01 Jan 1999TL;DR: In this paper, the Faeroe-Shetland Basin has been affected by at least five rift events from the Permo-Triassic to the Paleocene, and the locus of rifting shifted with time.
Abstract: This paper discusses the development of the Faeroe–Shetland Basin. The area has been affected by at least five rift events from the Permo-Triassic to the Paleocene. Numerous authors have invoked the reactivation of older structures as a major influence on subsequent tectonic events. In this paper the aim is to demonstrate that the locus of rifting shifted with time.

TL;DR: In this article, density functional theory is used to estimate hydrogen adsorption in a novel carbonaceous material, single-walled carbon nanotubes, and the overall hydrogen volumetric and gravimetric density within the framework of a typical high-pressure gas storage system.
Abstract: In this paper, density functional theory is used to estimate hydrogen adsorption in a novel carbonaceous material, single-walled carbon nanotubes. An idealized adsorbent structure for the nanotubes is assumed. We have mapped out the regime of operating pressures and temperatures where an adsorption-based storage system is expected to deliver more hydrogen than a similar system of compressed gas. This regime is also a function of pore size. We have calculated the overall hydrogen volumetric and gravimetric density within the framework of a typical high-pressure gas storage system. Within the regime of operating conditions where adsorptive storage seems attractive, the storage properties of hydrogen in a carbon nanotube system appear to fall far short of the targets of 62 kg of H2/m3 and 6.5 wt % H2 set by the Department of Energy. The computed gravimetric storage densities also fall short of those reported in the literature (Nature 1997, 386, 377). We discuss several possible mechanisms by which higher gra...

TL;DR: In this paper, the acid-metal balance requirements for Pt/zeolite catalysts were investigated using physical mixtures of zeolite beta and Pt/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] particles.
Abstract: The hydroisomerization of n-heptane has been used as a model to study the acid-metal balance requirements for Pt/zeolite catalysts. Experiments were carried out using physical mixtures of zeolite beta and Pt/Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] particles, in which the level of the metal-containing component was varied to change the acid-metal balance. Selectivity, in terms of cracking vs. isomerization, varies significantly with the metal loading up to a point beyond which the degree of paraffin isomerization is independent of metal loading. These results are interpreted in terms of a simple dual-site model based on a classical theory of polyfunctional catalysis, first advanced by Weisz (1962). The model is also used to show how an imbalance in hydrogenation and acid functions can even alter the apparent reaction network of the observable chemical species in the system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the distribution of perylene in basin sediments off southern California is reported and discussed in terms of the depositional environments, and it is suggested that this hydrocarbon is formed by reduction of peri-hydroxyperylenequinone pigments of biological origin.

31 Mar 1975TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a method of creating a horizontally disposed fracture in a subterranean formation that is penetrated by a wellbore, where two packers are set against the formation to be fractured to define with the well-bore and intermediate the packers a fracture treatment zone.
Abstract: This specification discloses a method of creating a horizontally disposed fracture in a subterranean formation that is penetrated by a wellbore. Two packers are set in the wellbore against the formation to be fractured to define with the wellbore and intermediate the packers a fracture treatment zone. Hydraulic pressure is applied to the fracture treatment zone in an amount slightly less than that required to create a vertical fracture in the formation. Acoustical energy is applied in the fracture treatment zone to form a resonant condition therein and to provide rigid coupling of acoustic stress pulses between the packer and the formation and form a horizontal fracture in the formation. The horizontal fracture is propagated into the formation by the continued application of the hydraulic pressure to the fracture treatment zone.
