TL;DR: In this article, the phase stability of polycrystalline Ni3Al and Ni3Ga alloys with respect to the D022 phase as well as the D019 phase is investigated.
Abstract: Compression tests have been carried out on the polycrystalline Ni3Al and Ni3Ga alloys over the temperature range 77 ~ 1000 K. The flow stress and the temperature dependence of strength are found to be sensitive to small composition change within the phase field. The anomalous strengthening of these compounds with temperature is more significant for Al-and Ga-rich deviations than for Ni-rich deviations from stoichiometry. The change in activation constant of these compounds derived from the flow stress increment appears to be discontinuous at the stoichiometric composition. The influence of deviations from stoichiometry on the temperature dependence of strength could be accounted for by the phase stability concept proposed by the present authors. It is concluded that the phase stability of the Ni3Al and Ni3Ga alloys with respect to the D022 phase as well as the D019 phase are reduced as the composition of the minority component is increased. This change leads to the relatively reduced {100} antiphase boundary energy which increases the propensity for the cross slip onto cube plane.

TL;DR: The results suggest that in the Java sparrow the circadian rhythms of locomotor activity are regulated by a pineal-suprachiasmatic complex.
Abstract: The roles of the pineal organ and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the control of circadian rhythms of locomotor activity were examined in male Java sparrows (Padda oryzivora). 1. Removal of the pineal organ resulted in (i) no interference with entrainment to a light-dark (LD) cycle with anticipatory activity, (ii) appearance of residual circadian rhythmicity for a while after transfer from an LD cycle to a continuous dim light condition (LL), and (iii) subsequent loss of the circadian locomotor rhythms in prolonged LL (Fig. 1). 2. Birds with bilateral SCN lesions showed diurnal rhythms with anticipatory activity in LD cycles, but did not show any circadian rhythms in LL (Fig. 2). Unilateral lesions of the SCN did not lead to loss of circadian rhythms in LL. The length of the circadian period (τ), however, changed for about a month. 3. Continuous administration of melatonin induced suppression of the circadian activity rhythms and reduced total amount of locomotor activity in LL (Fig. 3).

TL;DR: The gene of an extreme thermophile, Thermus thermophilus HB8, which codes for a leucine biosynthetic enzyme, 3-isopropylmalate (3-IPM) dehydrogenase, was cloned in Escherichia coli using pBR322 as a vector and purified 28-fold, demonstrating that the extract from the plasmid-harboring cells is a good starting material for purification of the enzyme.
Abstract: The gene of an extreme thermophile, Thermus thermophilus HB8, which codes for a leucine biosynthetic enzyme, 3-isopropylmalate (3-IPM) dehydrogenase [EC 1.1.1.85], was cloned in Escherichia coli using pBR322 as a vector. E. coli cells carrying this recombinant plasmid, pHB2, produced the thermophilic enzyme 7-fold more than did T. thermophilus HB8 cells. When the crude extract of the pHB2-carrying cells was treated at 70 degrees C for 10 min, approximately 75% of the protein in the extract was precipitated with full activity of the thermophilic 3-IPM dehydrogenase being left in the supernatant, indicating that 4-fold purification was achieved during this process. This shows that the thermophilic 3-IPM dehydrogenase was purified 28-fold by these two procedures, cloning and heat treatment, and demonstrates that the extract from the plasmid-harboring cells is a good starting material for purification of the enzyme. Following the heat treatment, 3-IPM dehydrogenase was further purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The enzyme preparation thus obtained contained 3-IPM dehydrogenase as a major component with a few minor impurities as shown by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, whereas the enzyme preparation from T. thermophilus HB8 cells obtained by the same procedures showed multiple bands on a polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report that Nitrate in Antarctic soils is extremely depleted in 15N compared with biogenic nitrogen, and algae collected from a nitrate-rich saline pond and from a penguin rookery exhibit, respectively, the lowest and the highest 15N/14N ratios among terrestrial biogenic NOs so far observed.
Abstract: Antarctica offers a unique natural environment from the point of view of nitrogen cycling. Ice-free dry areas,‘Antarctic oases’, and penguin rookeries are of particular interest because of the characteristic distribution of nitrate deposits1–4 and biological materials such as algae and guano. As the distribution of 15N/14N in a geochemical system reflects sources and metabolic pathways of nitrogen5, a study of the nitrogen isotopic composition of Antarctic samples would help us to understand the Antarctic nitrogen cycle. Here we report that nitrate in Antarctic soils is extremely depleted in 15N compared with biogenic nitrogen, and that algae collected from a nitrate-rich saline pond and from a penguin rookery exhibit, respectively, the lowest and the highest 15N/14N ratios among terrestrial biogenic nitrogen so far observed. We also discuss possible causes of these extreme nitrogen isotopic compositions.

