagement. As a result a flexible therapeutic set up was evolved allowing for the fulfillment of dependency needs and the maintenance of satisfactory morale, not only among the patients but also among the entire treatment staff. The clinic, instead of being viewed as merely a place for difficult and incurable patients, is now seen as a useful alternative in the treatment armamentarium of the outpatient department.
