TL;DR: Using a dye technique, the distribution of sugar, oil, and protein food sources among the colony of Solenopsis saevissima richteri Ford was studied and larvae received the greatest percentage of the oil.
Abstract: Using a dye technique, the distribution of sugar, oil, and protein food sources among the colony of Solenopsis saevissima richteri Ford was studied. The protein was primarily distributed to larvae. The sugar was distributed to the various castes more uniformly than the oil. Larvae received a greater proportion of Sugar than the other castes. Males contained a larger percentage of sugar than workers in 24 hours but had less than workers based on body weight. Some dye and sugar was found to be regurgitated by the workers when feel sugar, thus reducing the sugar available to the colony. All castes received more oil than sugar or protein. Larvae received the greatest percentage of the oil. Males received only a small maintenance amount.

Abstract: A substance which the parasite Cardiochiles nigriceps Viereck utilizes in locating its host apparently is produced in the mandibular glands of Heliothis virescens (F.). This material is secreted by the host primarily during feeding, and on contact with it the parasite is stimulated to begin directed searching movements for its host.

TL;DR: Studies were conducted during 1964 and 1965 in the Delta area of Mississippi to determine effects of various insecticides on predator populations subjected to 2 pest-control programs: a season-long complete chemical control program with insecticide applications on an automatic 7-day schedule and a program with early- and late-season applications applied as needed to control cotton pests.
Abstract: Studies were conducted during 1964 and 1965 in the Delta area of Mississippi to determine effects of various insecticides on predator populations subjected to 2 pest-control programs: a season-long complete chemical control program with insecticide applications on an automatic 7-day schedule and a program with early- and late-season applications applied as needed to control cotton pests. Predators that occurred in greatest abundance were recorded. Lady beetles, Nabis and Geocoris species were the dominant predators in early season and spiders, 90% of which were the striped lynx, Oxyopes salticua Hentz, became dominant in mid- and late-season. Predators could tolerate low-dosage early-season applications in the complete chemical control program, but populations were decidely reduced after 2 insecticide applications to control plant bugs. Toxaphene was more toxic to Nabis species and spiders than the other materials used. All predators were much more affected by the mixture of toxaphene and DDT than by toxaphene alone. Spiders were able to withstand phosphate and carbamate materials much better than chlorinated hydrocarbons, with the exception of azinphosmethyl, which appeared to affect them more than endrin. Nabis species were affected less by azinphosmethyl than by the other materials used. Azodrin® (3-hydroxy- N -methyl-cis-crotonamide dimethyl phosphate) and Bidrin® (3-hydroxy- N,N -dimethyl-ciscroton amide dimethyl phosphate) were more toxic to predaceous species than trichlorfon and phosphamidon in the program with applications applied as needed. Applications of all insecticides at the mid- and late-season rates almost completely eliminated the predators. Cotton-pest species were adequately controlled with both programs and predaceous insects were conserved by applying insecticides only as needed to control pest species.

TL;DR: Feeding antibiotics to chemically bursectomized (CB) birds has demonstrated that immunological incompetence in CB birds is a direct result of embryonic bursectomy and not secondary to growth rate or factors that increase mortality.
Abstract: SummaryFeeding antibiotics to chemically bursectomized (CB) birds has demonstrated that immunological incompetence in CB birds is a direct result of embryonic bursectomy and not secondary to growth rate or factors that increase mortality. Mature CB birds appear to produce normal amounts of agglutinin to sheep red blood cells, but are still deficient precipitin producers. Apparently, the chicken is capable of adapting immunologically to the altered internal environment produced by embryonic bursectomy.

Abstract: A general formulation is presented which treats with accuracy the perfectly conducting antenna, the uniformly resistive antenna, the tapered resistive antenna, and the multiple impedance loaded antenna. The current distribution is obtained in analytic form that is easily used to obtain the effective length and radiated field. The presented theory has application in traveling-wave antenna design. Traveling-wave antennas are of interest for broadband and directional communication. Extensive numerical results are obtained, and comparisons are made with experimental data. The results indicate the feasibility of cylindrical traveling-wave antennas.

Abstract: Selected trees were intensively examined for within-tree differences of xylem elements and their organization; i.e. elements were examined from the base of the tree to the top and from the pith to the bark. The within-tree variation patterns of fiber length, vessel volume, and ray volume are reported and the interrelationship of these properties, as well as their correlation with age, growth rate, and specific gravity, are presented.

Abstract: There are at least 3 generations of the black-faced leafhopper, Graminella nigrifrons (Forbes), in Mississippi. These generations, represented by peaks of adult activity, may be referred to as the spring, summer, and fall generations. High populations of this vector of corn stunt virus in April in the northern portion of the State occur about the time of spring corn planting. Although leafhopper infectivity is low (less than 1% of the natural population) the large first generation is most destructive to young corn. The second generation of leafhoppers is of lesser concern because the crop is older when exposed. G. nigrifrons survives through the winter as both adults and eggs on winter grasses, grain, and grazing crops. Adult leafhoppers actively lay fertile eggs in warm periods during the winter; thus there is no apparent diapause.

