TL;DR: In this article, 16 compounds of the general structure {HON: CH.C(5)H(4)N(+]).CH(2)](n).R(+)}2Br(-) have been synthesized in which the position of the oxime group in the pyridine ring, the second charged group R(+) and the number of methylene groups between the charged atoms have been varied.
Abstract: Sixteen compounds of the general structure {HON: CH.C(5)H(4)N(+).[CH(2)](n).R(+)}2Br(-) have been synthesized in which the position of the oxime group in the pyridine ring, the second charged group R(+) and the number of methylene groups between the charged atoms have been varied. The rate at which these compounds reactivate cholinesterase inhibited by ethyl pyrophosphate has been studied and a number have been found which are more active than 2-hydroxyiminomethyl-N-methylpyridinium methanesulphonate. Since considerable variation in structure was found among those compounds which are better reactivators than the latter, the concept that 2-hydroxyiminomethyl-N-methylpyridinium salts are unique in their ability to fit the surface of the inhibited enzyme is no longer tenable. The reactivating power of these oximes correlated well with their ability, when given in conjunction with atropine, to save the lives of mice poisoned by ethyl pyrophosphate. The most effective compounds, NN'-trimethylenebis-(4-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium bromide) and NN'-hexamethylenebis(2-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium bromide), contained a further oxime group in R(+), but the second oxime group was not essential for high activity. These new oximes were also superior in saving the lives of mice poisoned with sarin (isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate), but the improvement was not as dramatic as when the mice were poisoned with ethyl pyrophosphate. The toxicity of the compounds varied with both n and R(+) and was unrelated to the therapeutic potency.

TL;DR: In this paper, the thickness, composition and wear resistance of iron, manganese and zinc phosphates formed on steel by representative industrial immersion processes are compared, with special reference to their value in the prevention of rasting.
Abstract: Coatings of iron, manganese and zinc phosphates formed on steel by representative industrial immersion processes are compared, with special reference to their value in the prevention of rasting. The results are examined in the light of the thickness, composition and wear resistance of the coatings. Protective properties are relatively well developed in manganese phosphate coatings, but, since phosphating in practice normally constitutes only a part of a protective system involving organic coatings, iron and zinc phosphates can give adequate results in appropriate systems. A recent spot-test of Russian origin, although at present not sufficiently well developed for inspection purposes, is likely to provide a useful additional tool for examining coatings. Variations in the coatings, in particular those that occur in the working range of a plain manganese phosphate process, have been examined and one untoward effect was identified, that due to adventitious copper contamination of the bath.

TL;DR: The purpose of the spine pad was so closely linked with the development of ideas concerning body heat, fever and sunstroke, that one must be prepared to explore many early lines of thought for an understanding of its origin and its demise.
Abstract: THE spine pad has become a dull museum piece, and it is probable that specimens are nowadays not easy to find. Yet to those living in tropical areas during the early part of the century and to those serving with the British Army in hot climates during the First World War, memories may be evoked of a piece of cloth of cotton, silk or wool, plain or quilted, several inches wide, attachable to the shirt or coat along the spine, and sometimes with a coloured lining. It is now difficult to accept that this mere piece of cloth could in any way protect from the effects of the sun. But the purpose of the spine pad was so closely linked with the development of ideas concerning body heat,_ fever and sunstroke, that one must be prepared to explore many early lines of thought for an understanding of its origin and its demise.

TL;DR: The use of mono-functional ion exchange resins with strongly acidic or basic groups provides an extremely simple and rapid technique for the determination of the ionic charge of an anion or cation in aqueous solution as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: THE use of mono-functional ion-exchange resins with strongly acidic or basic groups provides an extremely simple and rapid technique for the determination of the ionic charge of an anion or cation in aqueous solution The method has the further advantage of being applicable to solutions containing only very small concentrations of the unknown ion

TL;DR: Analysis of the results showed that both number of errors and mean duration of errors increased significantly in consecutive half-hour periods, and that there were large individual differences in performance.
Abstract: Two basic activities are involved in radar operating, watchkeeping and target tracking. Deterioration of watchkeeping performance has been explained by a hypothesis which relates absence of sensory variation and failure to attend to one part of the display continuously (Broadbent, 1951). This paper describes a preliminary experiment to examine deterioration on a simple compensatory tracking task. Twenty-one subjects were each tested for an uninterrupted period of two hours. They were required to keep a target correctly aligned by cranking a handwheel at a constant speed, and it was expected that failures to attend to the display would result in target deviations. Analysis of the results showed that both number of errors and mean duration of errors increased significantly in consecutive half-hour periods, and that there were large individual differences in performance.
