Abstract: Nondestructive thermal examination can uncover the presence of defects via
temperature distribution profile anomalies that are created on the surface as
a result of a defect. There are many factors that affect the temperature
distribution map of the surface being tested by Infrared Thermography.
Internal defect properties such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity and
defect depth, play an important role in the temperature behavior of the
pixels or regions being analyzed. Also, it is well known that other external
factors such as the convection heat transfer, variations on the surface
emissivity and ambient radiation reflectivity can affect the thermographic
signal received by the infrared camera. In this paper we considered a simple
structure in the form of flat plate covered with several defects, whose
surface we heated with a uniform heat flux impulse. We conducted a
theoretical analysis and experimental test of the method for case of defects
on an aluminum surface. First, experiments were conducted on surfaces with
intentionally created defects in order to determine conditions and boundaries
for application of the method. Experimental testing of the pulsed flash
thermography (PFT) method was performed on simulated defects on an aluminum
test plate filled with air and organic compound n-hexadecane, hydrocarbon
that belongs to the Phase Change Materials (PCMs). Study results indicate
that it is possible, using the PFT method, to detect the type of material
inside defect holes, whose presence disturbs the homogeneous structure of
aluminum.

Abstract: We report the results of five Ne I line shapes study in an abnormal Grimm-type glow discharge operating in neon. The spectral lines were observed along the axis of a cylindrical glow discharge parallel (side-on) and perpendicular (end-on) to the cathode surface. The side-on spectra showed a spectral line shift and sometimes a simultaneous shift and split in the cathode fall region of the glow discharge. The results of the measured line shift with the available data for the dc Stark effect were used to estimate the electric field strength in the cathode fall region of the glow discharge. The end-on recorded line profiles showed up to 30% larger half-widths than the side-on recorded line profiles from the negative glow. This effect is a result of the superposition of line emission in the cathode fall region under the influence of the dc Stark effect on the line profile from the negative glow. In addition, wavy features at the far wing in the direction of dc Stark shift were detected. All observed phenomena related to end-on line shapes in Grimm discharge were related quantitatively to the dc Stark effect in the cathode fall region and plasma line broadening in the negative glow region.

Abstract: The Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is being investigated as an alternate power source for various applications as transportation and emergency power supplies. Fuel cell systems are characterized by high costs and complex auxiliary devices. For this reason, a fuel cell emulator can be used as a suitable and economic alternative to a real one for developing and testing a fuel cell power conditioning system. The fuel cell emulator must be able to reproduce the FC nonlinear output voltage-current characteristic. This paper proposes then a possible solution to emulate a PEMFC system by using a DC-DC converter. The fuel cell system, including all its auxiliaries and related control systems, is emulated by a full-bridge converter experimentally achieved and controlled in the DSP2812 environment. The converter-based system allows the behavior of any fuel cell to be easily emulated and can be used in laboratory as a low-cost system for design and experimental purposes since only a DC-DC control modification is necessary.

Abstract: Introduction [corrected] PSA is the most important tumor marker in all solid tumor, indispensable in the management of prostate cancer. Screening for prostate cancer is still not recomended, although performed in many countries, which introduced questions about the usefulnes of PSA in detection of prostate cancer. The PSA treshold has also been changed, the value of PSA derivatives revised. Whether such changes are applicable in non scrrened population is questionable. Aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of PSA, free/ total PSA and PSA density in our non screened population. Patients and methods TRUS guided prostate biopsy was performed in 579 patients. The number of cores was 6-12. Mean age of the patients was 67.5 years (30-90). PSA was ranging from 0.41 to 2250 (mean 38.6 ng/ml, median: 11.95, SD 140,45). Digitorectal examination was considered positive in 351 patients. Free PSA was measured in 352 patients with the index ranging from 0.02 to 0.88 (mean free/total PSA: 0.14, median: 0.13). The volume of the prostate was measured in all patients according the prostate ellipsoid model, and PSA density calculated according to the formula PSA/PV. Patients were stratified in 6 groups according to PSA value (I: PSA ng/ml, II: PSA 2.5-4, III: PSA 4-10, IV: PSA 10-20, V: PSA: 20 to 50, Group 6: PSA 50). Results Non homogenicity of the patients can be seen through the wide range of PSA which was from 0.4 to 2025). Prostate cancer was diagnosed in 233 pts (40.2%). As expected, the probability of detecting cancer was raised with PSA (p), and was extremely rare in pts with PSA below 4 ng/ml. PSA, free/total PSA, volume of the prostate and PSA density were significantly different according to the presence of cancer. Most of our patients had PSA between 4 and 20 ng/ml. Predictive value of PSA was 20.6% for pts with PSA from 4 to 10 and 32.7% for those with PSA from 10 to 20 ng/ml. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values for different cut off's of PSA (4, 10 and 20) was performed. The best results were obtained for PSA cut off of 10 ng/ml. In the group of patient with PSA, PSA density more reliable than free/total PSA index. Conclusion PSA is still valuable marker for detection of prostate cancer in our non screened population. According to our results PSA treshold should not be lowered below 4 ng/ml. PSA density is a reliable PSA derivative, free/total PSA index having less importance in pts with PSA below 20 ng/ml.
