Abstract: Parthenogenesis in the mouse is embryonic lethal partly because of imprinted genes that are expressed only from the paternal genome. In a systematic screen using subtraction hybridization between cDNAs from normal and parthenogenetic embryos, we initially identified two apparently novel imprinted genes, Peg1 and Peg3. Peg1 (paternally expressed gene 1) or Mest, the first imprinted gene found on the mouse chromosome 6, may contribute to the lethality of parthenogenones and of embryos with a maternal duplication for the proximal chromosome 6. Peg1/Mest is widely expressed in mesodermal tissues and belongs to the alpha/beta hydrolase fold family. A similar approach with androgenones can be used to identify imprinted genes that are expressed from the maternal genome only.

Abstract: Vehicle active safety receives ever increasing attention in the attempt to achieve zero accidents on the road. In this paper, we investigate a control architecture that has the potential of improving yaw stability control by achieving faster convergence and reduced impact on the longitudinal dynamics. We consider a system where active front steering and differential braking are available and propose a model predictive control (MPC) strategy to coordinate the actuators. We formulate the vehicle dynamics with respect to the tire slip angles and use a piecewise affine (PWA) approximation of the tire force characteristics. The resulting PWA system is used as prediction model in a hybrid MPC strategy. After assessing the benefits of the proposed approach, we synthesize the controller by using a switched MPC strategy, where the tire conditions (linear/saturated) are assumed not to change during the prediction horizon. The assessment of the controller computational load and memory requirements indicates that it is capable of real-time execution in automotive-grade electronic control units. Experimental tests in different maneuvers executed on low-friction surfaces demonstrate the high performance of the controller.

Abstract: A wide range of resources on gene expression profiling enhance various strategies in plant molecular biology particularly in characterization of gene function. We have updated our gene expression profile database, RiceXPro (http://ricexpro.dna.affrc.go.jp/), to provide more comprehensive information on the transcriptome of rice encompassing the entire growth cycle and various experimental conditions. The gene expression profiles are currently grouped into three categories, namely, 'field/development' with 572 data corresponding to 12 data sets, 'plant hormone' with 143 data corresponding to 13 data sets and 'cell- and tissue-type' comprising of 38 microarray data. In addition to the interface for retrieving expression information of a gene/genes in each data set, we have incorporated an interface for a global approach in searching an overall view of the gene expression profiles from multiple data sets within each category. Furthermore, we have also added a BLAST search function that enables users to explore expression profile of a gene/genes with similarity to a query sequence. Therefore, the updated version of RiceXPro can be used more efficiently to survey the gene expression signature of rice in sufficient depth and may also provide clues on gene function of other cereal crops.

Abstract: The development of Sn-based perovskite solar cells has been challenging because devices often show short-circuit behavior due to poor morphologies and undesired electrical properties of the thin films. A low-temperature vapor-assisted solution process (LT-VASP) has been employed as a novel kinetically controlled gas–solid reaction film fabrication method to prepare lead-free CH3NH3SnI3 thin films. We show that the solid SnI2 substrate temperature is the key parameter in achieving perovskite films with high surface coverage and excellent uniformity. The resulting high-quality CH3NH3SnI3 films allow the successful fabrication of solar cells with drastically improved reproducibility, reaching an efficiency of 1.86%. Furthermore, our Kelvin probe studies show the VASP films have a doping level lower than that of films prepared from the conventional one-step method, effectively lowering the film conductivity.
