TL;DR: To obtain direct evidence that ubiquitin is a component of PHF, PHF were treated with concentrated formic acid and digested with lysylendopeptidase; ubiquitIn-derived peptides were then identified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography.
Abstract: Paired helical filaments (PHF), which constitute a distinct type of pathological neuronal fiber, are the principal constituent of neurofibrillary tangles that occur in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Their insolubility in sodium dodecyl sulfate and urea has prevented the analysis of their subunit composition by gel electrophoresis. A monoclonal antibody (DF2) was isolated that specifically labeled PHF at both the light and electron microscopic levels. It labeled a small polypeptide (5 kilodaltons) that was shown to be ubiquitin in immunoblots of the soluble fraction of brain homogenates. To obtain direct evidence that ubiquitin is a component of PHF, PHF were treated with concentrated formic acid and digested with lysylendopeptidase; ubiquitin-derived peptides were then identified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Two fragments in the PHF digest were identified as derived from ubiquitin by protein sequencing. This procedure should make possible definitive identification of other PHF components.

TL;DR: In this paper, a control apparatus for controlling the main circuit for driving an AC electric motor consisting of a diode converter and a pulse width modulation (PWM) power converting device is presented.
Abstract: A control apparatus for controlling the main circuit for driving an AC electric motor consisting of a diode converter and a pulse width modulation (PWM) power converting device, in which it is arranged that the DC current as the output of the diode converter is detected by a current detector, the AC component of this DC current is filtered through a high-pass filter, and a pulse-width-modulation control is exercised by a control circuit in response to the output of the high-pass filter so that the DC current as the output of the diode converter may be smoothed out in the main circuit by the PWM power converting device. By such arrangement, this control apparatus of an electric motor is made smaller in size and simplified in structure and enabled to control the power factor of the power source of the diode converter to close to 1.0.

TL;DR: The application of orthogonal-field-alternation gel electrophoresis to the isolation of linear plasmids from Streptomyces is reported here and it is confirmed that genes for methylenomycin biosynthesis are located on a series of giant linear plasmsids in S. coelicolor.
Abstract: A number of examples of circular plasmids with specific functions are known in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Several linear plasmids have also been identified, but these are all relatively small: large linear plasmids cannot be separated from chromosomal DNA by conventional techniques. There are several cases where the genetic evidence suggests that a character is encoded by a plasmid but no plasmid can be physically detected. This has been the case for antibiotic synthesis genes in Streptomyces; in particular a plasmid SCP1 in Streptomyces coelicolor has been shown to be involved in methylenomycin production by genetic evidence. We report here the application of orthogonal-field-alternation gel electrophoresis to the isolation of linear plasmids from Streptomyces. We have discovered a large linear plasmid of around 520 kilobases in Streptomyces lasaliensis and subsequently similar giant linear plasmids in other Streptomyces strains. We have confirmed that genes for methylenomycin biosynthesis are located on a series of giant linear plasmids in S. coelicolor. These observations may bear on the genetic variability and unstable genetic character of Streptomyces species.

Abstract: A motor-driven power steering system for a vehicle capable of preventing a motor-related element such as a motor itself, power elements for controlling power supply to the motor or the like from being damage due to an abnormal temperature rise or overheating thereof, thereby substantially avoiding or reducing resultant unsureness or instability in the operator's steering feeling upon change in steering mode as well as improving safety in steering operation. The motor is operatively connected with a steering rack and energizable by a power source for power assisting the steering motion caused by the operator through a steering wheel. A temperature sensor detects the temperature of the motor-related element. An electromagnetic switching clutch is interposed between the motor and the steering rack for selectively establishing and interrupting the transmission of power assisting force from the motor to the steering rack in accordance with the travelling speed of the vehicle. A control uint is provided for controlling the operation of the motor in such a manner such that when the detected temperature of the motor-related element is higher than a prescribed level, the current supplied to the motor through the motor-related element is gradually reduced to lower the temperature of the motor-related element.

TL;DR: In this article, the distributions and stable isotope ratios of biogenic nitrogen and carbon were investigated in detail along a small watershed in order to establish a biogeochemical framework for assessing the fate of organic matter.
Abstract: The distributions and stable isotope ratios of biogenic nitrogen and carbon were investigated in detail along a small watershed in order to establish a biogeochemical framework for assessing the fate of organic matter. Forest ecosystems supply soluble and particulate materials to river systems which are depleted in 15N and 13C. The number of suspended particles and the concentrations of δ15N and δ13C in the river sediments increased along the watershed, indicating a change from river to marine ecosystems. Dramatic variation of δ15N and δ13C were observed in the intertidal sediments, where the progress of denitrification, discharge of domestic sewage, and the accumulation and the decomposition of macroalgae and seagrasses took place. The contribution of land-derived organic matter to estuarine sediments has been estimated from δ13C and from δ15N data. The contribution the landderived organo-silty-clay mineral was 70–100% in the inner bay sediments and 34–42% at the open bay. Possible factors that influence the variation of stable isotope ratios along the watershed are discussed. The relationship between the sizes of particles and isotope ratios clearly demonstrated that organo-silty-clay minerals with diameter smaller than 64 μm were the major source of land-derived refractory organics.

TL;DR: In this paper, an address counter (2) counts the clock pulses sequentially to provide a count value as an address signal to a coincidence detecting circuit (3) and decoder (4).
Abstract: An address counter (2) counts the clock pulses sequentially to provide a count value as an address signal to a coincidence detecting circuit (3) and decoder (4). The coincidence detecting circuit (3) compares delay data applied from a delay data generating circuit (8) with the address signal and applies a reset signal to the address counter (2) when they coincide with each other. The address counter (2) repeats sequentially the above-mentioned operation in response to the reset signal after the count of address is reset to a predetermined value. The decoder (4) specifies a memory cell comprised in a memory device for performing a reading and writing operation in response to the address signal. The data output circuit (6) and the data input circuit (5) perform the reading and writing operation sequentially to the specified memory cell in response to the control signal outputted from the control circuit (7). As a result, the input data previously written is read and outputted with a delay. Therefore, a delayed input data can be obtained as an output data.

Abstract: A bit length corresponding to a delay time of required data is preset in a bit length setting circuit (15). A write timing signal from an external control circuit (6) is applied to a write address decoder (3) and a read timing signal generating circuit (2). Input data is written into memory cells in a memory device (5) addressed by the write address decoder (3) operating in response to the write timing signal. On the other hand, a read timing signal generating circuit (2) generates a read timing signal delayed from the write timing signal by a delay time corresponding to a bit length signal in response to the bit length signal from the bit length setting circuit (15) and the write timing signal from outside. The read address decoder (4) sequentially addresses memory cells containing input data which have been written, reads written data and then outputs output data. Applications of the circuit include frame synchronization, variable delay and storage of picture data in a video communications system.
