Abstract: We introduce a novel soft antenna selection approach for multiple antenna systems through a joint design of both RF (radio frequency) and baseband signal processing. When only a limited number of frequency converters are available, conventional antenna selection schemes show severe performance degradation in most fading channels. To alleviate those degradations, we propose to adopt a transformation of the signals in the RF domain that requires only simple, variable phase shifters and combiners to reduce the number of RF chains. The constrained optimum design of these shifters, adapting to the channel state, is given in analytical form, which requires no search or iterations. The resulting system shows a significant performance advantage for both correlated and uncorrelated channels. The technique works for both transmitter and receiver design, which leads to the joint transceiver antenna selection. When only a single information stream is transmitted through the channel, the new design can achieve the same SNR gain as the full-complexity system while requiring, at most, two RF chains. With multiple information streams transmitted, it is demonstrated by computer experiments that the capacity performance is close to optimum.

Abstract: Image rendering maps scene parameters to output pixel values; animation maps motion-control parameters to trajectory values. Because these mapping functions are usually multidimensional, nonlinear, and discontinuous, finding input parameters that yield desirable output values is often a painful process of manual tweaking. Interactive evolution and inverse design are two general methodologies for computer-assisted parameter setting in which the computer plays a prominent role. In this paper we present another such methodology. Design GalleryTM (DG) interfaces present the user with the broadest selection, automatically generated and organized, of perceptually different graphics or animations that can be produced by varying a given input-parameter vector. The principal technical challenges posed by the DG approach are dispersion, finding a set of input-parameter vectors that optimally disperses the resulting output-value vectors, and arrangement, organizing the resulting graphics for easy and intuitive browsing by the user. We describe the use of DG interfaces for several parameter-setting problems: light selection and placement for image rendering, both standard and image-based; opacity and color transfer-function specification for volume rendering; and motion control for particle-system and articulated-figure animation. Abstract: The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) was developed and provided to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's EOS Aqua satellite by the National Space Development Agency of Japan, as one of the indispensable instruments for Aqua's mission. AMSR-E is a modified version of AMSR that was launched December 2002 aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II). It is a six-frequency dual-polarized total-power passive microwave radiometer that observes water-related geophysical parameters supporting global change science and monitoring efforts. The hardware improvements over existing spaceborne microwave radiometers for Earth imaging include the largest main reflector of its kind and addition of 6.925-GHz channels. These improvements provide finer spatial resolution and the capability to retrieve sea surface temperature and soil moisture information on a global basis. This paper provides an overview of the instrument characteristics, mission objectives, and data products.

Abstract: This paper presents a fully secure functional encryption scheme for a wide class of relations, that are specified by nonmonotone access structures combined with inner-product relations. The security is proven under a well-established assumption, the decisional linear (DLIN) assumption, in the standard model. The proposed functional encryption scheme covers, as special cases, (1) key-policy and ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption with non-monotone access structures, and (2) (hierarchical) predicate encryption with inner-product relations and functional encryption with non-zero inner-product relations.
