TL;DR: It is shown that the imaginary part of the dielectric function of gold, which is responsible for optical losses, rapidly increases as the film thickness decreases for thicknesses below 80 nm, and these findings establish design rules for thin-film plasmonic and nanophotonic devices.
Abstract: We report a comprehensive experimental study of optical and electrical properties of thin polycrystalline gold films in a wide range of film thicknesses (from 20 to 200 nm). Our experimental results are supported by theoretical calculations based on the measured morphology of the fabricated gold films. We demonstrate that the dielectric function of the metal is determined by its structural morphology. Although the fabrication process can be absolutely the same for different films, the dielectric function can strongly depend on the film thickness. Our studies show that the imaginary part of the dielectric function of gold, which is responsible for optical losses, rapidly increases as the film thickness decreases for thicknesses below 80 nm. At the same time, we do not observe a noticeable dependence of optical constants on the film thickness for thicker samples. These findings establish design rules for thin-film plasmonic and nanophotonic devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-) (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) at root s = 4.26 GeV using a 525 pb(-1) data sample collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring.
Abstract: We report on a study of the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-) (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) at root s = 4.26 GeV using a 525 pb(-1) data sample collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. A distinct charged structure is observed in the (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) invariant mass distribution. When fitted to a mass- dependent- width Breit- Wigner line shape, the pole mass and width are determined to be M-pole (3883: 9 +/- 1.5 (stat) +/- 4.2 dsyst__ MeV= c(2) and Gamma(pole) = (24: 8 +/- 3.3 (stat) +/- 11: 0 (syst)) MeV. The mass and width of the structure, which we refer to as Z(c)(3885), are 2 sigma and 1 sigma, respectively, below those of the Z(c)(3900) -> pi(+/-) J/psi peak observed by BESIII and Belle in pi(+)pi(-) J/psi final states produced at the same center- of- mass energy. The angular distribution of the pi Z(c)(3885) system favors a J(P) = J(P) = 1(+) quantum number assignment for the structure and disfavors 1(-) or 0(-). The Born cross section times the (D (D) over bar*) branching fraction of the Z(c)(3885) is measured to be sigma(e(+)e(-) -> pi(+/-)Z(c)(3885)(-/+)) x B(Z(c)(3885)-/+ -> (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) = (83.5 +/- 6.6 (stat) +/- 22.0 (syst)) pb. Assuming the Z(c)(3885) -> (D (D) over bar*)(-/+) signal reported here and the Z(c)(3900) -> pi J/psi signal are from the same source, the partial width ratio (Gamma(Z(c)(3885) -> D (D) over bar*)/Gamma(Z(c)(3900) -> pi J/psi)) = 6.2 +/- 1.1 (stat) +/- 2.7 (syst) is determined.

TL;DR: A strategy of hierarchical modelling with successive downselection stages to accelerate the identification of polymer dielectrics that have the potential to surpass 'standard' materials for a given application is proposed.
Abstract: To date, trial and error strategies guided by intuition have dominated the identification of materials suitable for a specific application. We are entering a data-rich, modelling-driven era where such Edisonian approaches are gradually being replaced by rational strategies, which couple predictions from advanced computational screening with targeted experimental synthesis and validation. Here, consistent with this emerging paradigm, we propose a strategy of hierarchical modelling with successive downselection stages to accelerate the identification of polymer dielectrics that have the potential to surpass ‘standard’ materials for a given application. Successful synthesis and testing of some of the most promising identified polymers and the measured attractive dielectric properties (which are in quantitative agreement with predictions) strongly supports the proposed approach to material selection.

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of a search for pair production of supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model third-generation quarks are reported using 20.1 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
Abstract: The results of a search for pair production of supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model third-generation quarks are reported. This search uses 20.1 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The lightest bottom and top squarks (b1 and t1 respectively) are searched for in a final state with large missing transverse momentum and two jets identified as originating from b-quarks. No excess of events above the expected level of Standard Model background is found. The results are used to set upper limits on the visible cross section for processes beyond the Standard Model. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on the masses of the third-generation squarks are derived in phenomenological supersymmetric R-parity-conserving models in which either the bottom or the top squark is the lightest squark. The b1 is assumed to decay via b1->b chi0 and the t via t1->b chipm, with undetectable products of the subsequent decay of the chipm due to the small mass splitting between the chipm and the chi0.
