TL;DR: In this paper, a field concept of social organization is proposed as an alternative to systems theory with special reference to the case of the community, and theoretical and methodological implications of conceptualizing the community as a social field are discussed.
Abstract: A field concept of social organization is proposed as an alternative to systems theory with special reference to the case of the community. Field notions in physics, biology, and psychology are shown to reflect a view of reality as emergent and dynamic. The concept of the field is distinguished from the method of field analysis. The assumptions of interactional theory are taken as a frame of reference for delineating characteristics of the social field. Contributions of ecological, cultural, and psychological factors are noted, but the social field is described as having a distinctive existence. Theoretical and methodological implications of conceptualizing the community as a social field are discussed, and the concept of the community field is elaborated.

Abstract: Celestial orientation and setting of the biological clock in the southern cricket frog Acris gryllus can be cued by light stimuli received by extraoptic receptors in the brain. These extraoptic photoreceptors may also be used in learning new orientational directions. A mechanism for a light-activated biological clock is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of mechanical vibrations on convective heat transfer in an enclosure of rectangular cross-section was investigated experimentally and the results showed that vibration of a thermally active enclosure can have a significant effect on its heat transfer characteristics especially near the resonant natural frequency of the column of fluid contained within the enclosure.
Abstract: The effect of mechanical vibrations on natural convective heat transfer in an enclosure of rectangular cross-section was investigated experimentally. The enclosure was comprised of two vertical and opposed surfaces which were maintained at different temperatures, surrounded by four other adiabatic surfaces. Vibration stresses were applied to this heat transfer cell by mounting it vertically on the armature of an electrodynamic vibrator. Frequencies from 0 to 4000 Hertz and accelerations from 0 to 110 g’s were utilized in the investigation. The results show that vibration of a thermally active enclosure can have a significant effect on its heat transfer characteristics especially near the resonant natural frequency of the column of fluid contained within the enclosure. Increases in convective heat transfer coefficients of as much as 50 percent were obtained during this investigation. A correlation equation was developed by utilizing the dynamic response characteristics of the fluid column when considered as a seismic mass.

TL;DR: Two varieties of the imported fire ant were similar in their preferences for melezitose, sucrose, and dextrose and in their rejection of xylose, ribose, mannose and galactose.
Abstract: Studies were carried out to determine the preference of two varieties of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis saevissima richleri Forel, and Solenopsis saevissima saevissima Smith, for various common insects as food, using whole and crushed insects as well as ether and water extractions. In addition, several sugars, amino acids, and B vitamins were tested for acceptability. A wide assortment of insect species tested were readily accepted: however, several species were consistently rejected by the ants. In general, the acceptance of amino acids by the ants was equal to or less than water for both ant varieties. Leucine, however, was found to be several fold more attractive than water and as acceptable as the best sugars. Both varieties were similar in their preferences for melezitose, sucrose, and dextrose (in all cases considerably higher than the water standard) and in their rejection of xylose, ribose, mannose. arabinose, and galactose. Folic acid, B 12 , and Inositol were accepted to a greater extent than the water standard, but none of the B vitamins tested were as attractive as the more acceptable sugars or amino acids.

TL;DR: In this article, the current distribution on the wires was obtained by solving numerically a system of integral equations, and the scattered fields and backscattering cross sections were obtained using standard techniques.
Abstract: The electromagnetic scattering from two straight wires, which intersect perpendicularly, is considered. First, the current distribution on the wires is obtained by solving numerically a system of integral equations. Then the scattered fields and backscattering cross sections are obtained using standard techniques.

TL;DR: In this article, a hypothesis was tested that increased "fate control" will lead to increased compliance, and significant compliance was observed in the 'fate' control' group only, while control Ss who told no lie were included in the design.
Abstract: A hypothesis was tested that increased “fate control” will lead to increased compliance. Fate control was manipulated by inducing S to tell a lie about information he had received and then make use of the information. Other Ss were induced to lie but could not make use of the information. Control Ss who told no lie were included in the design. Significant compliance was observed in the “fate control” group only.

TL;DR: The authors investigated the relationship be tween the extent of education by adults and their attitudes toward continuing education and found a positive correlation between the level of education of the participants and their extent of their educative behavior at.05 level of signifiance.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship be tween the extent of educative behavior by adults and their attitudes toward continuing education. Ninety-eight randomly selected em ployees of the Florida Power Corporation responded to the Leisure Activity Survey which measured educative behavior and to a form of the semantic differential which was designed to measure atti tudes toward continuing education. A positive correlation was found between the level of education of the participants and the extent of their educative behavior at the .05 level of signifiance. No significant relationship was found between attitudes toward continuing education and extent of educative behavior.

TL;DR: In this article, the mutual and self-admittance of two monopoles having different lengths and radii are obtained for an array consisting of two coaxial cables having different inner conductors.
Abstract: Accurate numerical values of mutual and self-admittances are obtained for an array consisting of two monopoles having different lengths and radii. The monopoles are actually protrusions of the inner conductors of coaxial cables. The sheaths of the cables are connected to a perfectly conducting ground screen. Restrictions in the theory are the following: the monopoles must be thin, a/\lambda \ll 1 where a is the radius and \lambda the wavelength, b where b is the radius of the coaxial cable sheath, and d > 10a where d is the separation of the monopoles. The procedure employed to obtain the mutual and self-admittances is to derive simultaneous integral equations for the current distributions and to solve the integral equations numerically. The results are given for the most part in graphical form. Comparisons are made with existing theory and with experimental data. Excellent agreement in all cases is observed.

