Abstract: A resin combination comprising a thermoplastic polymer matrix having dispersed therein as distinct phases, a multiplicity of small spherical solid particles of polybutylene terephthalate, the resin combination in opaque biaxially oriented polymeric film form and the same oriented film structure having on at least one surface thereof a void-free thermoplastic skin layer. The process for preparing a biaxially oriented opaque film comprising providing said resin combination, forming an unoriented film of said resin combination and biaxially orienting said film to an extent sufficient to opacify the same. The process also provides for the opaque film having a void-free thermoplastic skin layer on at least one surface thereof.

Abstract: Seismic data from the Angolan margin and laboratory experiments on brittle-ductile models are used to study thin-skinned deformation above the salt at margin scale, which is characterized by extension upslope and contraction downslope. The initial geometry of the salt basin was wedging out, both landward and seaward, and the salt was entirely covered by sediments at the onset of gravity-driven deformation. Downslope contraction is accommodated by upslope extension. The upslope extensional domain is subdivided into three subdomains with (1) sealed tilted blocks, (2) growth fault and rollover systems, and (3) extensional diapirs. We interpret this particular arrangement of extensional structures as directly resulting from variations in mechanical coupling between brittle (sediments) and ductile (salt) layers. The downslope contractional domain is subdivided into three subdomains with (1) diapirs squeezed at late stage, (2) polyharmonic folds and thrust faults developed at early stage, and (3) folds and thrusts developed at late stage. This structural zoning results from the initiation of contraction at a distance from the salt toe and further migration of contraction immediately downslope and upslope.

Abstract: A method for identifying the location of the extent of travel of a combustion front following an in situ oil recovery operation employs a source of seismic energy and at least one seismic receiver for detecting seismic reflection signals from boundaries between subterranean formations on either side or opposite sides of such location. The properties of these seismic reflection signals are changed by the reduction in water saturation in the oil reservoir caused by the drying effect of the combustion front, and any such change is detected as an identification of the location of the extent of travel of the combustion front through the oil reservoir.

Abstract: A novel zipper profile is disclosed in which the cross-sectional shape of the zipper is such that it can be closed most easily by pressing the bottom together first, then rolling it closed toward the top. The novel slider is shaped so that it operates in this fashion on the zipper profile, holding the top open while it presses the bottom together, then presses the top together while the slider passes by.

Abstract: The direct P and S wave arrival times are the primary data set that can be measured on the seismograms of natural lunar seismic events. Polarization filtering techniques allow the enhancement of secondary body wave arrivals and record curves to identify the secondary phases and deduce structural information. Finally, shear wave amplitude vs. distance curves yield information on the location and magnitude of seismic velocity gradients in the interior. The results of these analyses show that the moon appears to have a two-layer crust at all four seismic stations: a 20 km upper crust that seems to be constant at all sites and a lower crust that is 40 km thick at stations 12 and 14 (mare), 55 + or - 10 km at station 16 (highland), and tentatively either 40 km or 70 km at station 15. The lower mantle extends from 480 km to at least 1100 km depth which is the maximum depth of penetration of all but a few seismic waves used as data. No definitive evidence for or against a lunar core exists.
