TL;DR: Observations provide evidence for a comet shower triggered by an impulsive perturbation of the Oort cloud, indicating that the abundance of Earth-crossing objects and dustiness in the inner solar system were simultaneously but only briefly enhanced.
Abstract: Analyses of pelagic limestones indicate that the flux of extraterrestrial helium-3 to Earth was increased for a 2.5-million year (My) period in the late Eocene. The enhancement began ∼1 My before and ended ∼1.5 My after the major impact events that produced the large Popigai and Chesapeake Bay craters ∼36 million years ago. The correlation between increased concentrations of helium-3, a tracer of fine-grained interplanetary dust, and large impacts indicates that the abundance of Earth-crossing objects and dustiness in the inner solar system were simultaneously but only briefly enhanced. These observations provide evidence for a comet shower triggered by an impulsive perturbation of the Oort cloud.

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental program was carried out to investigate the role of passivation time in controlling the progressive process of crack tip oxidation in alloy 718 at 650°C by testing the influence of oxide buil-up during hold time at minimum load and the effect of a minor high frequency cycle imposed on the hold time period.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the intergranular crack tip oxidation mechanism in alloy 718 at elevated temperatures. The basic concept is based on the ability of the oxygen partial pressure to control the preferential formation of oxide layers at the crack tip. The time required to complete the build-up of the protective oxide type at the metal-oxide interface is considered a measure of the limits of the oxidation process. Identification by transmission electron microscopy of oxide scale formed along fracture surfaces during a low frequency fatigue crack process in alloy 718 at 650°C supports the proposed model concepts. An experimental program was carried out to investigate the role of passivation time in controlling the progressive process of crack tip oxidation. This was achieved by testing the influence of oxide buil-up during hold time at minimum load, as well as the effect of a minor high frequency cycle imposed on the hold time period. It was established that an increase in fatigue crack growth rate accompanies the increase in passivation time period. These results were interpreted on the basis of the oxidation formation concepts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the experimental data were generated using a reliable isochoric technique and compared with some selected experimental data from the literature and the agreements were generally found acceptable, which is a guarantee for the reliability of our experimental technique and the data generated here.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two phase oxide fibres composed of α-alumina and mullite are used for the reinforcement of ceramic matrices for use at very high temperatures.
Abstract: Two families of small diameter ceramic fibres exist. The oxide fibres, based on alumina and silica, which were initially produced as refractory insulation have also found use as reinforcements for light metal alloys. The production of SiC based fibres made possible the development of ceramic matrix composites. Improved understanding of the mechanisms which control the high temperature behaviour of these latter fibres has led to their evolution towards a near stoichiometric composition which results in strength retention at higher temperatures and lower creep rates. The SiC fibres will however be ultimately limited by oxidation so that there is an increasing interest in complex two phase oxide fibres composed of α-alumina and mullite as candidates for the reinforcement of ceramic matrices for use at very high temperatures. These fibres show low creep rates, comparable to the SiC based fibres but are revealed to be sensitive to alkaline contamination.
