TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed an ultra-light, high-resolution Inner Tracking System (ITS) based on monolithic CMOS pixel detectors for detection of heavy-flavour hadrons, and of thermal photons and low-mass di- electrons emitted by the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider).
Abstract: ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is studying the physics of strongly interacting matter, and in particular the properties of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), using proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The ALICE Collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of the experimental apparatus, planned for installation in the second long LHC shutdown in the years 2018–2019. A key element of the ALICE upgrade is the construction of a new, ultra-light, high- resolution Inner Tracking System (ITS) based on monolithic CMOS pixel detectors. The primary focus of the ITS upgrade is on improving the performance for detection of heavy-flavour hadrons, and of thermal photons and low-mass di- electrons emitted by the QGP. With respect to the current detector, the new Inner Tracking System will significantly enhance the determination of the distance of closest approach to the primary vertex, the tracking efficiency at low transverse momenta, and the read-out rate capabilities. This will be obtained by seven concentric detector layers based on a 50 μm thick CMOS pixel sensor with a pixel pitch of about 30×30 μm2. This document, submitted to the LHCC (LHC experiments Committee) in September 2013, presents the design goals, a summary of the R&D activities, with focus on the technical implementation of the main detector components, and the projected detector and physics performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, time dependent solutions of supergravities with dilaton and arbitrary rank antisymmetric tensor field are found, which are related to Euclidean or spacelike branes.
Abstract: In this paper time dependent solutions of supergravities with dilaton and arbitrary rank antisymmetric tensor field are found. Although the solutions are nonsupersymmetric the equations of motions can be integrated in a simple form. Such supergravity solutions are related to Euclidean or spacelike branes (S-branes).

TL;DR: In this paper, performance measures satisfying a set of proposed axioms were developed and applied to cash flows generated by writing options on the SPX and the FTSE, showing that acceptability levels are U-shaped in the strike direction.
Abstract: This paper characterizes performance measures satisfying a set of proposed axioms. We develop four new measures consistent with the axioms and show that they improve on the economic properties of the Sharpe Ratio and the Gain-Loss Ratio. In our treatment, the performance measures, or the indexes of acceptability, are linked to positive expectations resulting from a stressed sampling of the cash-flow distribution. Theoretically, it is shown that the level of acceptability varies directly with the amount of stress tolerated. In an empirical application, the performance measures are applied to cash flows generated by writing options on the SPX and the FTSE. This exercise reveals that acceptability levels are U-shaped in the strike direction. The Author 2008. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of The Society for Financial Studies. TL;DR: Investigation of environmental and other conditions and identity of organisms that show dependence on Ni or Co revealed that host-associated organisms (particularly obligate intracellular parasites and endosymbionts) have a tendency for loss of Ni/Co utilization.
Abstract: Nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) are trace elements required for a variety of biological processes. Ni is directly coordinated by proteins, whereas Co is mainly used as a component of vitamin B12. Although a number of Ni and Co-dependent enzymes have been characterized, systematic evolutionary analyses of utilization of these metals are limited. We carried out comparative genomic analyses to examine occurrence and evolutionary dynamics of the use of Ni and Co at the level of (i) transport systems, and (ii) metalloproteomes. Our data show that both metals are widely used in bacteria and archaea. Cbi/NikMNQO is the most common prokaryotic Ni/Co transporter, while Ni-dependent urease and Ni-Fe hydrogenase, and B12-dependent methionine synthase (MetH), ribonucleotide reductase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase are the most widespread metalloproteins for Ni and Co, respectively. Occurrence of other metalloenzymes showed a mosaic distribution and a new B12-dependent protein family was predicted. Deltaproteobacteria and Methanosarcina generally have larger Ni- and Co-dependent proteomes. On the other hand, utilization of these two metals is limited in eukaryotes, and very few of these organisms utilize both of them. The Ni-utilizing eukaryotes are mostly fungi (except saccharomycotina) and plants, whereas most B12-utilizing organisms are animals. The NiCoT transporter family is the most widespread eukaryotic Ni transporter, and eukaryotic urease and MetH are the most common Ni- and B12-dependent enzymes, respectively. Finally, investigation of environmental and other conditions and identity of organisms that show dependence on Ni or Co revealed that host-associated organisms (particularly obligate intracellular parasites and endosymbionts) have a tendency for loss of Ni/Co utilization. Our data provide information on the evolutionary dynamics of Ni and Co utilization and highlight widespread use of these metals in the three domains of life, yet only a limited number of user proteins.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electropolymerization of different azines from aqueous solutions was investigated, and the structure of monomers was systematically varied changing both the nature of the second heteroatom and the substituents in the aromatic rings.
Abstract: The electropolymerization of different azines from aqueous solutions was investigated. The structure of monomers was systematically varied changing both the nature of the second heteroatom and the substituents in the aromatic rings. Considering the electropolymerization process and the properties of the resulting polymers one can denote polyazines as a new group of electroactive polymers. The electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical investigation of polyazines was done. A hypothesis on azine polymer structure is presented.
