TL;DR: Control strategies for localized control of zonal hybrid microgrid, enabled by the SST and centralized energy storage devices (ESD) integrated using dual active bridge (DAB) converter are proposed.
Abstract: Solid state transformer (SST) integrated hybrid dc–ac microgrid (HMG) has wide operating capabilities in presence of dc–ac loads, renewable energy resources, and energy storage. This paper proposes control strategies for localized control of zonal hybrid microgrid, enabled by the SST and centralized energy storage devices (ESD) integrated using dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The control of DAB dc–dc converter is modified for zero circulating power flow (ZCPF) operation in both SST and ESD. Power management and coordination control used in this paper ensures the power supply reliability of the zonal HMG integrated through the SST. Microgrid system, along with its proposed controllers, provides a stabilized low-voltage dc and ac network ports, in both grid feeding and forming modes. The performance of the configured HMG system is evaluated under various power management scenarios using the MATLAB software platform. Further, the SST architecture, with its proposed controller, is tested on FPGA-based hardware platform.

TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of defective single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are studied using the MD simulation software Material Studio and the simulation results show that the presence of one and four vacancy defects reduces on an average the tensile strength of CNT by 22.61% and 24.42% respectively and tensile failure strain by 34.17% and 16.74%, respectively for different diameters.

16 Mar 2012TL;DR: In this paper, a grid connected solar photovoltaic array power conversion using modular multilevel converter (MMC) is proposed, where perturb and observe method of maximum power point algorithm is used to regulate the DC link voltage of the MMC and to synchronize the grid utility voltage with the current for attaining near unity power factor operation under varying environmental conditions.
Abstract: This paper makes an attempt to develop grid connected solar photovoltaic array power conversion using modular multilevel converter. The proposed system makes use of single stage power conversion with maximum power point tracking and modular multilevel converter (MMC) as interfacing unit into the grid. Here perturb & observe method of maximum power point algorithm is used to regulate the DC link voltage of the MMC and to synchronize the grid utility voltage with the current for attaining near unity power factor operation under varying environmental conditions. The simulation results presented in this paper verifies the operation of proposed MMC topology such that the AC output is free from the higher order harmonics and grid voltage and current are in phase. The simulation studies are carried out under power system computer aided design PSCAD/EMTDC 4.2 environment.

TL;DR: The impact of DR control loop with communication delay in two-area thermal power systems for improvement in frequency deviation profile is presented and the optimal power sharing between supplementary and DR loop control is presented for different load variations.
Abstract: Summary
In future power system operation, wide area monitoring applications will rely heavily on demand response (DR) because of its inherent characteristics mainly in ancillary services (AS). The DR is widely applied in power system; however, impact of DR loop with communication delay on dynamic performance of two-area power system, mainly load frequency control (LFC), have not been reported by researchers. This paper presents the impact of DR control loop with communication delay in two-area thermal power systems for improvement in frequency deviation profile. The optimal power sharing between supplementary and DR loop control is presented for different load variations. Further, efficacy of controller performance is also validated by introducing non-linearities in generation in terms of generation rate constraint (GRC) and governor dead band (GDB). The simulations are performed with inclusion of DR for LFC control problem in (i) single-area, (ii) two-area thermal and (iii) thermal power system integrated with pumped hydropower system to improve the dynamic performance of system and hence minimize the frequency deviation. The controller in supplementary loop and DR loop is optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