TL;DR: Research was initiated in the fall of 1967 to determine the role of birds in reducing overwintering populations of Diatraea grandiosella Dyar in Mississippi and the Yellow-Shafted Flicker, Colaptes auratus (L.), was the only bird observed removing overwintered larvae from the base of undisturbed corn stalks.
Abstract: Research was initiated in the fall of 1967 to determine the role of birds in reducing overwintering populations of Diatraea grandiosella Dyar in Mississippi. The Yellow-Shafted Flicker, Colaptes auratus (L.), was the only bird observed removing overwintering larvae from the base of undisturbed corn stalks. Yellow-Shafted Flicker predation occurred from October to March. January, the coldest month of the winters, was the month of heaviest predation. These birds removed 64.0% of the overwintering larvae during the winter of 1967–68 and 81.8% during the winter of 1968â–69 from the study fields. Evidence of bird predation was observed in all fields examined in the spring surveys of 1968 and 1969. An average of 54.4% of the stalks in all fields was infested with overwintering larvae, and an average of 63.7% of these larvae was removed by the Yellow-Shafted Flicker.

TL;DR: In 24-hr bioassays, fresh-water shrimp from 3 areas of intensive pesticide use in the Mississippi delta were 1 to 25 times more resistant to 7 organochlorine, 3 organophosphorus, and 1 carbamate insecticides than shrimp from Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge.
Abstract: In 24-hr bioassays, fresh-water shrimp, Palaemonetes kadiakensis, from 3 areas of intensive pesticide use in the Mississippi delta were 1 to 25 times more resistant to 7 organochlorine, 3 organophosphorus, and 1 carbamate insecticides than shrimp from Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge (Bluff Lake). Although populations differed in amount of resistance, the relative toxicity of the insecticides was similar. Toxicity of the insecticides, ranked in descending order, was as follows: Most toxic, endrin, DDT, methyl parathion, parathion; medium toxicity, Guthion, lindane, toxaphene, Strobane; least toxic, chlordane, Sevin, and heptachlor. When caged in a canal near cotton fields, susceptible shrimp suffered 66% more mortality than did native, resistant shrimp.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that the PRESTRESS LOSS and CAMBER of the BRIDGE BEAMS, made of NORMAL WEIGHT and LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE beams, achieved the highest performance with 100 days to 150 days after their introduction.
Abstract: PRESTRESS LOSS AND CAMBER OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS WERE FOUND TO GROW WITH TIME AT A DECREASING RATE PROVIDED NO DEAD OR LIVE LOAD WAS APPLIED TO RELIEVE THE BEAM FROM THE ECCENTRIC PRESTRESSING FORCE. NINETEEN FULL-SIZE BRIDGE BEAMS MADE OF NORMAL WEIGHT AND LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE WERE STUDIED. SIMPLE HYPERBOLIC FUNCTIONS TO PREDICT THE TIME-DEPENDENT PRESTRESS LOSS AND CAMBER WERE DEVELOPED. PREDICTED RESULTS BY THIS METHOD AND THE RATE OF CREEP METHOD WERE COMPARED WITH MEASURED VALUES. COMPARISONS BETWEEN PREDICTED AND MEASURED RESULTS OF TESTS REPORTED BY OTHERS WERE ALSO MADE. IT WAS FOUND THAT: (1) THE PRESTRESS LOSS AND CAMBER OF THE BRIDGE BEAMS, STORED IN THE OPEN AIR IN HOUSTON, TEXAS, ATTAINED THEIR ULTIMATE VALUES WITHIN 100 DAYS TO 150 DAYS AFTER PRESTRESSING, AND (2) PREDICTED VALUES BY BOTH METHODS WERE IN CLOSE OVERALL AGREEMENT WITH MEASURED VALUES. /ASCE/

TL;DR: In this article, an accurate numerical representation of the electromagnetic field in the near zone of a cylindrical monopole oriented perpendicular to a highly conducting ground screen and driven at its base is needed for use in calibrating field strength measuring equipment.
Abstract: An accurate numerical representation of the electromagnetic field in the near zone of a cylindrical monopole oriented perpendicular to a highly conducting ground screen and driven at its base is needed for use in calibrating field strength measuring equipment. The fields H?(p,z), Ep(p,z), and Ez(p,z) are given by different integrals. The integrands are formed by multiplying the current distribution Iz(z) by certain derivations of K(p, z ? z') = e-jsR/R taken by hand, where s is the radian wavenumber and \begin{equation*}R = \sqrt{(z - z^\prime)^2 + p^2}.\end{equation*}. Alternatively, the integrands may be constructed by multiplying K(p,z - z') by certain derivatives of Iz(z). The current Iz(z) is obtained by solving an integral equation with feedpoint correction employing a linear zoning technique. Generally speaking for a tubular monopole, the current may be obtained to any desired accuracy, and, of course, it is bounded at the driving point. The integrands are then formed, and the resulting integral expressions for the fields are evaluated using a digital computer. By this means it is felt that accurate numerical values of the fields H?(p,z), Ep(p,z), and Ez(p,z) in the vicinity of the monopole are found, excluding observation points near the feedpoint and end of the radiator. A brief discussion of the methodology employed in programming the Chang theory is presented.

TL;DR: The relationship of Dalbulus maidis, vector numbers, and corn plant age at inoculation with the corn stunt disease agent (CSA) to disease severity were investigated in a field cage and greenhouse.
Abstract: The relationship of Dalbulus maidis (Delong & Walcott), vector numbers, and corn plant age at inoculation with the corn stunt disease agent (CSA) to disease severity were investigated in a field cage and greenhouse. Plant age at inoculation with the CSA had more effect on corn stunt disease severity than that of leafhopper vector numbers. Plant height was reduced, incubation of the disease agent in the plants was shorter, and yield was less in plants inoculated at each earlier stage of development or with an increase in vector numbers.
