TL;DR: Results indicate that EMD can influence activities of cementoblasts and osteoblasts, and thus may be able to regulate cell activities at a periodontal regenerative site.
Abstract: Background: In order to design predictable periodontal regenerative therapies, it is important to understand the responsiveness of cells within the local environment to factors considered attractive candidates. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of an enamel matrix derivative (EMD) on cementoblast behavior in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Osteocalcin (OC) promoter SV40 transgenic mice were used to obtain cementoblasts. For comparison, preosteoblasts from these mice, as well as another murine preosteoblast cell line, MC3T3-E1 cells, were used. Cells exposed to EMD were evaluated for changes in: 1) proliferation over an 8-day period by cell counting; 2) gene expression using Northern blot analysis; and 3) biomineralization by von Kossa stain, in vitro and by preparing histological samples from implants retrieved from immunodeficient (SCID) mice, where cementoblasts were treated with EMD prior to implantation. Results: EMD promoted proliferation of all cell types. EMD down-regulated osteocalcin ...

TL;DR: In this paper, a model-in-the-loop capability (MIL) was developed to emulate the dynamics of alternative power sources in a hardware-based dc zonal electrical distribution system.
Abstract: A model-in-the-loop capability (MIL) has been developed to emulate the dynamics of alternative power sources in a hardware-based dc zonal electrical distribution system. Using this tool, models of the power sources are simulated in real-time and interfaced with hardware components at the voltage and current levels of the power system. Coupling between simulation and hardware is established through a dc/dc power converter using model/wall-clock time synchronization. The MIL capability is illustrated in the emulation of a synchronous machine/converter power source. Results of time-domain and frequency-domain studies are provided to validate the approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a complementary methodology to assist contemporary lean assessment tools that will provide a quantitative measure of leanness by benchmarking other exemplar lean industries along with specific pointers for improvements based on cost considerations.
Abstract: Lean manufacturing is a competitive philosophy adopted by many companies to produce cost effective products and services. Contemporary lean assessment tools are designed to evaluate a company's status of lean implementation and success. However, most lean assessment tools provide qualitative analysis and do not provide any clear direction of where the improvement efforts should be directed. In this paper, we propose a complementary methodology to assist contemporary lean assessment tools that will provide a quantitative measure of leanness by benchmarking other exemplar lean industries along with specific pointers for improvements based on cost considerations. The proposed Mahalanobis Taguchi Gram Schmidt System (MTGS) based methodology consists of four steps. The first three steps consist of data collection using contemporary lean assessment tools, standardizing the data, and using the standardized data for calculating the Mahalanobis Distance (MD) by the using the MTGS method. The MTGS method provides the direction of abnormality and can be used even in cases of multi-collinear data. The fourth step helps to identify the direction of improvement for a given set of capital constraints. The methodology is demonstrated using an example.