TL;DR: Polyacrylamidoxime chelating resins were synthesized from various co-polymers of acrylonitrile and cross-linking agents as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Seawater contains various elements in solution. Deuterium, lithium, and uranium are the important ingredients for energy application at present and in the future. This paper deals with the recovery of uranium from seawater, with emphasis on the development of an adsorbent with high selectivity and rate of adsorption for uranium. Polyacrylamidoxime chelating resins were synthesized from various co-polymers of acrylonitrile and cross-linking agents. The resulting resins with the chelating amidoxime group showed selective adsorption for uranium in seawater. The amount of uranium adsorbed from seawater at room temperature reached 3.2 mg/g resin after 180 days. Polyacrylamidoxime fiber, which was prepared from polyacrylo-nitrile fiber and hydroxylamine, showed a high rate of adsorption for uranium. The polyacrylamidoxime fiber conditioned with 1 M HCl and 1 M NaOH adsorbed 4 mg U/g fiber from seawater in ten days.

TL;DR: To demonstrate the distribution of possible nAChRs in the mouse central nervous system, detailed maps of α‐BGT binding sites were made by light microscopic autoradiography and the distribution patterns of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were mapped histochemically and were correlated to those of α-BGTbinding sites.
Abstract: Alpha-bungarotoxin (α-BGT) has been established as a specific ligand for peripheral nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). To demonstrate the distribution of possible nAChRs in the mouse central nervous system, detailed maps of α-BGT binding sites were made by light microscopic autoradiography. Cryostat sections fixed with 4% paraformaldehyde were incubated with [125I]α-BGT and were processed for autoradiographic visualization of bound radioactivity. Systematic observations of the autoradiographs revealed extensive but uneven distributions of α-BGT binding sites throughout the brain and spinal cord. The highest level of toxin binding occurred in the nucleus (nuc.) dorsalis tegmenti (von Gudden) as well as in the nuc. subthalamicus, nuc. amygdaloideus medialis posterior, nuc. centrum medianum-parafascicularis thalami, nuc. interpeduncularis pars lateralis, nuc. parabigeminalis, colliculus posterior, and nuc. dorsalis nervi vagi. The distribution patterns of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were also mapped histochemically and were correlated to those of α-BGT binding sites. Most of the regions with significant levels of α-BGT binding also showed significant staining reaction of AChE.

Abstract: A torque transmission device for eliminating the transmission of tortional vibration from a driving shaft to a driven shaft comprises a clutch capable of controlled slippage so that the speed of rotation of the driven shaft is lower than the speed of the driving shaft. Slippage of the clutch is controlled by sensing the speed of rotation and the fluctuation of the speed of rotating of the driving shaft and the speed of rotation of the driven shaft and regulating slippage so that the difference in rotation speed between the two shafts is greater than the fluctuation in rotation speed of the driving shaft. The clutch may be an electromagnetic clutch of which the exciting current is controlled or a friction clutch actuated by controlled hydraulic pressure. The clutch may be in parallel with a fluid coupling.
