Abstract: We report the generation and observation of coherent temporal oscillations between the macroscopic quantum states of a Josephson tunnel junction by applying microwaves with frequencies close to the level separation. Coherent temporal oscillations of excited state populations were observed by monitoring the junction's tunneling probability as a function of time. From the data, the lower limit of phase decoherence time was estimated to be about 5 microseconds.

Abstract: In millimeter-wave indoor communications systems, the radiation patterns and polarizations of the antennas at base stations and remote terminals have a significant influence on channel characteristics. The work reported in this paper investigated the effects of the radiation patterns of the antennas at remote terminals on multipath propagation characteristics. These effects were investigated by indoor propagation measurements at 60 GHz conducted in a modern office room and by ray-tracing simulations based on geometrical optics. Multipath channel characteristics are compared in terms of impulse responses and their root-mean-square (rms) delay spreads for an omnidirectional antenna and for three directive antennas with different beam widths. From the results of measurements and ray-tracing simulations, the use of a directive antenna at the remote terminal is demonstrated to be an effective method of reducing the effects of multipath propagation. Further reduction in the multipath effects is found to be achieved by the use of circular polarization instead of linear polarization with the directive antennas.

Abstract: A photonic label switching router (PLSR) of which the photonic label processing is based upon optical code correlation, is investigated. To resolve the electronic router's bottleneck in current Internet protocol (IP) over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks, we will envision IP over photonic networks in which the PLSRs totally replace the electronic routers. The architectures of PLSR including the photonic label processing, the photonic label swapping, and the optical switching and their optical implementations are studied. Results of proof-of-concept experiments for the photonic label processing and photonic label swapping will confirm the feasibility to attain the target performance: the throughput of 100 Tb/s at least, the processing speed around 10 Gpacket/s, and the number of label entries up to 10 k.

Abstract: This paper proposes a time-division multiple-access/time-division duplex (TDMA/TDD)-based symbol rate and modulation level-controlled adaptive modulation system for high-bit-rate data transmission. The proposed system controls both the symbol rate and modulation level for the next transmission time slot according to the estimated carrier power to noise spectral density ratio (C/N/sub 0/) and delay spread for the time slot to achieve higher bit rate and higher transmission quality as well as higher delay-spread immunity. It is demonstrated by computer simulation and laboratory experiments that the proposed system can achieve a higher average bit rate with higher transmission quality in comparison with the fixed-rate quaternary phase-shift keying (QPSK) system and modulation level-controlled adaptive modulation system in both flat Rayleigh and frequency-selective fading environments. The simulated and experimental results also show that the proposed adaptive modulation techniques can be applied to 1-2-Mb/s indoor and outdoor microcellular systems with its delay spread of up to 250 ns and its terminal mobility of up to pedestrian speed without employing any special antifrequency-selective fading techniques, such as the adaptive equalizer and space diversity.
