Abstract: Bacteriophage Listex P100 (phage P100) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service for Listeria monocytogenes control on both raw and ready-to-eat food products. In this article, we present the proof of concept on the influence of phage dose, phage contact time, and storage temperature on the listericidal activity of phage P100 in reducing the L. monocytogenes loads on the surface of fresh channel catfish fillet. The fresh catfish fillet samples were surface inoculated with ∼4.3 log10 colony forming units (CFU)/g of a two serotype mix (1/2a and 4b) of L. monocytogenes cells and then surface treated with phage P100. L. monocytogenes reduction was influenced by phage contact time and phage dose regardless of higher or lower temperature regimes tested on catfish fillet. Abstract: Plant protein sources were evaluated in 32% protein grow-out feeds for channel catfish (initial weight: 180 g/fish) stocked at high densities (24,700 fish/ha) in 0.04 ha earthen ponds. Each of the eight practical-type feeds was assigned for five replicate ponds. The fish were fed to satiation once daily for 170 d. Specifically, cottonseed meal and cottonseed meal plus supplemental lysine were evaluated as replacements for soybean meal. Soybean meal, a combination of soybean meal and cottonseed meal, or a combination of soybean meal and cottonseed meal plus supplemental lysine were evaluated as a substitute for animal protein sources. Based on weight pin, feed conversion ratio, body composition, percentage visceral fat, and dressed yield, the data indicated that cottonseed meal plus lysine can be used as a total substitute for soybean meal in catfish feeds. However, it is not recommended that more than 30% cottonseed meal be used in catfish feeds until additional data are available on the effects of gossypol on reproduction in catfish. Also, data indicated that plant proteins can be used as a total replacement for animal protein without detrimental effects. Reduced weight gain was observed in fish fed a feed that contained 68% of the established available lysine requirement. However, fish fed feeds estimated to contain only 76 or 82% of the available lysine requirement did not show reduced weight gain. This suggests that lysine may be more highly available from cottonseed meal than previously estimated, or that natural food organisms in the pond contributed nutrients including lysine, or that fish were able to consume enough of the marginally deficient feeds to meet their requirement for lysine. This study was conducted with large catfish fed a 32% protein feed to satiation once daily. If smaller fish, a lower protein fed, or a restricted feeding regimen had been used, the results may have been different.

Abstract: Juvenile Norris strain channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, blue catfish I. furcatus, and Norris strain channel catfish female × blue catfish male hybrids were challenged with Edwardsiella ictaluri by bath immersion or intraperitoneal injection (high or low dose) in aquaria. Survival (%) after bath immersion was highest for blue catfish (89.5 ± 2.8), intermediate for hybrids (73.8 ± 6.7), and lowest for channel catfish (62.0 ± 4.2). Prechallenge antibody levels to E. ictaluri, measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, were negative (mean ± SE optical density [OD] = 0.010 ± 0.003). Postchallenge antibody response for blue catfish (OD = 0.132 ± 0.045) was significantly lower than that of channel catfish (OD = 0.350 ± 0.045), whereas the response of the channel × blue catfish F1 hybrids (OD = 0.263 ± 0.051) was intermediate and not significantly different from either parental species. Abstract: We consider a reaction-diffusion equation which models the constant yield harvesting to a spatially heterogeneous population which satisfies a logistic growth. We prove the existence, uniqueness and stability of the maximal steady state solutions under certain conditions, and we also classify all steady state solutions under more restricted conditions. Exact global bifurcation diagrams are obtained in the latter case. Our method is a combination of comparison arguments and bifurcation theory.
