12 Apr 2010TL;DR: Historic developments in orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) was adopted by the WiMAX Forum for mobile WiMAX systems and more recently by the 3GPP for the downlink of Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, while single-carrier FDMA was adopted for the uplink of LTE.
Abstract: The debate on OFDM vs. single-carrier (SC) transmission started back in the 1980s at the time of the European Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) projects. The same questions arose later in wireless communications, and OFDM transmission with TDMA was adopted in the IEEE 802.11a specifications for wireless local area networks and by the WiMAX Forum for fixed WiMAX systems. Later, orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) was adopted by the WiMAX Forum for mobile WiMAX systems and more recently by the 3GPP for the downlink of Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. In contrast, single-carrier FDMA was adopted for the uplink of LTE. In this overview paper, we will review these historic developments and give some recent results on OFDMA and Single-Carrier FDMA.

21 Jul 2011TL;DR: In this paper, a control signal for providing a chroma format type of an input moving image signal is provided, and encoding and decoding are uniformly carried out for a plurality of chroma formats.
Abstract: Encoding and decoding are uniformly carried out for a plurality of chroma formats. Based on a control signal for providing a chroma format type of an input moving image signal, in the case of a chroma format of 4:2:0 or 4:2:2, a first intra prediction mode deciding unit and a first intra prediction image generation unit are applied to a luminance component of the input moving image signal, and a second intra prediction mode deciding unit and a second intra prediction image generation unit are applied to a chrominance component. In the case of a chroma format of 4:4:4, the first intra prediction mode deciding unit and the first intra prediction image generation unit are applied to all color components to carry out encoding, and a variable length encoding unit multiplexes the control signal as encoding data to be applied to a moving image sequence unit on a bit stream.

04 Jul 2010TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the development of the world's largest constant output stabilization system using 34 MW sodium sulfur batteries for a 51 MW wind farm at Futamata in the Tohoku district of Japan, as well as their field experiences indicating excellent operating performance.
Abstract: Wind turbines (WTs) are considered to be one of effective approach to solve global warming and energy issues. However, the output of WTs depends on the weather conditions and the natural environment, which cause large fluctuations in the output power, leading to insufficient of frequency adjustment capacity of the power grid. Several methods have been examined to compensate for such large fluctuations using batteries. In this paper, we describe the development of the world's largest constant output stabilization system using 34 MW sodium sulfur (NAS) batteries for a 51 MW wind farm at Futamata in the Tohoku district of Japan, as well as our field experiences indicating excellent operating performance.

12 Sep 2008TL;DR: In this article, a thermal conductive sheet characterized by comprising secondary particles composed of boron nitride primary particles and matrix resin is presented, wherein the secondary particles are deformed and the deformed secondary particles surface contact each other.
Abstract: The present invention is a thermal conductive sheet characterized by comprising secondary particles composed of boron nitride primary particles and matrix resin, wherein the secondary particles are deformed and the deformed secondary particles surface contact each other. The ratio of the matrix resin that exists between the secondary particles in this thermal conductive sheet is preferably 5 volume%-50 volume%. This thermal conductive sheet has advantages in productivity and cost, and has excellent thermal conductivity in a sheet thickness direction and electric insulation.

06 Aug 2001TL;DR: It is shown that MIMO autopilot design problem can be decomposed into feedback and feedforward controller design problems and improved response and robustness against the reaction-jet force saturation of the designed control system is proven by the simulation.
Abstract: Advanced guidance missiles employ blended control of aero-fin and reaction-jet to improve the guidance performance against highly maneuverable targets. The blended control requires multiple inputs and multiple outputs (MIMO) control system design, the design process is much complex than that of conventional aero-fin autopilot. This paper describes a autopilot design for a missile with aero-fin and reaction-jet using the Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM). Performance and stability trade-off study using the CDM is summarized. It is shown that MIMO autopilot design problem can be decomposed into feedback and feedforward controller design problems. A reasonable form of the controller is suggested using the coefficient diagram. A feedback controller is designed using the algebraical approach. The form of the controller has the same form as the conventional design. A wash-out type feedforward controller achieving the minimum fuel consumption is designed using the same manner. It is shown that the feedforward controller can be designed independently of the feedback controller. Improved response and robustness against the reaction-jet force saturation of the designed control system is proven by the simulation.
