TL;DR: The set of possible solutions for a next generation PON is presented, and how the key requirement of coexistence could be accommodated is considered.
Abstract: Given the requirements for a next-generation PON, the architecture of the system solution must be considered. There are many different systems that can provide the services and system-level features desired for a next generation PON; however, each has its own challenges and advantages. This article presents the set of possible solutions, and puts them into perspective of likely standardization. It also considers how the key requirement of coexistence could be accommodated.

17 Jul 1997TL;DR: In this article, an information processing system capable of updating a basic input/output system (BIOS) program without interrupting or stopping the operation of the system is provided, and an update program input arrangement supplies an update basic input-output system program to the update program memory to write the program thereinto while the operating system is in operation.
Abstract: There is provided with an information processing system capable of updating a basic input/output system (BIOS) programme without interrupting or stopping the operation of the system. The information processing system (41) comprises an update programme memory (48) and a BIOS update flag (50). The update programme memory (48) retains the contents stored therein after the electrical power to the information processing system (41) has been turned off. An update programme input arrangement supplies an update basic input/output system programme to the update programme memory (48) to write the programme thereinto while the operating system is in operation. The update programme input arrangement then sets the BIOS update flag (50). A system loading arrangement copies the update basic input/output system programme stored in the update programme memory (48) to a memory area of a main memory (44) when the BIOS update flag (50) is set upon loading the operating system (i.e., when the information processing system is turned on or is reset).

TL;DR: The sequence of cno cDNA clones isolated from an embryonic cDNA library revealed a long open reading frame that potentially encodes a 1893-amino-acid protein with the GLGF/DHR motif, a conserved sequence in Discs large, Dishevelled, and some other proteins associated with cellular junctions.
Abstract: The canoemisty1 (cnomis1) mutation was isolated by virtue of its severe rough eye phenotype from approximately 500 fly lines, each harboring a single autosomal insertion of a P element (Bm delta w). Excision of the P element generated a lethal, null allele, cnomis10, together with many revertants with normal eye morphology. Ommatidia homozygous for cnomis10, produced in an otherwise wild-type eye by somatic recombination, typically contain a reduced number of outer photoreceptors. Some cnomis1 homozygous adults bear extra macrochaetes on the head, notum, humerus and/or scutellum. cnomis1 hemizygotes often show conspicuous wing phenotypes such as a notched blade and the loss of a cross vein. The sequence of cno cDNA clones isolated from an embryonic cDNA library revealed a long open reading frame that potentially encodes a 1893-amino-acid protein with the GLGF/DHR motif, a conserved sequence in Discs large, Dishevelled, and some other proteins associated with cellular junctions. Flies doubly mutant for cnomis1 and scabrous1 (sca1) and those for cnomis1 and the split (spl) allele of Notch (N) always have rumpled wings curved downward. The spl; cnomis1 double mutant flies also exhibit a "giant socket" phenotype. These phenotypes are rarely observed flies singly mutant for either cnomis1, sca1 or spl. The wing vein gaps caused by Abruptex1, a N allele producing an activated form of N protein, are dominantly suppressed by cnomis1. Heterozygosity for shaggy and myospheroid promotes formation of extra wing veins in cnomis1 homozygotes. The genetic interactions suggest that cno participates with members of the N pathway in regulating adhesive cell-cell interactions for the determination of cell fate.

TL;DR: The ER titers in HCC did not have any correlation with serum levels of α‐fetoprotein or carcinoembryonic antigen, hepatitis B virus profils, and histologic types of the tumor.
Abstract: Estrogen receptors (ER) were assayed on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and surrounding liver tissue in 30 adult patients All specimens were obtained at the time of surgery Cirrhosis of the liver was associated with 28 patients and chronic hepatitis in 2 patients ERs were detected in 12 of 30 HCCs The value ranged from 14 to 92 fmol/mg cytosol protein with the dissociation constant (Kd) value less than 1 nanomol On the other hand, 13 of 28 cirrhotic livers had measurable amounts of the receptors that ranged from 15 to 41 fmol/mg cytosol protein Two livers with chronic hepatitis did not have detectable amounts of ERs The receptors were not detected in both the tumor and liver in ten patients The ER titers in HCC did not have any correlation with serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein or carcinoembryonic antigen, hepatitis B virus profiles, and histologic types of the tumor In the light of the current results, it would be of great interest whether hormone therapy can be used or not as a treatment of naturally occurring HCC in humans

TL;DR: The mechanism by which restraint stress induces suppression of food intake and the influence of intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of somatostatin on the anorexia induced by restraint stress were examined in the rat, providing further evidence in support of the theory that CRF is involved in the inhibitory mechanism ofFood intake in restraint stress.
