TL;DR: Of the 43 plant families investigated, the Fe-containing superoxide dismutase was found in three families: Gingkoaceae, Nymphaceae, and Cruciferae.
Abstract: Superoxide dismutases (EC 11511) in vascular plants representing different evolutionary levels were characterized using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis The three forms of the enzyme were distinguished from each other based on the following criteria: a) the Cu-Zn enzyme is sensitive to cyanide wherease the Fe and Mn enzymes are not; and b) the Cu-Zn and Fe enzymes are inhibited by H2O2 whereas the Mn enzyme is H2O2-resistant Of the 43 plant families investigated, the Fe-containing superoxide dismutase was found in three families: Gingkoaceae, Nymphaceae, and Cruciferae

TL;DR: Results indicate that target enzyme sensitivity is not responsible for age-related toxicity differences, nor is the potential for hepatic bioactivation, whereas lower levels of hepatic aliesterase-mediated protection and P450-mediated dearylation probably contribute significantly to the greater sensitivity of juveniles to phosphorothionate toxicity.

TL;DR: GenBank, the public repository for nucleotide and protein sequences, is a critical resource for molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology and some attention has been drawn to sequence errors.
Abstract: GenBank, the public repository for nucleotide and protein sequences, is a critical resource for molecular biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology. While some attention has been drawn to sequence errors ([1][1]), common annotation errors also reduce the value of this database. In fact, for

17 Mar 2014TL;DR: Four data sets are described, which include network traffic, process control and process measurement features from a set of 28 attacks against two laboratory-scale industrial control systems that use the MODBUS application layer protocol, which enable effective comparisons of intrusion detection solutions for SCADA systems.
Abstract: Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems monitor and control physical processes associated with the critical infrastructure. Weaknesses in the application layer protocols, however, leave SCADA networks vulnerable to attack. In response, cyber security researchers have developed myriad intrusion detection systems. Researchers primarily rely on unique threat models and the corresponding network traffic data sets to train and validate their intrusion detection systems. This leads to a situation in which researchers cannot independently verify the results, cannot compare the effectiveness of different intrusion detection systems, and cannot adequately validate the ability of intrusion detection systems to detect various classes of attacks. Indeed, a common data set is needed that can be used by researchers to compare intrusion detection approaches and implementations. This paper describes four data sets, which include network traffic, process control and process measurement features from a set of 28 attacks against two laboratory-scale industrial control systems that use the MODBUS application layer protocol. The data sets, which are freely available, enable effective comparisons of intrusion detection solutions for SCADA systems.

TL;DR: The results suggest that while the rpoS gene does not influence acid resistance in acid-adapted cells it does confer decreased membrane fluidity, which may increase acid resistance and decrease verotoxin secretion.
Abstract: The influence of adaptation to pH (from pH 5.0 to 9.0) on membrane lipid composition, verotoxin concentration, and resistance to acidic conditions in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) (pH 1.5, 37 degrees C) was determined for Escherichia coli O157:H7 (HEC, ATCC 43895), an rpoS-deficient mutant of ATCC 43895 (HEC-RM, FRIK 816-3), and nonpathogenic E. coli (NPEC, ATCC 25922). Regardless of the strain, D values (in SGF) of acid-adapted cells were higher than those of non-acid-adapted cells, with HEC adapted at pH 5.0 having the greatest D value, i.e., 25.6 min. Acid adaptation increased the amounts of palmitic acid (C16:0) and decreased cis-vaccenic acid (C18:1 omega 7c) in the membrane lipids of all strains. The ratio of cis-vaccenic acid to palmitic acid increased at acidic pH, causing a decrease in membrane fluidity. HEC adapted to pH 8.3 and HEC-RM adapted to pH 7.3 exhibited the greatest verotoxin concentrations (2,470 and 1,460 ng/ml, respectively) at approximately 10(8) CFU/ml. In addition, the ratio of extracellular to intracellular verotoxin concentration decreased at acidic pH, possibly due to the decrease of membrane fluidity. These results suggest that while the rpoS gene does not influence acid resistance in acid-adapted cells it does confer decreased membrane fluidity, which may increase acid resistance and decrease verotoxin secretion.
