Abstract: The objective of this paper is to define a rigorous numerical method to calibrate parameters of a given local bond-slip relationship using experimental results of pullout tests, taking into account the distribution of the slip and bond shear stress throughout the bar. The proposed method involves finding parameters of a given bond-slip relationship, such that results of pullout tests can be predicted in terms of applied pullout force and consequent slip at the loaded end and slip at the free end. The method is applied to some experimental data, and the results are discussed. For the application of the proposed method, two analytical expressions of the bond-slip relationship are selected, even though it could be applied to any analytical expression. An example of determination of anchorage length starting from the knowledge of the local bond-slip relationship is given.

Abstract: Optimal deployment and accurate localization of sensor nodes have a strong influence on the performance of a wireless sensor network (WSN). This paper considers real-time autonomous deployment of sensor nodes from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Such a deployment has importance, particularly in ad hoc WSNs, for emergency applications, such as disaster monitoring and battlefield surveillance. The objective is to deploy the nodes only in the terrains of interest, which are identified by segmentation of the images captured by a camera on board the UAV. Bioinspired algorithms, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA), are presented in this paper for image segmentation. In addition, PSO and BFA are presented for distributed localization of the deployed nodes. Image segmentation for autonomous deployment and distributed localization are formulated as multidimensional optimization problems, and PSO and BFA are used as optimization tools. Comparisons of the results of PSO and BFA for autonomous deployment and distributed localization are presented. Simulation results show that both the algorithms perform multilevel image segmentation faster than the exhaustive search for optimal thresholds. Besides, PSO-based localization is observed to be faster, and BFA-based localization is more accurate.

Abstract: The structurally related glycopeptide antibiotics vancomycin, ristocetin A, and teicoplanin can all be used as chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis (CE). Both experimental and modeling studies were done to elucidate their similarities and differences. There are identifiable morphological differences in the aglycon macrocyclic portions of these three compounds. In addition, there are other structural distinctions that can affect their CE enantioselectivity, migration times, and efficiency. Teicoplanin is the most distinct of the three and is the only one that is surface active. Its aggregational properties appear to affect its enantioselectivity among other things. The similar but not identical structures of the three glycopeptides produce similar but not identical enantioselectivities. This leads to the empirically useful “principle of complementary separations”, in which a partial resolution with one chiral selector can be brought to baseline with one of the others. Abstract: Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a 3D printing technology that can print metal parts with complex geometries without the design constraints of traditional manufacturing routes. However, the parts printed by LPBF normally contain many more pores than those made by conventional methods, which severely deteriorates their properties. Here, by combining in-situ high-speed high-resolution synchrotron x-ray imaging experiments and multi-physics modeling, we unveil the dynamics and mechanisms of pore motion and elimination in the LPBF process. We find that the high thermocapillary force, induced by the high temperature gradient in the laser interaction region, can rapidly eliminate pores from the melt pool during the LPBF process. The thermocapillary force driven pore elimination mechanism revealed here may guide the development of 3D printing approaches to achieve pore-free 3D printing of metals.
