Abstract: An attempt to replicate the hyperemotionality syndrome seen in rats following olfactory bulb ablation was unsuccessful, despite the use of a single-blind testing procedure and seven response measures. No difference in postoperative emotionality was found when males and females were compared. Procedural differences were discussed which might account for the failure of the present study to replicate previous results.

Abstract: The hypothesis was tested that positive feedback following transgression would lead to less compliance than would an absence of feedback following transgression. It was also predicted that compliance following transgression would be reduced if a high self-esteem manipulation preceded the compliance request. A 2 by 2 by 2 factorial design manipulating transgression, self-esteem, and feedback was employed. Results supported the hypothesis.

Abstract: Anabaena flos-aquae A-37 was grown in bacteria-free culture on a variety of nitrogen sources. Extracellular polysaccharide production was found to be a part of the normal metabolic processes causing the liberation of excess carbohydrates into the surrounding medium rather than the result of cellular lysis. Non-adapted cells supplied with NH4C1 produced abundant polysaccharide. However, the population did not increase. Cells adapted to NH4C1 produced smaller quantities of polysaccharide, but the population did increase. Polysaccharide produc tion per cell was similar on Mg(N03)2, KN03, NaNOs, NH4N03, and NH4C1. It was concluded that an adequately utilized nitrogen source does not affect polysaccharide production in A. flos-aquae A-37.

Abstract: Unrelated words were randomly paired then presented in a verbal discrimination (VD) task. After VD learning, the 24 words were used in a typical multitrial free recall (FR) situation. Analysis of clustering in FR revealed that contiguous presentation of words during VD learning induced Ss to recall the words together. Association by contiguity appears to be one determinant of clustering (organization) of output order in FR.

Abstract: The present study assessed the relative response-elimination properties of three omission training procedures following VI and FI 20-sec pretraining. During omission training, response-reinforcement and reinforcement-reinforcement intervals both were 5, 20, or 35 sec. Regardless of the pretraining reinforcement schedule, the 5- and 35-sec groups showed the greatest and most rapid response reduction. However, findings from a durability test indicated that the response elimination of the 5-sec groups was very transient, whereas it was long lasting in the 20- and 35-sec groups.

Abstract: The current flow equations for nondegenerate and degenerate semiconductors at low temperature are discussed in terms of the Boltzmann transport equation. It is shown that the diffusion current in an inhomogeneous but isotropic semiconductor must be expressed as q.D(r). ∇n(r) where n(r) is the carrier (electron) concentration and D(r) is a spatially varying diffusion "constant." Some formulas which have been given for semiconductor device parameters, i.e., the emitter efficiency for heavily doped transistors when expressed as a ratio of resistivities, could be rigorously developed if the diffusion current were expressible as q.∇[D(r)n(r)]. However, this form is not consistent with the transport equation from which D(r) can be defined and evaluated.

The results provide a further warning against the use of macrosmatic animals in visual discrimination tasks in which olfactory cues may be relevant.