Abstract: Summary RELATIVE PREDICTABILITY OF FIVE INDICES OF ADOPTION OF RECOMMENDED FARM PRACTICES: The central concern of this study was to compare five indices of adoption of recommended farm practices in terms of their capacities to predict variations in variables theoretically expected and empirically established to be related to adoption. Of the five indices of adoption, three were conventional indices widely used by rural sociologists in measuring the adoption behaviour of farmers. The first index was comparatively crude - the per cent of applicable practices adopted. The other was an improvement over the first in that the years of use of the adopted applicable practices were taken into consideration. The third index involved a categorization of farmers into five groups in terms of the degree to which each of them was relatively earlier to adopt new ideas than other members of his social system. Besides these three indices, two adoption scales were constructed with the use of trace line analysis and Guttman's scalogram analysis, respectively. The predictive utility of each of these five indices was measured by computing Gutman's coefficient of predictive utility for each of the twenty-one variables known to be related to measures of adoption.

Abstract: A variant ofCandida albicans, believed to be a transformant, was obtained in the presence of a preparation containing nucleic acids and proteins ofMycobacterium tuberculosis. The transformant produced small, oval cells and small colonies and differed biochemically and serologically from the parental strain. The transformant proved to be non-virulent but able to confer anti-mycobacterial immunity in guinea pigs.

TL;DR: Side-dress applications of Furadan and Baygon 5 weeks after planting increased the efficiency of these materials to a higher level of leafhopper control and side-dressing with Bagron and disulfoton reduced disease incidence; however these 2 materials were in general less effective than Furadan.
Abstract: Three soil systemic insecticides, Baygon® (o -isopropoxphenyl methylcarbamate), disulfoton, and Furadan® (Niagara 10242) (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methylcarbamate), were tested in 1967 for their efficacy against Graminella nigriforons (Forbes), vector of com stunt virus. Experimental plots (0.25 acre) in 3 replications of a randomized complete block design were treated with insecticide as in-furrow applications only or as in-furrow plus side-dress applications at 1 lb/acre 5 weeks after planting. Significantly fewer leafhoppers were collected in Furadan treatment plots and in the Baygon furrow plus side-dress treatment than in the other treatments, Vector control was reflected in disease incidence data; those treatment plots with smaller leafhopper populations had fewer diseased plants than plots harboring larger vector populations. Side-dress applications of Furadan and Baygon 5 weeks after planting increased the efficiency of these materials to a higher level of leafhopper control. Furadan plots receiving a supplemental side-dress application did not have a lower incidence of disease compared with plots treated with this insecticide in-furrow only. Side-dressing with Bagron and disulfoton reduced disease incidence; however these 2 materials were in general less effective than Furadan.

TL;DR: In an experiment designed to study the effect of vitamin A in combination with thyroxine or thiouracil on the utilization of carotenoids, a similarity of their effects between high vitamin A and thaviouracil was evident.
Abstract: SummaryForms of vitamin A having alcoholic, aldehydic, or acidic terminal functional groups, when fed at 100,000 IU of vitamin A/kg of diet, depressed carotenoid utilization. The retinoic acid caused the decrease in the carotenoid content of serum, liver, and skin to a greater extent than other forms of vitamin A. In an experiment designed to study the effect of vitamin A in combination with thyroxine or thiouracil on the utilization of carotenoids, a similarity of their effects between high vitamin A and thiouracil was evident.

Abstract: A passive network that will compensate for dielectric ab sorption in the feedback capacitor of analog integrators is developed and its limitations are given. A modified net work that relaxes some of the restrictions encountered in the first network is developed. Dielectric absorption in the compensating capacitors is shown to be negligible. It is suggested that the performance of the integrators of an existing analog computer can be improved by the addition of a passive input network. It is also suggested that com puting capacitors other than polystyrene would give good results when compensated for dielectric absorption by the technique developed. A bibliography is included to give an information source on other compensation techniques and on methods of determining the constants for the fixed-parameter capacitor model.

TL;DR: An ultra-low-volume (ULV) and a water-diluted emulsifiable concentrated (EC) formulation of malathion picked up by larvae of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens, from treated cotton leaves and the amount penetrating into larvae were compared.
Abstract: The amount of an ultra-low-volume (ULV) and a water-diluted emulsifiable concentrated (EC) formulation of malathion picked up by larvae of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), from treated cotton leaves and the amount penetrating into larvae were compared. Dead larvae on ULV treated leaves contained a greater amount of malathion than larvae from EC treated leaves. The ULV droplet remained in a liquid form on the leaf while the EC dried and was less readily obtained by larvae crawling on the surface of leaves. Malathion EC rapidly disappeared from the surface of topically treated larvae both by evaporation and absorption of the dose by the cuticle and thus did not reach the site of action. A greater total amount of malathion was present internally in ULV. than EC topically treated larvae.
