Abstract: Although beta-adrenergic blocking agents are a relatively new group of drugs, they have proven to be very useful in medical pharmacology. Since the successful introduction of propranolol (Inderal) a variety of analogous compounds have been developed. Most beta-blockers are racemic modifications and it is known that their enantiomers have different potencies and pharmacological effects. Hence, there has been considerable impetus for the production and study of the pure enantiomers. The chromatographic separation of these compounds has been dominated by the protein-based chiral stationary phases. Although selective, protein columns have limited capacity and stability. An efficient, alternative method has been found that does not suffer from the limitations of the protein phases. By using an unusual mobile phase consisting of a mixture of polar organic solvents in conjunction with the original native cyclodextrin bonded phase, the following compounds were resolved: propranolol, metoprolol, timolol, ...

Abstract: The smart electric power grid will evolve into a very complex adaptive system under semi-autonomous distributed control. Its spatial and temporal complexity, non-convexity, non-linearity, non-stationarity, variability and uncertainties exceed the characteristics found in today's traditional power system. The distributed integration of intermittent sources of energy and plug-in electric vehicles to a smart grid further adds complexity and challenges to its modeling, control and optimization. Innovative technologies are needed to handle the growing complexity of the smart grid and stochastic bidirectional optimal power flows, to maximize the penetration of renewable energy, and to provide maximum utilization of available energy storage, especially plug-in electric vehicles.

Abstract: Zirconium diboride–silicon carbide ceramics with relative densities in excess of 95% were produced by reactive hot pressing (RHP) at temperatures as low as 1650°C. The ZrB2 matrix was formed by reacting elemental zirconium and boron. Attrition milling of the starting powders produced nanosized (<100 nm) Zr particulates that reacted with B below 600°C. The reaction resulted in the formation of nanoscale ZrB2 crystallites that could be densified more than 250°C below the temperatures required for conventional ZrB2 powder. Because of the low-temperature densification, the resulting ZrB2 grain sizes were as small as 0.5±0.30 μm for specimens densified at 1650°C and 1.5±1.2 μm for specimens densified at 1800°C. Vickers hardness, elastic modulus, and flexure strength of fully dense materials produced by RHP were 27, 510, and 800 MPa, respectively.
