Abstract: Growth in government investment, academic research, and commercial systems building is motivating a need for increased planning and coordination in the emerging field of question answering (QA). The internationalization of QA research, and the need to move toward a common understanding of resources, tasks and evaluation methods motivate a need to facilitate more rapid and efficient progress. This paper characterizes a range of question answering systems and provides an initial roadmap for future research, including a list of existing resources and ones under development. This roadmap was initiated at the LREC 2002 Workshop on QA and will be updated during the 2003 AAAI Spring Symposium using moderated group brainstorming sessions.

Abstract: We describe the rationale and construction of the family of L1C spreading codes and the associated family of overlay codes. The length-10230 spreading codes comprise 210 pilot/data sequence pairs. The codes are perfectly balanced and exhibit good even and odd auto- and crosscorrelation. They are constructed using prime-length Weil codes: selected length-10223 Weil-codes were padded with a fixed 7-bit pad. A search over all Weil codes and insertion points yielded a set of 739 codes from which the final set of 420 codes was chosen. Two separate families of codes were optimized based on modulation scheme (BOC(1,1) and MBOC). The length-1800 overlay codes are truncated linear feedback shift register sequences of length 2047, including both m-sequences and Gold sequences. Besides full period even auto- and cross-correlation, the overlay code search considered the correlation when a small subsequence (100 or 200 symbols) is correlated against the full code.

Abstract: The authors describe the lessons learned in extending the capabilities of a reverse engineering tool to analyze both an additional dialect of the language it was initially built to parse and a new embedded assembly language. The effort involved in this extension provides data to support the assertion that reverse engineering tools should create a clean separation between parsing the source code and analyzing it. A language independent modeling approach is discussed that will allow achieving this separation. Additional advantages that accrue by maintaining this separation, such as multiple language support and support for design recovery, are discussed. >

Abstract: Broadcast news sources and newspapers provide society with the vast majority of real-time information. Unfortunately, cost efficiencies and real-time pressures demand that producers, editors, and writers select and organize content for stereotypical audiences. In this article we illustrate how content understanding, user modeling, and tailored presentation generation promise personalcasts on demand. Specifically, we report on the design and implementation of a personalized version of a broadcast news understanding system, MITRE's Broadcast News Navigator (BNN), that tracks and infers user content interests and media preferences. We report on the incorporation of Local Context Analysis to both expand the user's original query to the most related terms in the corpus, as well as to allow the user to provide interactive feedback to enhance the relevance of selected newsstories. We describe an empirical study of the search for stories on ten topics from a video corpus. By personalizing both the selection of stories and the form in which they are delivered, we provide users with tailored broadcast news. This individual news personalization provides more fine-grained content tailoring than current personalized television program level recommenders and does not rely on externally provided program metadata.
